Posted March 16, 200817 yr School-leavers should be encouraged to swear an oath of allegiance to Queen and country, says a report commissioned by Gordon Brown on British citizenship. Report author, ex-attorney general Lord Goldsmith, says it would give teenagers a sense of belonging. Council tax and student fee rebates are suggested for people who volunteer - as well as a "Britishness" public holiday. The PM's spokesman said he welcomed the "interesting" review, adding that it had sparked "quite a lively debate". However, John Dunford from the Association of School and College leaders said the citizenship ceremony was "a half-baked idea". Graduation ceremonies A Scottish Government spokesman said it did not support the plan and did not believe it would find favour with parents or school pupils. Welsh Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said: "I don't think that's appropriate myself." And Labour peer Baroness Kennedy said: "I think this is a serious mistake - I think it's puerile and I think it's rather silly. March 16, 200817 yr No I don't think they should but incoming immigrants should take an oath of allegiance to Britain as part of their right to stay here
March 16, 200817 yr Good grief, they'd better exempt Northern Ireland and large parts of West Central Scotland..... :o It's a barking mad idea. A 'Britishness' public holiday? WTF? So all the Republicans and SNP supporters go into work that day then?
March 18, 200817 yr Well considering Celtic fans sing "f*** the Queen" i cant see this going down well in catholic areas of Northern Ireland or Scotland lol
March 18, 200817 yr Fukk that!! I'm descended from Irish Catholic/Scottish blood, the very notion of any kind of "pledge of Allegiance" to the bloody Queen would've prompted me and a good many of my classmates to go a bit "William Wallace" if they'd even attempted this sh!t in the 80s..... I've been totally opposed to the Sectarian, Anglican-centric Royal Family (and the Anglican-centric establishement in general...) for as long as I can remember.. ANY person born of Catholic blood is seen as a "lower" citizen thanks to the ancient "Act Of Settlement" (whether they're lapsed or not..), big parts of which which are STILL enforced to this day, even though it dates back to Henry VIII and the bloody Reformation (all this sh!t just because the stupid Ginger c/unt couldn't get a divorce from the Pope  ). Pledge allegiance to the Royals or the the Union Jack, both of which represent the worst kinds of oppression and subjugation ??? FUKK OFF!!!! <_< <_< How DARE any so-called "democratic" Govt brainwash children with this bullsh!t, schools are there to educate, not to indoctrinate..... Are we living in fukkin' China??? North Korea??? The US???
March 18, 200817 yr It is essential though that immigrants who come here prove they have respect for this country and its traditions and customs and are going to have full respect for English law so some kind of oath of allegiance is needed for immigrants, it will help them feel more British too and integrated with British life, as a republican I don't think it should be an oath to the queen but some revised oath of allegiance

Why should anyone, immigrant or not, be expected to pledge allegiance to a Govt or a Royal Family if that institution is corrupt and rotten....? There are a great many LAWS in this country (such as the one I just mentioned, the "Act of Settlement") which are totally amoral, and treat a great many people like second class citizens.. I dont believe that the Anglican-Centric establishement in this country is worth pledging any kind of allegiance to.. You come to me with a State which is totally secular and completely divorces Church from State, or holds ALL faiths to be equal (which at present it most certainly does NOT, if William or Harry wanted to marry a Catholic - lapsed or not - they would have to give up any claim to the throne, the ideology behind this is totally archaic, sectarian and amoral IMO in this day and age. Christ only knows what would happen if either of them wanted to get hitched to a Muslim, Pagan or a Jew!!!!) then I might consider pledging allegiance to that State, but until the priveleged position of the Anglican church is done away with, then, sorry, but FUKK THAT!!!!
March 18, 200817 yr im with craig on this..... if people want to make this country their home then they should be expected to pledge allegiance. this would then be seen by 'us' as an attempt by them to want to integrate and not live as 'us' and 'them'.
March 18, 200817 yr if people want to make this country their home then they should be expected to pledge allegiance. An allegiance to what though mate...? The Queen? Gordon Brown? Maybe an allegiance to the Citizens, the people of this country (ALL the people, not just the Anglican-centric establishment or the fukkin' Royal vermin..), I might support that... An allegiance to the LAND itself.... But certainly NOT an allegiance to a Govt, a system of Govt or a Monarch.... No chance....
March 18, 200817 yr Ach, you had to recite that kind of bollocks in the cub scouts and it still didn't stop us singing "God shave the queen" instead.
