^ It's not that. I think we just hold different parameters as to what quantifies as 'arguing' and 'debating'.
Get over the accent thing, becuase it's just another bloody-minded method of proving, as if it were needed, that your musical snobbery is beyond obscene.

It wasn't the accent - it was the dull arrangements I found startlingly bad. And twee is a pretty spot-on description of it, too.

And musical snobbery? I like to think my musical collection, which stretches to almost 13,000 discs and God knows how many vinyls and MP3s IS varied. Much unlike your personal top 20s, Jark, which always seem to plough the same tired old r'n'b/pop/female singer path. No variation there whatsoever.

I have music in my collection from Mozart to Morrissey, Bach to Bananarama, Pink Martini to Pink Floyd, Dave Brubeck to David Bowie, Divine to the Divine Comedy.... pretty much every genre catered for, really.

if you think she's mere 'karaoke' then I don't want to burst your bubble because I'd rather you stay secluded.

I was referring to Joss Stone and her breathtakingly awful music which sounds like a young girl singing karaoke along to her favourite pop stars. In a dazzling array of accents, too.

Supernature is easily better than Seventh Tree.

My opinion. I didn't even like A&E. *shrugs*

As for your & Jake's opinion that it is a much worse album than Supernature. Well personally I think it shows both of your narrow tastes in music especially compared to Russ & Scott (Grimly). I bet you have never heard the likes of Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, John Martyn, Cocteau Twins, Joanna Newsom, Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden & Laughing Stock or Joni Mitchell's Hissing Of Summer Lawns albums. Let alone bought any of those artists/albums.

When Portishead were on BBC Radio 2's Radcliffe & Maconie's last week, guess which track Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow & Adrian Otley selected to be played: Yes they selected Goldfrapp's Clowns.

But hey I bet you'd love Madonna's mediocre at best new album ahead of Portishead's wonderful Third album, which many critics are touting as album of year so far?

If you accuse me of being a music snob then I'd point out I own over 1200 albums & point you in the direction of my weekly Personal Charts to see that I like a wide range of musical styles/genre's hence the tuneful pop of Sara Bareilles is my current Personal Chart #1 song.

Huh? Excuse me? What are you on about?! You view my chart on a weekly basis so therefore you should no my taste isn't narrow. Or do you not even read what is on my chart? Just because I do not like 'Seventh Tree' does not therefore make me musically narrow-minded.

I have heard of most of those acts too? Joanna Newsom is one of my favourite artists and 'Ys' one of my all time favourite albums?! Anyone who says 'spelunking' in a song is genius and she is frankly more than that in my book, a nigh on Goddess  'Monkey and Bear' is one of my all time favourite songs.

As for Portishead, I bought their album this week. I downloaded the Madonna album and it was atrocious. Currently my worst album of the year.

What do you think I am exactly?! One thing you are Richard is ignorant I'll tell you that.

I wonder if I'll get a response to this.

How narrow-minded and semi-hilarious is this? Out of anyone I know Jake probably has one of the most diverse tastes in music. You're judging him (and me as well as I prefer Supernature to Seventh Tree) by one musical preference. I'll have you know Ys by Joanna Newsom is one of Jake's personal favorite albums of this centruy, and an album which I also own. And how does the fact that you own these album somehow make you better than me/Jake/whoever, for that matter? How ridiculous.

There is so much arrogance in this thread that it's truly is unbelievable. Who are you all to decide who has a narrow-minded taste in music and who doesn't? And entirely based off two Goldfrapp albums? I prefer Supernature to Seventh Tree as I felt Supernature was a much more cohesive and well constructed album which really was a shining example of what pop music could sound like if executed well. It had this fierceness to it which really made it for me. Seventh Tree felt like an album from a band trying a bit too hard to be taken extremely seriously. It just falls flat by the last track and while it is not poor, it is far from great. Honestly, I found it boring.

And don't try to tell me my musical tastes are narrow because they are surely not.

Edit: Yeah, Jake hadn't responded yet when I wrote this. =( But his love for Joanna Newsom bares repeating.

 I may as well join in on the debate and say I have yet to like one Goldfrapp album, thats including 'Felt Mountain'. They are either incredibly dull (Seventh Tree), or lacking in substance (Supernature). Does this make mean I have a narrow-music taste? Do I actually lack what you would call a decent music taste?

On the subject of Jake - people really need to know their audience. Lets crawl out of each others arses now please.

I like that - good line :) .

And Joanna Newsom is fabulous, I agree.

Wow; when I was compiling my chart it seems I forgot that Janet Jackson, Ashlee Simpson, The Saturdays, Roisin Murphy, Gabriella Cilmi and Sugababes all fall into the same category/genre. Silly me.

Now I'm no longer going to defend my taste because I know that I love it all, and I don't need an sad old git like you to delude yourself with illusions of superiority.

Well Sooorrrrryyyyyy!

I do apologise for obviously having c**p, ignorant taste in music that I have the audacity to like the new Goldfrapp album over their last album.

After all their Supernature album must be their best because it is their biggest seller and got "Old Frapp" Madonna & "Botox Frapp" Kylie in to rip them off plus it is the one album liked by fans of Top40 music?

