Stone Roses' debut album, Happy Mondays 'Pills Thrills and Bellyaches' and 'Bummed', plus a whole heap of singles by a variety of bands that are still, to this day, considered among the finest ever made - like it or not, 'Madchester' changed the way music is today. For the better, too.

 

i think my problem is that i was never into the madchester scene, i still think its appeal was largely generational. its a movement that is to some degree overlooked by people outside 'the in generation', me being one. after the heady days of punk and post punk this 'new' sound didnt appeal to me.

 

the other thing is that im really a singles fan, having bought many albums in the distant past and being VERY disappointed in the content, i stuck to singles and chart music. ive always regarded chart music as the 'window' to display what was going on in music.... ok, this is flawed but im not that bothered.

 

so when watertwat made radio hard to listen to, pop in the late 80's was for me for a younger generation. that was probably wrong, but my m8 was into the stone roses, charlatans, mondays etc... but they simply didnt appeal to me.

 

so i guess my judgement on this period in time perhaps isnt up to scratch as personal bias taints any opinion.
