Here we go!!!!! the albums, w/k ending 15th Apr 1989 01 02 NOW 14 - VARIOUS 02 01 LIKE A PRAYER - MADONNA 03 NE WHEN THE WORLD KNOWS YOUR NAME - DEACON BLUE 04 05 A NEW FLAME - SIMPLY RED 05 03 ANYTHING FOR YOU - GLORIA ESTEFAN 06 04 DON`T BE CRUEL - BOBBY BROWN 07 08 APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION - GUNS N` ROSES 08 21 RAW AND THE COOKED - FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS 09 NE HEADLESS CHILDREN - WE ARE SEXUAL PERVERTS (W.A.S.P.) 10 06 ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - S` EXPRESS 11 11 SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF - THE STYLE COUNCIL 12 07 MYSTERY GIRL - ROY ORBISON 13 10 SOUTHSIDE - TEXAS 14 09 UNFORGETTABLE 2 - VARIOUS 15 20 CHEEK TO CHEEK - VARIOUS 16 15 ANCIENT HEART - TANITA TIKARUM 17 35 TECHNIQUE - NEW ORDER 18 14 BAD - MICHAEL JACKSON 19 16 STOP - SAM BROWN 20 24 KICK - INXS In 1989, Trevs and the gang started the Next Week Chart show, on Student radio, so a very rememberble time for me, dodging around radio and tv, in those youthful days!!!! Now 14 outselling Madonna then. BOBBY BROWN had his first solo album success (originally he was a member of black vocal group, NEW EDITION, having a number one in 1983 with CANDY GIRL. Of course later, he married WHITNEY HOUSTON. GUNS N` ROSES also had their first album top 10 hit. FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS went up and down the chart, all year, as indeed did Bobby (whom I mentioned). UNFORGETTABLE 2 was a follow up to UNFORGETTABLE (featuring 50s hits). CHEEK TO CHEEK was a love songs album. Here are 1989`s singles w/k ending 15th April 89 01 01 LIKE A PRAYER - MADONNA 02 05 ETERNAL FLAME - BANGLES 03 03 STRAIGHT UP - PAULA ABDUL 04 06 I BEG YOUR PARDON - KON KAN 05 02 THIS TIME I KNOW IT`S FOR REAL - DONNA SUMMER 06 NE IF YOU DON`T KNOW ME BY NOW - SIMPLY RED 07 04 TOO MANY BROKEN HEARTS - JASON DONOVAN 08 17 AMERICANOS - HOLLY JOHNSON 09 07 KEEP ON MOVIN` - SOUL II SOUL 10 29 BABY I DON`T CARE - TRANSVISION VAMP 11 35 MYSTIFY - INXS 12 09 I HAVEN`T STOP DANCING YET - PAT SHARP/MICK BROWN 13 08 PARADISE CITY - GUNS N` ROSES 14 NE WHEN LOVE COMES TO TOWN - U2 AND BB KING 15 11 DON`T BE CRUEL - BOBBY BROWN 16 25 CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET - BROTHER BEYOND 17 18 THE BEATEN GENERATION - THE THE 18 10 PEOPLE HOLD ON - COLDCUT/LISA STANSFIELD 19 15 FIREWOMAN - THE CULT 20 24 SHE`S A MYSTERY TO ME - ROY ORBISON 21 12 I`D RATHER JACK - REYNOLDS GIRLS 22 NE GOOD THING - FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS 23 27 MUSICAL FREEDOM MOVING ON UP - PAUL SIMPSON/ADEVA 24 14 CAN`T STAY AWAY FROM YOU - GLORIA ESTEFAN 25 13 INTERNATIONAL RESCUE - FUZZBOX 26 19 SLEEPTALK - ALYSON WILLIAMS 27 28 OF COURSE I`M LYING - YELLO 28 20 ONE MAN - CHANELLE 29 39 WHAT DOES IT TAKE - THEN JERICHO 30 42 DEVOTION - TEN CITY 31 40 GOT TO KEEP ON - COOKIE CREW 32 16 HELP - BANANARAMA/FRENCH AND SAUNDERS 33 43 BEAUTY IS ONLY SKIN DEEP - ASWAD 34 34 ONLY THE LONELY - T`PAU 35 38 BEDS ARE BURNING - MIDNIGHT OIL 36 22 STOP - SAM BROWN 37 41 REQUIEM - LONDON BOYS 38 NE ONLY THE MOMENT - MARC ALMOND 39 21 FAMILY MAN - ROACHFORD 40 37 ROUND AND ROUND - NEW ORDER In 89 the singles had SIMPLY RED heading for the MRIB number one. The joke going around concerned JASON DONOVAN. Remember the joke??? "Where does Jason get his Kebabs, from?"