to be totally fair, madonna's single has been out to radio for ONLY 3 weeks now and is rapidly gaining each week. mariah and leona have both had a pretty long time on radio in comparison, so it's not really down to "mariah is just inevitably performing better than madonna." it could be a big radio hit for madonna, or at least compared to her last many singles, it's just that sales got to a high point first. it'll probably peak around the time of the album, and if sales are strong, she's got a good shot at number one. if mariah's sales keep dropping off like this, i don't think they'll ever beat out madonna's, so once airplay gets close it'll be a legitimately close race

Firstly, I never said Mariah was inevitably outperforming Madonna.

I merely stated to Big Mistake (who claimed that US radio never get behind British acts over their own) that Madonna is American yet Leona has better airplay than her. Fact. Oh and Mariah has hardly been out a long time in comparison, the track has been out 7 weeks and after 3 weeks (if you're comparing her to Madonna) Touch My Body was Top20 or just outside of it, it got major airplay early on, digital downloads only helped her beat Rihanna's download record and secure her 18th US #1, 2nd only to The Beatles.

Oh and for the record after 3 weeks of airplay (well 23 days for Madonna, it's all I could find) for both Touch My Body and 4 Minutes they stood like this:

Touch My Body - 82.09 million audience impressions with 12160 spins.

4 Minutes - 41.995 million audience impressions with 6725 spins.

So yes, in that respect - Mariah is outperforming Madonna on US radio, having double her airplay after 3 weeks of Touch My Body and 4 Minutes premiering, but that's hardly surprising. Madonna outperforms Mariah in best part of Europe. Just the way it works. ^_^

the only reason why she's getting more airplay is because she's american...

radios in the US will not help a british female!!!!

Since when? I'm sure they played Amy Winehouse and Natasha Bedingfield to get them top 10 hits. And radio has been great to Leona; she's building and building everyday on airplay. She consistently gets the highest spin increase and has done for a while on Pop. :)

DAAAANG, Radiohead is at 14 in digital sales!!!!!, such a shame radio plays such a big part in us charts, otherwise this would be their biggest chart hit ever (they've only have 2 tracks in the hot 100, "Creep" and "high and Dry" / creep peaked at 34)

Well, good points there but you cannot really compare the airplays of TMB & 4M after 3 weeks (or, of course, you can but it makes no sense really) because the main difference is that the songs don't fit to the same categories when it comes to airplay. Madonna's airplay is almost solely from top 40 and rhythmic top 4 (with some adult top 40) while Mariah has huge airplay from rnb and adult rnd and therefore the sngs are basically incomparapable. No matter how huge 4M will eventually become it will never be able to reach the airplay huighs of TMB.

I understand that, comparing Mariah and Madonna is never going to be fruitful for anyone to be honest.

Deep_Honey said that it wasn't fair comparing them because Touch My Body had been out a lot longer than 4 Minutes. So I just used those airplay figures to show how they compared on airplay at 3 weeks from the respective tracks premiering. :P

Yeah, and it really isn't just Madonna and Mariah comparisons but pretty much all comparisons especially if both songs don't fit into excact same airplay category and aren't released the same time with same kinda promo. TMB has been actually climbing surprisingly slowly after its initial strong start from ultrawide multiformat saturation and has pretty much stalled now thou that might change quickly with all the AI and album promo. I guess artists like Madonna & Usher (& their labels) care more about not loosing that much money to illegal downloads and release their songs right after the radio debut while Mariah & her label like more a sure-fire no 1 hit with a long wait and big built-up demand. Thou I do think TMB is surprisingly weak first single from her album and without the built-up demand would have missed no 1 spot on hot 100. (btw, getting tired so sorry about the typos).

Yeah I think they did that just to build up anticipation for both the single and album. The 2nd single Bye Bye hits iTunes on the 14th of April, and it doesn't go for adds until the 22nd of April. So I think that was just for the first single. As for the single itself, I agree it wasn't the strongest of leads and the majority of fans will agree with you, now having heard the whole album it baffles me as to why they chose it. Still it's Mariah's 18th #1 and 24th Top10 hit so i'm pleased either way. ^_^ I can guarantee that all the future singles from this album will be much better, considering that I feel Touch My Body is one of the albums worst tracks...

Anyone know whether Spirit is number 1 yet??

Wrong thread. :P

But yes it is, it's got a big lead on the #2 album and looks on course to sell 190-200k. ;)

I think it was obvious that she and her label were not going to pick a strong track for a lead single, just like last time for her (thou this time they did choose a very "safe" track so it wouldn't bomb as badly as her last lead single did in the USA). It seems to be quite common for big stars nowadays to release some mediocre track as a lead single and it actually really makes sense totally. I mean they are big stars so they will have success with that kinda lead single because of all the anticipation and it will be enough to send the album no 1. The main thing thou to achieve big sales nowadays is to have durability (gone are the days when N'Sunc, Eminem, Britney etc had the 1m+ or even 2m+ sales weeks) and to achieve that they need several strong follow-up singles. So it is no use to waste a strong track as a lead single but to save those to keep the momentum and album sales going on for as long as possible. And tbh, I doubt Mariah will get any more no 1s from this album after TMB without some kinda trick (re-releasing the album with bonus track and creating built-up demand for that wouldn't be surprising). The reason for that simply being that after album has been released and all the tracks available on I-Tunes it is quite hard to get airplay and sales peak at the same time.

And for the two points I made (releasing weak lead single and how hard is to get no 1 after the release of the album) I use Timbaland as an example: Timbaland did release a quite mediocre (thou star-packed) lead single from his album - the two follow-ups have been quite universally thought to be way superior but Timbaland didn't want to waste those tracks as a lead single and now his album has been getting strong sales for quite some time. And secondly he wasn't able to top hot 100 with TWIA and Apologize even thou both were huge hits both sales- and airplaywise. The simple fact is that it is quite difficult to top hot 100 now if the album has been out already for a while and selling well. And therefore I doubt MC will get further no 1s from her album without that re-release trick which I do see happening.

You make a lot of good points. It's Like That didn't do that badly, it was #16 and stayed on the chart for 5 months. I hear what you're saying about the weak lead singles but I think Mariah really needed a strong track with Mimi after the disasters of Glitter and Charmbracelet and ILT thankfully filled that void. Plus Shake It Off was the third single and that would have been #1 had it not been for We Belong Together making it stall at #2 for 6 weeks! Then of course as you say Don't Forget About Us was Christmas #1 off the re-release. Very good post though. ^_^
"We Belong Together" only made "Shake it Off" for 1 week. "Gold Digger" held it off for the remaining 5 weeks.
