Commentary

 

New Year, new number 1 and loads of new entries! Mika nabs his second number 1 with album highlight Relax (Take It Easy)which climbs from last weeks 4. Gwen Stefani rises to 2 with Early Winter, the highest charting song from The Sweet Escape, beating Wind It Up which got to number 3. Radiohead have this weeks highest new entry with Jigsaw Falling Into Place, the first track to be taken from the ‘new’ album In Rainbows. Kate Nash drops to 4, just ahead of Adele who debuts at 5 with Chasing Pavements. Last weeks chart topper, Change, drops to 6, Kelly Rowland benefits hugely from The Freemasons (like Beyonce) and has a high new entry at 7 with Work. MIA enters at 8 with Paper Planes, the follow up to Jimmy – I’m not sure if this song is actually being released anytime soon, but everyone else seems to have charted it, so what the hell! Rounding off a busy top 10, Girls Aloud drop to 9 and the Stereophonics climb to 10 with My Friends.

Another new number 1 this week from Adele with the excellent Chasing Pavements. I know people don’t like comparing her to Amy Winehouse – but her voice and musical style is similar, so I will carry on comparing her for now! Kelly Rowland rises to 2 from 7 with more than a little help from the genius remixers the Freemasons – a contender for next week’s number 1 I think. Radiohead cling on at 3, but Britney is snapping at their heels with the perfect pop track Piece Of Me – Britneys comeback has been astounding so far! Rounding off the top 5 is last weeks chart topper from Mika, and just ahead of last weeks 2 from Gwen Stefani – my chart is quite fast moving so far this year. Rising to 7 are the Basshunters with the cheesefest that is When You’re Gone and excuse me while I compare them to Cascada! MIA sticks at 8, as I understand Paper Planes will now be released in March sometime. Finally in the top 10, Girls Aloud sick at 9 and 4 weeker number 1 Change from the Sugababes drops to 10.

Commentary

 

Third week of 2008 and my third number 1 :o Goldfrapp return in spectacular and beautifully mellow fashion with A&E and enter my chart at the top! Kelly Rowland sticks at 2 after narrowly missing out on the top spot this week and last weeks chart topper from Adele drops to 3. Britters sticks at 4 with Piece Of Me and Radiohead drop to 5, just ahead of Lupe Fiaso and Matthew Santos with the excellent Superstar. MIA rises to 7 despite still not being out for ages, Mika drops to 8, Robyn’s brilliant Be Mine climbs to 9 and rounding off the top 10, Basshunter drop from 7 to 10.

Commentary

 

Hurrah! A song holds on to the top spot for the first time in 2008 as Goldfrapp stay at number 1. Kelly Rowland stays at the runners up spot for her third week however, just ahead of Robyn who climbs from 9 to 3 with Be Mine! Adele slips to 4 but Mark Brown and Sarah Cracknell rise to 5, as do Kanye West and Chris Martin who rise to 6 with Homecoming, aheadof Radiohead who drop from a two week hold of 5 to 7. The Feeling climb to 8 with comeback track I Thought It Was Over (is it as good as Fill My Little World and Never Be Lonely? – not sure yet), and there is a duo of new entries in the top 10 from the lovely Kylie with Wow at 9 and rising star Duffy at 10 with the excellent Mercy.

 

Other new entries are from: David Jordan (15), Mark Ronson (22) and Amy Macdonald (24). Climbers include: The Wombats (32-11) and that’s it outside the top 10!

Commentary

 

100 charts! :o I never thought I would make it to 2, tbh, never mind 100. Well, to celebrate, I have the best song ever (well, for now) at number 1 – Hot Chip’s Ready For The Floor. It has entered at the top as well, which is a feat only equalled by Mason vs Princess Superstar, Reverend and the Makers and the Sugababes. Hot on Hot Chips heels is Kylie with the excellent (but not as good as In My Arms, sadly) Wow, which received its video debut this week. Goldfrapp drop to 3, closely followed by the brilliant Duffy – imo, one of the best new talents of the year. Sarah Brown and Mark Cracknell stick at 5, just ahead of Kelly Rowland who drops from her three week reign at 2 to 6. The Feeling rise one to 7, Robyn drops from 3 to 8, Adele drops to 9 and MIA climbs back into the top 10 as the release date for Paper Planes is finally looming.