....................................The answer was "From Jason`s DONER VAN!!!!!!!!!!" HOLLY JOHNSON went solo away from FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD, we eagerly awaited the album, "BLAST". WENDY JAMES was the big pin-up in TRANSVISION VAMP, looking a little like DEBBIE HARRY. BROTHER BEYOND were nearly finished. DONNA SUMMER made her big come back with STOCK AITKEN AND WATERMAN, and this was the second of a 2 week, all female top 3. KON KAN sampled ROSE GARDEN by LYNN ANDERSON (a 1971 hit, also for NEW WORLD, and a minor one for SANDIE SHAW). FUZZBOX were originally called WE`VE GOT A FUZZBOX AND WE`RE GONNA USE IT. LISA STANSFIELD (real name LISA FIELDS) had her first hit (with COLDCUT, previously COLDCUT sang on the YAZZ hit "THE ONLY WAY IS UP". It was a re-make for ASWAD of a TEMPTATIONS 1966 hit. Both MIDNIGHT OIL, and the LONDON BOYS were slowly on their way to the top ten. I am slightly miffed and disappointed that poor BARRY MANILOW had just scraped into the top 50, with "PLEASE DON`T BE SCARED". Why, am I disappointed, you ask? Well, in 1989, our very own Trevs, recorded a single of Barry`s "CAN`T SMILE WITHOUT YOU". Now, whatever you do if you ever hear it (very unlikely)!!! Close your ears!!!!! Let`s get back to 2008, and before the full new chart, here are the top 10 physical singles 01 mariah carey 02 sam sparro 03 estelle 04 black kids 05 elliot minor 06 fragma 07 florida 08 chris brown 09 kooks 10 duffy Poor Mariah ay!! But it show`s us why Flo rida was let down physically, and Mariah herself was let down by the downloads. Madonna at 3, will it be that way on the official chart on Sunday? ESTELLE sells almost 10,000 more than FLO RIDA. MADONNA and SAM SPARRO are neck and neck. As there is a slight equation of airplay taken into consideration, that maybe why. Possibly Sam, could be at 3, on Sunday. But I have said it before, and will say it again, on physical release, Madonna will most certainly, be number one. So, outside the top 45, lurks SOULJA BOY (YAHHH!) at 48 (physically alone, it is in the top 20), JORDIN SPARKS is 53, ELVIS AIN`T DEAD (SFG) is up to 54!!! QUEEN (DON`T STOP ME NOW) is 55, SWEET FEMALE ATTITUDE are 59. GUNS N` ROSES back from 89, are number 60. ADELE (COLD SHOULDER) is 70. HOOSIERS, NEWTON FAULKNER and BLOOD RED SHOES are in the top 70 (BLOOD RED SHOES is physical and at 67. Losers this week are FORWARD RUSSIA and COUNT AND SINDEN (who miss the top 75, due to downloads). Trevs will be back next week, after a good rest near the sea. I will attempt Next Week Chart, on Monday from 5pm. When SEPTEMBER, BRITNEY and LAST SHADOW PUPPETS may be top ten, I would say. Also watch out for SCOOTER, and the FEELING may chart on downloads alone, in the top 20. If you want any other info, about today`s chart, you are welcome ask! :D Edited April 14, 200817 yr by davetaylor
April 11, 200817 yr 1989 was a great, but was #6 by Simply Red Like A Prayer is a CLASSIC, especially for its controversial video
April 11, 200817 yr Author Count and Sinden was released last week though wasn`t it the 31st? Bleeper was actually properly released on the 7th, but some lurked into HMV last week. Where it made number 69 last Sunday. This week, along with Forward Russia, it would be in the physical top 40.
