Duffy does the double again as Leona’s charity single soars to No.2

It’s a good week for British females. Soul singer Duffy makes it five weeks at No.1 with the infectious 60s influenced track Mercy while X Factor 2006 winner Leona Lewis shoots up to No.2 with her new double a-side single Better In Time/Footprints In The Sand.

Duffy’s Mercy has been No.1 since its release and becomes the second successive chart topper to spend five weeks at No.1 following Basshunter’s Now You’re Gone earlier in the year. The soul singer is set to release the slower Warwick Avenue next from her album, which is sure to give her another huge hit later on in the year. Leona Lewis’ last two singles A Moment Like This and Bleeding Love were both No.1 singles which sold over 800,000 copies each. Understandably, the third single can not quite live up to those high standards as both songs from this double a-side are from the 1.5 million selling debut album Spirit. Better In Time reached No.23 last week on downloads alone and is this week coupled with Footprints In The Sand to form a double a-side physical single with proceeds going to the Sport Relief charity. However, chart rules stipulate that only the downloads of one single from a double a-side single can count to ensure a level playing field in what is now more of a ‘songs’ chart than a ‘singles’ chart meaning that Footprints In The Sand is a separate entity in the chart this week, new at No.25.

It’s a clean sweep for homegrown talent in the top three this week with bassline act H ‘Two’ O feat Platnum moving down just a place to No.3 with What’s It Gonna Be which spends its 5th week inside the top ten. Though its download sales are rapidly dropping, like many successful dance hits, its physical sales remain high. US rock act OneRepublic had looked set to climb to No.2 if the midweeks were anything to go by but ultimately they were beaten by the strong physical sales of H ‘Two’ O meaning that Stop & Stare is a non-mover at No.4 this week on its fourth week in the top ten. Meanwhile, Canadian rock act Nickelback finally leave the top three with Rockstar which slides to No.5 this week having spent nineteen weeks in the top 40 so far. The song has been incredibly powerful for the band, turning a flop album into a huge success and persuading the band to tour here later in the year.

Danish pop act Alphabeat soared to No.7 with Fascination last week following its physical release but this week it goes one better to No.6 as its downloads have continued to increase this week. Their debut self titled album is due out in May and their next single is scheduled to be Boyfriend which has already been a hit in their native Denmark. US rapper Flo Rida’s Low, a collaboration with T-Pain is up to No.7 this week and is due out physically a week on Monday. It could well be a future No.1 single and emulate its US success, where it spent ten weeks at the top.

Taio Cruz and Luciana’s Come On Girl slides three places to No.8 this week while British rave act Utah Saints join the many acts who have hit the UK top ten with the same song more than once. Something Good originally peaked at No.4 in 1992 and the 2008 remix climbs to No.9 this week on downloads alone and could well match or even beat its original peak next week. More dance rounds off the top ten as Swedish DJ Basshunter’s former No.1 single Now You’re Gone slides four places to No.10 after ten weeks inside the top ten. It is the biggest selling single of the year in the UK so far, shifting over 300,000 copies to date. Dance music appears to be gaining more commercial success so far in 2008 than in the last few years with three songs in the top ten this week, four if you consider Taio Cruz to be dance. And with big potential hits due from September, Fragma and Scooter, the genre seems to be coming back into fashion in the UK. The top ten this week therefore includes one Swedish act, one Danish act, a Canadian act, two American acts and five British acts.

Just outside the top ten is Rihanna who finally leaves with Don’t Stop The Music. She is just ahead of Timbaland, Keri Hilson & Nicole Scherzinger’s Scream. While the first three singles from Shock Value have been huge selling singles in the UK with the first two going to No.1 and the other being a long running No.3 single, Scream, the fourth single, looks to have peaked at No.12 where it has climbed to this week following its physical release. American rock act Panic At The Disco have built a rather large cult following in the past three years since the release of their debut album A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. The quartet achieved three UK top 40 singles in 2006, the highest charting being But It’s Better If You Do (No.23) though I Write Sins Not Tragedies (No.25) has gained a higher classic status. The first single from their new album Pretty. Odd. is a change in direction and is a more accessible piano pop song in the McFly or even Beatles mould. It debuts at No.13 on downloads alone and should shoot into the top ten next week when released physically. American singer Chris Brown’s With You continues to progress up the chart on downloads alone, this week up two places to No.14.

Sugababes and Girls Aloud were at the top of a chart together a year ago with their cover of Run DMC and Aerosmith’s Walk This Way, but they are currently charting simultaneously and next to each other with their new singles. Denial shoots up nineteen places this week for Sugababes and is their 19th top 20 single. Their previous single Change peaked at No.13 in December so this one should at least do better than that when released physically next week. Girls Aloud have been more consistent than Sugababes with their singles success and Can’t Speak French is their 18th top 20 single, the last 17 all went top ten. It is up four places from No.20 last week and is also released physically tomorrow. One would imagine that both acts will be in the top ten this time next week, but it is hard to predict the impact that physical releases can have on acts now. Girls Aloud are likely to have higher physical sales next week while Sugababes may well clock up more downloads.