Commentary

 

Well, after the excitement of 100 charts last week (and thanks for all the comments, btw :D) this weeks chart is in turn slow moving and chock full of new entries! Hot Chip naturally hold on at the top, and Kylie holds on as runner up as well. Goldfrapps amazing A&E climbs to 3, which is its peak to date, just ahead of Duffy who stalls at 4 (although I have a sneaky feeling she is just hiding there before pouncing in a week or two….!) and just ahead of the Feeling who rise to 5 with I Thought It Was Over – which is granted not as good as classics like Fill My Little World or Never Be Lonely, bust is still a damn fine pop song.

 

Continuing the theme of non movers, Kelly Rowland sticks at 6, Mark Brown falls to 7, MIA rises to 8 (again!), Robyn falls to 9 and Alphabeat are the sole newbie in the top 10 this week with 80s-tastic Fascination.

Commentary

 

Duffy is just superb – and her new single Mercy shows this by leaping to number 1 this week after spending two weeks at 4. Goldfrapps A&E also climb this week at 2, as do the Feeling who climb to 3. Kylie skips just two to 4 and Hot Chip, last weeks number 1 slide to 5 – there are a lot of amazing songs out at the moment and my top 5 was a very close call this week! The highest new entry this week comes from H ‘two’ O – a very chavvy dance song that I just cannot stop listening to :cry: Alphabeat rise to 7 and look set to continue to rise, MIA sticks at 8 again, and Kelly Rowland and Mark Brown drop to 9 and 10.

Commentary

 

Firstly, this is my 104th chart – which means that Jesters Top Tunes are 2 years old! :magic:

 

Clocking up her third week at the top, Duffy becomes my longest running #1 of the year so far – and looks set to extend her lead over the coming weeks. Hot on the heels of the album of the year (so far) Goldfrapp return to #2 with the beautiful classic A&E. Kylie quite rightly sticks at 3 this week as do MGMT at 4. Rounding off the top 5 is a yo-yoing track from MIA – Paper Planes has had its release date moved again to the end of March and is trying my patience a bit. It currently equals the peak of Jimmy and I may yet have to let it peak either this week or next week.

 

Another song that is just off its future peak is Alphabeat’s Fascination at 6 – this 80s flavoured gem should find itself in the top 5 in seven days time :D H20 drop to 7 this week, just ahead of two top 10 debuts in the shape of Stop and Stare from One Republic and Can’t Speak French from Girls Aloud (Mon dieu!). Both these songs should be on the up again next week and I can see Hot Chip, now at 10, dropping out of the top 10 :o Many changes on the way!

Commentary

 

 

Chart 105 sees Duffy staying at the top for her 4th week – the longest run at the top since the Sugababes stayed at the top with Change for a month in December. One Republic rise to 2 with the excellent Stop and Stare, which outperforms their previous hit with Timbaland, Apologize, by 1 place. Danish 80s-tastic Alphabeat finally peak at 3, and MIA peaks at 4 at last this week! Rounding off the top 5, The Ting Tings rise a massive 15 places from 20 to 5 with the excellent Great DJ.

 

In a fast moving week, Goldfrapp’s A&E drops from 2 to 6, and Taio Cruz and Luciana rise from 21-7 with the fab Come On Girl, which may well move on up next week. Girls Aloud climb a place to 8 with Can’t Speak French, Kylie slides from 3 to 9 (wow!) and MGMT slip to 10.