Clearly my music tastes are so narrow, as evidenced by my Top100 Albums & Top101 Singles of All-Time (click on the threads in my signature).

The fact that my two favourite albums of all-time are David Bowie's Hunky Dory & Kate Bush's Hounds Of Love whose organic, rustic, atmospheric, emotional, very traditional English sound with classical string arrangements which clearly influenced the new Goldfrapp album is proof of that.

David Bowie - Quicksand

Kate Bush - Hello Earth

I obviously need to listen to "talented" artists like Joss Stone, Cascada, Ashlee Simpson, Fall Out Boy, etc instead of c**p like David Bowie, Kate Bush, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pixies, etc.

Still shame on me for having the audacity to like Joanna Newson whom I saw at the Royal Albert Hall last year.

Obviously all those Kylie/Madonna fans who bought Supernature & talked all over the likes of Utopia & Lovely Head from Felt Mountain when they performed live on their last tour were in the right then, as they are younger so therefore clearly have superior taste in popular music than fuddy duddies like me, Russ & Scott who should be banned from posting outside of the Retro forum as obviously we know nothing about good music because we are obviously too old, therefore our opinions on music are clearly invalid.

Excuse me, I never said 'CYNICAL', I said 'CLINICAL'. Read what the hell people say before you go calling their posts idiotic. Somewhat ironic isn't it?

As for Mute, yes their roster is filled with non-commercial acts. Several of whom I love dearly (M83 for example of late). BUT the difference between M83 and Goldfrapp is that Mute pour huge amounts of money into the latter and next to nothing in the former.

What about Depeche Mode...? Nick Cave..? Dave Gahan's last solo album...? I'm pretty damn sure their stuff doesn't come cheap, DM are a flagship act for Mute... Fair enough, DM have done loads for Mute in the past, but the past few albums have done merely "alright"... For the likes of Sony or Warners, that would be a 'dropping' offence.... Mute support DM and Cave because they see their musical worth (not to mention the worth of their formidable back catatlogues...)

Absolutely brilliant post COD.... The arrogance of youth has its place sure, but in the face of such overwhelming evidence, it should perhaps learn to curb its enthusiasm somewhat....

Jark, Russ is right, your Top 20 is lacking in a bit of variation mate... It's generally speaking the same sort of thread running all the way through it....

Huh? Excuse me? What are you on about?! You view my chart on a weekly basis so therefore you should no my taste isn't narrow. Or do you not even read what is on my chart? Just because I do not like 'Seventh Tree' does not therefore make me musically narrow-minded.

Joanna Newsome is okay... But personally, I'd've been more impressed had you guys said someone like Emilie Autumn or The Dresden Dolls to make the point of your diverse tastes in music....

Still, anyone who has Ladytron in their sig can't be all bad.... ;) Quality band, and frankly, I prefer what they do to what Goldfrapp does in many ways.... They take electro-soundclash to a totally different level (esp on the first two albums which are probably my faves.....).. If you like Ladytron, you should really check out some of the artists on the SPV/Out of Line record label - mostly European acts (German, Belgian, etc...), stuff like Suicide Commando, Rotersand, And One, Hocico (who are just fukkin' awesome and MEXICAN...), Unterart, Laibach, Client (British act...)....

Fierceness?? What fierceness did "Supernature" have then...? To these ears it sounded like a totally castrated, chart-friendly version of their infinitely superior PREVIOUS album "Black Cherry" (which is why I dislike it so much, a firecracker going off after a nuclear explosion in effect)... You want "fierceness", listen to "Strict Machine" or "Train"..... "Seventh Tree" is from a totally different place entirely, which is why I judge it by different standards.... It is a good album, the only reason for its (falsely) perceived "failure" is that it leaked on the net months to it actually coming out... Pretty obvious one would've thought....

.

I was referring to Joss Stone and her breathtakingly awful music which sounds like a young girl singing karaoke along to her favourite pop stars. In a dazzling array of accents, too.

Totally agree.. Joss Stone is just beyond fukkin' awful.... Technically, she might have a "good voice"... But when your material is that bad, that derivitive, that dull and uninspired, well, what does a "good voice" actually count for...? It's like putting a dollop of whipped cream on a mouldy cherry pie... I'd rather someone be a technically bad singer (such as Diamanda Galas), and blow my mind with incredibly strong material.....

Joss Stone is basically Beth Gibbons' musically retarded, in-bred cousin.... All surface, nowt underneath it....

You have completely misread what I said. I said 'clinical'

It aint "clinical" either mate, again I refer you to Kurt Cobain. Was he "clinical" for taking Nirvana off in the direction he did after "Nevermind"?.... And your post certainly generally implies that Alison is being cynical also (which is probably why I misread the word) ....

Oh my god. The difference between you and Grimly is that however badly either of you can come across, he at least has justifications for what he says. You look a true fool coming out with statements like that, and everybody can see it. I pity you.

Jark, Russ is right, your Top 20 is lacking in a bit of variation mate... It's generally speaking the same sort of thread running all the way through it....

I assume you meant 'sound' or 'theme' and not 'thread'? :P Haha. Well whatever, it's my taste and I'm happy with it. I don't set out to like any music just because the singer is female or whatever.
