It is undeniably by far and away the most commercial choice - and kind of shoots down what Russt and Grimly have said about Alison, Will and the label not caring about the sales,

Sorry, not sure how you arrive at that rather ridiculous statement tbh.... As Russ says, just because it sounds commercial, doesn't mean Jack.. Look what happened with "Lithium" by Evanescence... Failed utterly, AND was easily one of the most accessible tracks on the "Open Door" album....

This is, what, the THIRD single.... It's a relegation.... Most people have the album by now anyway, so they aint gonna buy it.... I still maintain Mute are putting no pressure on the band.. Why dont you actually go and look at the sort of bands Mute/Novamute/Blast First have signed with them before you start making statements like this....

I stand by my statement, because the label have gone with by far and away the most commercial song after A&E on the record, and word is that originally they wanted Clowns...I may be wrong, but it seems they want to ensure the album stays high up the charts, though that shouldn't be difficult anyway given how low they've priced it of late.

And fantastic as Lithium was, being the most commercial song on The Open Door was barely a difficulty. It still wasn't overly radio-friendly.

So, explain why a rocker like "Call Me When Your Sober" does well, and a 'big ballad' like "Lithium" doesn't, and "Lithium" is very chart-friendly, just listen to ballads like "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" or "Alone", both MEGA hits back in the day, "Lithium" is definitely a more contemporary version of tracks like that right down to the grand piano signatures..... Does not compute mate.... It's not as if the album didn't sell either, 5+ million copies...

The facts are, you just dont know that this wasn't what the band planned anyway.... It's a pretty cr@p song anyway.... The one I usually end up skipping... It's as bad a single choice as Evanescence putting out the awful "Good Enough"..... And that one stiffed too, despite its "commercial viability"....

Well luckily most of the fans seem to think Caravan Girl is an excellent choice, so even if the public don't catch on it should be enough for at the least a minor hit in the vein of Happiness. ^_^

Let's just say Evanescence's project was absolutely terribly handled, especially in the UK. Quite the shame I thought at the time.

Shockingly handled I'd say... Almost as if Wind-Up just said "Oh sh!t, Amy's gone and actually been an artist.....What are we gonna do....?". A proper Hard Rock/Metal label like Roadrunner or Century Media would've known how to handle an album like "Open Door". I've got a friend who works in Roadrunner's London offices.. She's a fan of Amy's, she was utterly fuming at how Wind-Up promoted things..... "Absolute sh!t. Bloody clueless fukkers" was how she put it....

Not quite - I think Caravan Girl is one of the worst tracks on the album - you cannot say most fans like it when I know a fair few who skip it on the album :P

Caravan Girl is my least favourite moment on Seventh Tree, too... it's too whimsical, too flimsy.

Clowns would have been a disastrous single, as much as I love the track.

I still think Eat Yourself, given a full-on ballad treatment, would have been a great single. Road to Somewhere, too - great track. Not keen on Cologne Cerrone Houdini - but it'd make a decent single.

Totally, I'm a fan, and I skip it...... To me it just does NOT sit well with the rest of the album, the mood and atmosphere the rest of the album creates is just totally different to this track.. If they'd done a cover version of "Knees Up Mother Brown" or "The Birdie Song" I doubt it could be any more jarring or more out of place to the general mood and themes of the album than "Caravan Girl" is....

I take it for what it is - A throwaway track that Goldfrapp probably just did to throw the "Supernature" fans a bone..... "there there kiddies, something just to keep you happy".....

What a daft thing to say. It sounds NOTHING like ANYTHING on Supernature, and god forbid they'd want to please the people who helped make their best album such a success that Goldfrapp were allowed to go with a totally different, uncommercial direction this time around.

If this IS the case as you say then how ridiculous on their behalf. What a clinical and cold approach to music. It makes them somewhat staged no? Why would any staunch 'Supernature' fans bother in the first place with this album considering how musically at odds the two are.

The 'Supernature' albums seems to be held in some lowly regard for a reason I fail to fathom. It's like near snobbery. Electronic-come-glam Pop is just as relevant as Pastoral-Folk. Goldfrapp's diversity is what makes them special, to me, at least.

Jark - only a casual observer could even begin to really believe Supernature is, cough, the "best Goldfrapp album" - in fairness, you've admitted to not even hearing their debut Felt Mountain which is, without doubt, their finest album by miles.

And Supernature deserves all the snobbery aimed at it - it's a truly ghastly album apart from Ride a White Horse.

That's an opinion though isn't it? 'Supernature' is MILESSS ahead of 'Seventh Tree' on so many levels. I can go through them if you so wish? It's obviously not as good as 'Felt Mountain' but irrespective that's no reason to get snobby. Music snobbery is awful for obvious reasons but if it's the path you so wish to take then so be it.

Anyway on the topic at hand here, 'Caravan Girl'. Best choice for next single, it showcases another dimension to the album even if it breaks the cohesion of the album.

I must admit to being a casual Goldfrapp fan - I only very recently bought Felt Mountain and Black Cherry. But my love for Seventh Tree is more to do with the type of music it is which is very me personally.

Supernature is great (and was the only Goldfrapp album, I owned for ages), but I like it far less as it is less to my taste musically.

The release of Clowns would make Goldfrapp quite the laughing stock. A dreadful, nonsensical lullaby of a song. Foul!

Only clowns would play with those balloons

Clowns is the best track on the album. Lyrically it is a superb put down of people who are obsessed with their own image who have plastic surgery such as having breast implants. Which when they are dead & they are cremated won't disappear.

Conceptually it is a superb summation of this wonderful rustic neo-folk album. In particular sticking up two fingers at all those casual fans who bought the commercially successful yet creative dead-end that was Supernature.

As for your & Jake's opinion that it is a much worse album than Supernature. Well personally I think it shows both of your narrow tastes in music especially compared to Russ & Scott (Grimly). I bet you have never heard the likes of Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, John Martyn, Cocteau Twins, Joanna Newsom, Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden & Laughing Stock or Joni Mitchell's Hissing Of Summer Lawns albums. Let alone bought any of those artists/albums.

When Portishead were on BBC Radio 2's Radcliffe & Maconie's last week, guess which track Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow & Adrian Otley selected to be played: Yes they selected Goldfrapp's Clowns.

But hey I bet you'd love Madonna's mediocre at best new album ahead of Portishead's wonderful Third album, which many critics are touting as album of year so far?

If you accuse me of being a music snob then I'd point out I own over 1200 albums & point you in the direction of my weekly Personal Charts to see that I like a wide range of musical styles/genre's hence the tuneful pop of Sara Bareilles is my current Personal Chart #1 song.

I think you somewhat less of a musical snob, TiP, or at least I did prior to this post. No, I do not own any albums by Nick Drake, Sandy Denny or Talk Talk, but then do Russt and Grimly own any albums by Joss Stone, Trina or Utada Hikaru, to pick just three at random? Does the fact they the albums I do not own are of a less poppy nature than those which I do make my music taste inferior? I do not think so! And for the record, yes, I love Madonna's new album and I'm certainly proud to tell you that; it's perfect beat-tinged pop and I won't be condemned by the likes of a dreadfully snobbish bunch of music fans who believe their taste to be superior to that of any other, more pop-orientated poster.

For the record, dearest TiP, Russt and Grimly, I advise you check out Utada Hikaru, if you can step out of your comfort zones and endulge in the finest Japan has to offer.

Ciao.
