[REC]

now you probably missed this when it came out at the cinema as it wasnt around for lond and was in spanish - but here was one of the better low-budget zombie horror movies thats been out this year - and as a film i think one that was better than Cloverfield (UGC content and shakycam masking trad usual script) and Diary Of The Dead which was v. dissapointing and dreadful seeing that it was by George A. Romero (slumping into dumbass teenhorror - thinks its clever but almost scooby doo territory).

[REC] on the other hand was good, much better and hopefully too much wont be lost in the 'Quarantine' remake - even tho it was a shaort film it could have done with being slightly shorter as it film lost momentum once it got into the dark/nightvision at the end - and one the pace was lost (should have ended on the whats in there shock rather than go on further)

I actually saw it tonight just a few hours ago. I actually did like it quite a bit thou it wasn't brilliant. It started well, then slowed a little too much for a bit (the interviews part) and then it became very good after that for the rest of the film. The only other problem I actually really had (and it was a minor one) besides the slow part in the middle was that the camera did shake a bit too much sometimes. So actually I didn't think the movie lost any momentum at the end and the ending was just fine IMO. Another great Spanish film just a while after The Orphanage.

I am gutted i work in a cinema and i missed this film! Was only out for a week! :( I did a quick screen check on it though the other day and i was bobbing myself!

i think the interviews were needed for the concept (that it was a tv show) and that point it was still building up - rather than after the frights - and it was good that in these early parts you didnt realy know what was the 'terror' that they were facing - just thought the nightvision part went on a bit too much

I was frankly astounded by [Rec] to be honest... In a way that I thought I would never be... I went into it feeling a bit blase about it, and found it to be really tense, and genuinely quite horrifying in places... Loved the "Exorcist"-style twist in the tale as well.... Hollywood will totally ruin it.... <_<

have you been watching the spanish horrors on bbc four on tuesday nights?

  • 1 year later...
Just watching this for the first time (Although I have seen 'Quarantine') and I am literally sat here, crapping myself! LOL :( Especially near the end. The last Zombie is just amazing! So f***ed up and tons better than 'Quarantine'!

i saw this in the cinema when it came out and knew nothing about it cos the trailer was so short and didn't give much away so i was really surprised at how good it was. i also watched quarantine when that came out and it pales in comparison. quarantine even gives the ending away in the trailer! ridiculous..

here's a video a just found of peoples reactions to it in the cinema (the spanish one).. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eFrM50cmhw

Well, I predicted that Hollywood would ruin this film, and I was right.....

Indeed, putting the final shot into the trailer was just so far beyond stupid that it's honestly hard to fathom....

I didn't even go to the cinema to see "Quarantine", I downloaded it...... TBH, I reckon that's the thing to do, dont pay good money for old rope, download it instead.... It would send the right message to these Hollywood b'astards.... ie.. STOP WITH THE FUKKIN' REMAKES AND DO SOMETHING MORE ORIGINAL....... :P

Downloading the remake of Friday the 13th as I write this......

that reminded me of a something that he director of the orphanage said when it was announced that there was gonna be an american remake of it. he said "The Americans have all the money in the world but can't do anything, while we can do whatever we want but don't have the money". so true..

It is, it's very true in fact.... I mean, I find it absolutely hilarious that Hollywood is getting its panties in a knot about people downloading films.... I mean, it IS a fact that when you dont have a big budget to do a film, you have more creative freedom.. I mean, look at "Moon", a micro-budget sci-fi film in comparison to Terminator Salvation or Transformers, and Moon just absolutely pishes on these "big budget" films because it has more creativity and more ideas going on in its head....

So, would it actually necessarily be a bad thing if there were significantly less "big-budget blockbusters" being made....? Personally, I dont think so, because I can personally do with more films as intelligent as "Moon" or "Rec".... If downloading can indeed jeapordise the future production of yet more bog-standard, creatively empty affairs such as "Terminator Salvation" or "Transformers", then, er, well, I say, to hell with it - download away...... :P

It's not as if you cant have good blockbusters - look at "Dark Knight"..... But, let's face it, films like Dark Knight are as rare as rocking horse sh!t.....

I'd say that's a better critique of Hollywood than American cinema. The USA has one of the best indie film markets/scenes in the world, along with countries like France, etc. The theatre I saw Moon in was nearly packed, and I live in the middle of nowhere, and it was playing in a theater along with movies like Funny People / The Hangover, etc. Of course, Moon isn't the best example of a current indie film, as it did get quite a bit of hype. Still, a lot of people in America appreciate quality cinema and seek it out. Hollywood is not a good representation.

[REC] to me is one of the best horrors in a while, up there with films like Orphanage. I really do think that others countries make better horrors, in fact better films than America. Then they Americanise then and f*** them up. Stop remaking films classic old films, stop looking to the rest of the world for ideas, stop putting out sequels that are not needed/wanted just to make money. Use some creativity for once.

I completely disagree with that, you can say the same thing about Reservoir Dogs, Brick or Memento, look at the hype that those got, I saw Resi three times, every time cinema packed... You trying to tell me Resi Dogs isn't the best example of an Indie Film just going supernova simply because it's a fukkin' good film..... Reservoir Dogs changed the face of American cinema throughout the 90s, but still remained a resolutely "indie" film in its own right, it was the perfect antidote to bloated, moronic, big budget cack like "The Bodyguard"..... Similarly Moon is also an antidote, IMO, to rubbish like Terminator Salvation.... Just because it actually gets bums on seats, doesn't mean it aint an alternative to the sh!te.....

I think you missed my point entirely. I'm not trying to claim it isn't indie; I just said it wasn't the best example of what I was going for because Moon has gotten quite popular for an indie release, and I was trying to show that the USA has a really nice market for smaller budget indie films. I wasn't trying to define indie as a genre of movie. Which it isn't, in the first place.

Of course Moon would be playing in theaters because it's done well and gotten hype, thus it was a bit of a weak example to what I was trying to say. Even smaller budget indie films are shown here. I just recently saw In the Loop, Humpday, Food Inc., and Paper Heart at my local indie cinema, all of which had decently sized audiences. Many of which were American, some weren't.

Basically, I was trying to say you can generalize Hollywood by saying 'America'. I'd actually say the amount of quality indie films coming out here as well as the interest we have in foreign films really puts America's film culture above a lot of other countries. Any sort of review site online, Rottentomatoes or Metacritic, all dedicated to collecting movie reviews and talking about quality cinema, are all American. A lot of foreign indie films, funnily enough, are released in America before they're even released in their own country. Slumdog Millionaire comes to mind.

Ive always been interested in watching Rec but never really followed up that interest, i have actually thought about buying it since i have heard so much about it but i think i shall download it first.