 

Just outside of the top 10 are 4 future hits from Leona Lewis, Gnarls Barkley, the Sugababes and Utah Saints – watch them rise in the coming weeks!

Commentary

 

Chart 106 again sees Duffy clocking up her 5th straight week at the top – equalling the #1 run of the Sugababes last year. Could Duffy become my longest runner at #1 since the Scissor Sisters non consecutive run of 7 weeks back in the summer of 2006? An interesting battle at numbers 2 and 3 as Girls Aloud nab 2 with Can’t Speak French and the Sugababes 3 with Denial – although don’t be shocked to see a reverse of fortunes next week. One replublic drop to 4, just ahead of Taio Cruz and Luciana which rises to this weeks 5.

 

At 6, Alphabeat drop 3 places ahead of some new top 10 action from Gnarls Barkley with the fab 60s vibe of Run, Leona on the rise at 8 with Better In Time and the highest of 5 new entries this week from Panic at the Disco’s Nine In The Afternoon (watch for this one next week!). The Ting tings round off an action packed top 10!

Commentary

 

Chart 107 has Duffy at number 1 for a 6th consecutive week which makes it the longest running number 1 on my chart since Scissor Sisters had a broken run of 7 weeks at the top in late summer 2006 – and the longest consecutive run since Coldplay’s Speed of Sound spent 6 weeks at the top in summer 2005. Gnarls barkley rise to 2 with Run – its chart position adversely affected by the fact that the physical release has been withdrawn which is a shame as it could have been a much bigger hit on mine and the official chart. Estelle and Kanye West have this weeks highest new entry at 3 – one to watch next week. American Biy is just a superb comeback for Estelle and this track has already beaten Kanyes previous highest entry on my chart of Stronger last year.

 

Girls Aloud and the Sugababes both drop 2 to 4 and 5 respectively this week, but Hercules and Love Affair climb into the top 10 with the wonderful Blind at 6. Panic at the Disco improve marginally on last weeks highest new entry at 7, Radiohead climb into the top 10 with Nude at 8 and 2 fallers – One Republic and Alphabeat make the bottom end of the top 10.

 

Other new entries this week are from: Sam Sparro (16), Madonna & JT (19), The Enemy (20), The Feeling (27) and The Guillemots (32). Climbers include: Utah Saints (12-11), Futureheads (20-13), Get Cape.Wear Cape.Fly (26-24) and Britney Spears (28-25).

Commentary

 

Chart 108 sees a new number 1 – after 6 weeks at the top, Duffy has moved aside for Sam Sparro who clims 15 places to number 1 with Black and Gold. Estelle and Kanye West have climbed from 3 to 2, just ahead of a climber from Radiohead – Nude was used in the Skins trailer to good effect earlier in the year, and equals the peak of Jigsaw Falling Into Place earlier this year. Portishead, one of my favourite bands ever (and where my boss lives :lol:) are back, and Machine Gun, the totally jaw dropping new single enters my chart at 4 – watch for this one next week! Last weeks chart topper, Duffy, slides 4 after 6 weeks on top to 5.

 

Gnarls Barkley, let down by a switch from physical to download only release slip from 2 to 6 this week, but The Last Shadow Puppets, a side-project formed by Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner and The Rascals' Miles Kane enters at 7. Hercules and Love Affair drop to 8, as do Girls Aloud to 9, but Alphabeat cling onto the top 10 at 10 with a non mover for Fascination.

 

The sole other new entry this week is from September at 12 with Cry For You, but other climbers include: The Guillemots (23-11), The Enemy (20-18), Kooks (26-24) and Adele (28-25).

Commentary

 

Chart 109 and another new number 1, this time from Bristol based trip hop trio Portishead. Machine Gun leaps from 4-1, giving them a 100% strike rate of #1s to releases (6 and counting…!). The Last Shadow Puppets rise from 7 to 2, mainly diue to heavy youtube play of the USSR inspired video – and of course the fact that it’s a top song. Sam Sparro slides from 1 to 3, ahead of the highest new entry of the week from the amazing stunning Happiness from Goldfrapp – please have a look at the video, its just superb. The Black Kids debut at 5 with I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend…, showing that fresh new indie talent is as strong as it was in the 90s.