April 12, 200817 yr thanks for this! Best song from that chart in 1989 was Musical Freedom by Paul Simpson and Adeva. The popular club mix of the song (and lead track on the 12" remix version) was called "Musical Freedom (You Got the Love Mix)" which shows its origins in the Candi Staton song which finally charted in its own right a couple of years later. I remember on the Chart Show Simply Red's IYDKMBN being #1 for what I recall as being 4 weeks, with The Bangles always stuck behind it at #2. Perhaps I'm imagining it and it wasn't #1 for that long. Was the Chart Show using the MRIB chart at this time? Being that this is the chart of 15/04/89 I assume it was on that day that Simply Red reached #1 on The Chart Show. 15/04/89 is also (sadly) infamous for Hillsborough and it really is one of those "I can recall what I was doing when..." events. Getting back to the present, how are sales in the top 10? I have visions of them being close from #3 down to perhaps #7 or #8. Edited April 12, 200817 yr by Robbie
April 12, 200817 yr Simply Red might only have been #1 on MRIB for 3 weeks - for the Bangles' 4th week at #1 (officially), Kylie entered at #2 with Hand On Your Heart (despite being the biggest seller that week), so it seems likely that HOYH was an MRIB #1.

Hi there Paul, Simply Red only had 1 week, a-top of the MRIB chart w/k of the 22nd Apr. The Bangles hit the top on 29th Apr for 2 weeks. Kylie went to the top on 13th May for 2 weeks, knocked off by Ferry Cross The Mersey on 27th May for 3wks Sealed with a Kiss (jason donovan) went to the top on 17th Jun 89, but in the London only produced MRIB chart, Cliff Richard hit the top, with The Best Of Me, for 2 wks, and also in London "Batdance", and Prince had a week at the top.

Bangles went to the top for 2 wks. The Chart Show chart always broke off on a Tuesday (equivalent to the chart used in Sounds music paper). So, really the Chart Show top ten, was a midweek chart (which would be the same, as the one on Chart Show TV, in 2008, Saturdays at 1pm). In those days MRIB produced 2 charts (Sounds, and Network Chart). We stick to the Network Chart (more ahead, compiled on Friday pm, including a percentage of airplay). This week`s chart is more close on the 2 - 4 places. With Flo Rida, Sam Sparro and Madonna around 25,000 plus. You are more right that the 5 - 9 spot are pretty close. There ain`t much between 10, and 11 either. Obviously, Saturday`s sales will increase all that substantually. Edited April 12, 200817 yr by davetaylor
April 13, 200817 yr Author I didn't realise the MRIB chart was still going. Who still publishes it? A version without the downloads only does appear on msn music, but it rarely gets updated/put up. This version comes from a contact. MRIB do a lot of research these days, for msn, Vodaphone, Nokia, and Yahoo. I think that Independant radio, should join forces, with them again and do a better chart, than the rather nonsensical Hit40uk.

Yep, The Chart Show definitely never had The Bangles at #1 - they were #2 behind Madonna, then Simply Red then Kylie. In those days it was very rare for something to debut at #1 on The Chart Show chart - especially if it did so without it being matched by the Gallup chart the following day. The Chart Show chart did seem like a midweek chart, but I think it also picked up sales from the previous Friday and Saturday, thus causing new releases to chart lower in their first week. Throughout 1987-1988 they always had the number of hours and minutes listed since the chart was published (usually about 2-3 hours), thus earning its tag as "The Fastest Chart On Television"!!!
