I've learned my lesson and never give opinions on albums on first listen because i embarrassed myself with FWN. On first listen I was very underwhelmed and posted so on another forum, then had to retract my view a week later. If I think an album is worth spending my time on I get a copy for the car and have it on continuous play whilst driving. If it hasn't improved after a week I generally give up. FWN took about 4 days to really sink in and I now genuinely think it's a better album than the debut. I've had TAOTU (the first 9 songs that leaked) in my car for a few days and absolutely LOVE this album (my pre-order from Domino has now replaced it). Some real stand outs and the only one I genuinely don't love is I Don't Like You Anymore, to me the voice effects on that are reminiscent of FWN and don't gel with the rest of this album IMO. My fave track has already changed from My Mistakes to Standing Next To Me...what a tune that is and I think it will make a great 2nd single.

For once I actually agree with an NME review! I think they got it spot on!

i have to agree with you.one of the best reviews around (probably the best) not for the verdict (8/10) but for the way they try to describe the music.readin all these reviews (see page 1) -with a few exceptions- its hard for someone to understand the album.in NME ,they give a brave n very informative review n yeah...congrats this time...

I love this album...

For the third time already in 2008, there is an indie release at number one on the artist albums chart. In January, the Beggars Group’s XL Recordings label topped the chart with Radiohead’s In Rainbows. The following month, the same company was back on top, thanks to Adele’s debut album 19.

Now it is the turn of Domino Recordings to lead the survey, courtesy of The Last Shadow Puppets’ debut album, The Age Of Understatement, which sold 51,186 copies last week to remove The Kooks’ Konk from the summit. The album’s success comes a week after the same act’s debut single, also called The Age Of Understatement, reached number nine.

It is the fourth Domino Recordings album to reach number one since the label’s inception in 1993, following Franz Ferdinand’s 2005 album You Could Have It So Much Better, Arctic Monkeys’ 2006 debut Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not and their 2007 follow-up, Favourite Worst Nightmare. The Last Shadow Puppets are a duo made up of Arctic Monkeys’ vocalist Alex Turner and Miles Kane of The Rascals. Its first-week sales are significantly less than those of Whatever People Say I Am… (363,812) and Favourite Worst Nightmare (227,922) but are probably greater than The Rascals’ first album, Rascalize will sell in its week of release next month.

The Kooks’ Konk suffers a 56% dip in sales to 28,818 copies, and falls to number 2 as a result. Meanwhile, Leona Lewis continues to benefit from the press coverage of her US success, which generates a further 28,084 sales for Spirit, which moves 2-3. Now fully released physically, with seven-inch and CD available, Without You fails to match the Top 40 success of The Feeling’s six previous singles. It is the second single from their second album Join With Us, following I Thought It Was Over, which reached number nine in February. Without You is some way from that position, debuting at number 53 on sales of 2,799. This is despite excellent radio support for the single, which is in the Top 10 of the airplay chart.

However, those plays are translating into increased demand for the album, which has climbed 71-58-39-30 over the last three weeks. As fourth single Who’s That Girl climbs 66-38 on sales of 3,888 downloads, Swedish star Robyn’s selftitled album also returns to the Top 40. Home to For Every Heartbeat (number one), Handle Me (17) and Be Mine (10) as well as Who’s That Girl, the album reached number 19 when Every Heartbeat was out, number 69 when Handle Me scored and number 11 as Be Mine peaked.

For some reason, it has trouble maintaining its chart status once the singles have faded but it has climbed 155-78-39 in the last fortnight, and has now sold 176,230 copies. As Glasgow band The Fratellis gear up for the release of their second album Here We Stand next month, their 2006 debut Costello Music has passed the 1m sales mark. The album, which peaked at number two, has become the 134th album to sell a seven-figure quantity in the 21st century. Next to join the list will be Madonna’s 1990 compilation The Immaculate Collection, which should reach the target next week. The Immaculate Collection has sold more than 3.6m copies in total.

In my all time last.fm top 50 already :D and the highest plays from one band in a week since the last Arctics album was released (179) :P My favourite track that I can't stop playing keeps playing which is a good sign, at first it was My Mistakes Were Made For You then it was Black Plant and now it's Meeting Place

Standing Next To Me is the one I keep playing at the moment. Only took a couple of listens to get hooked on this one. It's just a great pop song IMO. And written by Miles. Alex must think writing for LSP is easy peasy compared to AM as he's got a songwriter (almost) as good as him to share the workload.

Agreed. Standing Next To Me has cooked up so many plays compared to the rest of the album for me. It's just such a good, catchy pop tune. Reminds me a bit of Fluorescent Adolescent to be honest in a vague sort of way.

The album's at #3 in the midweeks this week (behibd Madonna and Portishead) and looks on course to sell about 30k this week! ^_^

^.great news.

the competition is too strong.

Doesn't he;p that Tesco (biggesy supermarket in the UK) are doing a deal where you can get Madonna's new album and a previous one for £9! :P

i d love to see Portishead to top the charts...

Doesn't look likely. I think Madonna's out-selling Portishead's album 2:1!

Sold 16.2k this week as of the Thursday update! Should hopefully make it to about 30k by the weekend!
If it did sell 30k that would be only a 40% approx fall from the first week, which is very encouraging.

From Drowned in Sound-

The organisers of Reading and Leeds are lining-up The Last Shadow Puppets for a surprise appearance on this year’s bill, well-placed sources tell us.

Alex Turner and Miles Kane – and, perhaps, producer and live drummer James Ford and string arranger Owen Pallett – will apparently sit in between The Cribs and Conor Oberst on the NME/Radio 1 Stage.

If so, that would mean The Last Shadow Puppets appearing in Reading on Sunday (24 Aug) and Leeds on the Friday (22 Aug).

The duo have bad form when it comes to surprise festival appearances, however, failing to transpire at this year’s Camden Crawl after not getting the chance to soundcheck at the Dublin Castle.