British indie act Elbow debut at No.19 with their new single Grounds For Divorce this week. It is their third No.19 hit and they have never had a higher charting single, the others coming in 2002 and 2003 respectively. Fellow indie band Futureheads shoot up ten places to No.20 after the physical release of The Beginning Of The Twist. Their biggest hit remains their No.8 peaking 2005 cover of Kate Bush’s Hounds Of Love. The release of OneRepublic’s album boosts their first single Apologize, their huge selling collaboration with Timbaland, and it moves back up a place to No.24 this week. As mentioned earlier, Leona Lewis’ new single was split and therefore, the less popular download seller, Footprints In The Sand has an entry of its own at No.25 this week, up from No.63 last week.

Foals are a new British indie band that have been hotly tipped for success in 2008 and following the physical release of their second single, Cassius becomes their biggest hit moving up from No.44 last week to No.26 and beating the peak of debut single Balloons by thirteen places. In an incredibly prolific week for homegrown indie, Mystery Jets are up next with Young Love, their collaboration with young female singer Laura Marling. Following its physical release, it shoots up fourteen places to No.34. Their biggest UK hit is the 2006 single The Boy Who Ran Away which reached No.23.

The only other new entry in the top 40 this week is courtesy of Hard-Fi with I Shall Overcome, the third single from their second album Once Upon A Time In The West. The first single from the chart topping album, Suburban Knights reached No.7 but the last single Can’t Get Along (Without You) could only manage No.45. This single is arguably higher thanks to the ConcertLive promotion that has helped Jimmy Eat World, Paramore and Wet Wet Wet to chart success over the past few weeks. Finally, Leona Lewis is back up a place to No.40 with the mammoth seller Bleeding Love which was of course 2007’s biggest selling single in the UK and is shaping up to be one of 2008’s biggest selling hits across the wider world.

A look at some international charts now. At the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 this week, it’s a second week in control for R & B sensation Usher with his new single Love In This Club, surely destined for big things in the UK in the coming months. Chris Brown moves back up to No.2 with the ballad With You while Flo Rida’s former chart topper Low slides a place to No.3. Californian female singer Sara Bareilles is back up a place with the piano track Love Song while Rihanna’s down a place at No.5 with Don’t Stop The Music. Future hits look set for Mariah Carey who has moved from No.24 to No.16 this week while Leona Lewis’ Bleeding Love jumps from No.41 to No.21 and is currently soaring on downloads so may well be in the top ten in the US next time the chart is revealed.

After storming to No.1 in the album chart last week, Duffy stays at No.1 for a second week with Rockferry this week. Just behind at No.2 is American act OneRepublic who make an impressive debut at No.2 with their debut album Dreaming Out Loud. Nickelback’s All The Right Reasons doesn’t move from No.3 this week while Leona Lewis shoots back up to No.4 with the Christmas 2007 No.1 album Spirit, buoyed by the success of her new double a-side single. Amy Winehouse slides to No.5 with the Deluxe Edition of Back To Black while Goldfrapp fall just a place to No.6 with Seventh Tree. Michael Jackson’s Thriller 25 continues to do well, staying at No.7 this week while the next new entry is at No.8 for soul band The Temptations with Classic Soul Hits. Amy MacDonald’s debut album This Is The Life has done well this year and is back up a place to No.9 this week while Mark Ronson’s Version slides to No.10 from No.6 last week.

In Australia, Rihanna is at the top with Don’t Stop The Music closely followed by Flo Rida’s Low and Leona’s Bleeding Love, highlighting similar tastes around the world as all of these tracks are also in the US and UK charts currently. The Last Goodnight are at No.4 with Pictures Of You while Soulja Boy’s Crank That is at No.5. The German charts are ruled by a novelty song as Kuschel Song by Schnuffel spends a 4th week at the top followed by Leona’s Bleeding Love at No.2 and Stefanie Heinzmann’s My Man Is A Mean Man at No.3. Dance song Bettina by Fettes Brot is up a place to No.4 while Timbaland’s Apologize is down a place to No.5 after an incredible 16 weeks inside the top five.

Finally, it’s over to Sweden, whose chart is almost completely dominated by songs from Melodifestivalen, the yearly competition that selects the Swedish Eurovision entry. The winner of the contest, Hero by Charlotte Perrelli debuts at No.1 in Sweden. Charlotte had a top 20 hit in the UK in 1999 with Take Me To Your Heaven under her maiden name Charlotte Nilsson. That song won the 1999 Eurovision Song Contest. Needless to say, this catchy uptempo pop song may well give her a second UK hit after the contest in May. Melodifestivalen runner up Sanna Nielsen’s Empty Room debuts at No.2 while fellow entrant E-Type and The Poodles debut at No.3 with Line Of Fire. 6 other songs from the contest are in the Swedish top 20 this week.

Back to the UK chart then, Duffy may well score a 6th week at the top of the UK chart next week with Mercy, extending the list of long running No.1 singles in the past few years. Leona should stay high with download sales of Better In Time finally reaching high levels and there are new physical singles released on Monday from Panic At The Disco, Utah Saints, Girls Aloud and Sugababes, all of which could be inside the top ten this time next week. Other notable releases next week are from Addictive feat T2, Boy Kill Boy, The Enemy, Gabriella Climi and Guillemots while there should be download entries from Estelle feat Kanye West, Madonna and Natasha Bedingfield feat Sean Kingston. On the albums front, Muse release a live album on Monday while the 69th edition of the long running Now series will undoubtedly top the compilation chart.