 

Estelle and Kanye West drop from 2 to 6, just shy of Duffy who also loses her top 5 place this week. September make a welcome return to my top 10 at 8, Cry For You sounds a tad like Supermode’s Tell Me Why, but it is no worse for the comparison. Radiohead and Gnarls Barkley both drop to make up the bottom end of the top 10.

Commentary

 

Chart 110 has the beautiful Happiness by Goldfrapp climb to #1 – their second top tunes #1 after the equally beautiful A&E reached #1 earlier in the year (and is still in the top 20 this week at #17). The Last Shadow Puppets stick at 2, just ahead of Black Kids who climb to 3 with the Indie flavoured I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You. Portishead, last weeks 1, drop to 4 with Machine Gun, and Sam Sparro drops to 5.

 

September, who had a #4 from me in 2006 with Satellites, climb to 6 with the excellent Cry For You. It remains to be seen if it can beat the peak of its predecessor! Previous chart toppers Estelle and Duffy both drop a place to 7 and 8, ahead of a huge climber from Adele – Cold Shoulder leaps 13 places from 22 to 9 – the video has really made me warm to the track. Finally in the top 10, Aplhabeat return as Fascination clocks up its ninth week in my top 10, and its fourth week at 10!

Chart 111 has Goldfrapp earning their second week at the top with Happiness, but facing a stiff challenge from September who rises 6 places to 2 with the excellent Cry For You and beating the number 4 peak of Satellites in the process! The Last Shadow Puppets drop just one place to 3, ahead of Adele, who is on the rise with the under-rated, Mark Ronson produced Cold Shoulder. Sam Sparro sticks at 5, Portishead drop to 6, also dropping are The Black Kids at 7. Kylie rises to 8 with potential top tune chart topper In My Arms (watch for this one in the coming weeks), Duffy drops just 1 to 9 and Alphabeat stay at 10.

Chart 112 sees Goldfrapp stick at #1 for the third week, making them my second longest running #1 of the year so far! The whole top 4 remains unchanged with September sticking 2, and The Last Shadow Puppets and Adele at 3 and 4 for a second week. Kylie rises to 5 with In My Arms (this could well be next weeks #1) and Sam Sparro drops just a place to 6. Madonna and JT rise into the top 10 at 7, Portishead and The Black Kids drop to 8 and 9, and Robyn scores her 4th top 10 hit for me at 10 with Who’s That Girl.

Commentary

 

Chart 113 has a very unplanned chart topper from the return of Coldplay. Violet Hill was made available as a free download from Coldplay’s website last week, and is released as a download only track on i-tunes next week. All this means that my planned number 1 from Kylie’s In My Arms (the highlight from X, imo) now stalls at number 2 for now at least. September drops to 3 after two weeks at 2, Goldfrapp’s Happiness drops to 4, after three weeks on top and the wonderful L.E.S. Artistes from Santogold rises to 5 from 13. The Last Shadow Puppets drop to 6, Sam Sparro drops to 7 and completing a trio of fallers, Adele drops from 4 to 8. The second highest new entry this week is from Duffy’s Warwick Avenue, entering at 9 which is the same place as Mercy did 15 weeks ago! Finally in the top 10, Portishead drop to 10, as the release of their new album, Third, makes its way to the top of my album chart.

Commentary

 

Chart 114 – Coldplay stick at #1 for a second week with Violet Hill. The band also released an album track, Viva La Vida on i-tunes this week, but my chart rules won’t allow me to chart it – otherwise there would be a Coldplay top 2 (and new #1). Kylie remains the bridesmaid at 2 with X album highlight In My Arms, just pipping Santogold to the post – although she clims two places to 3 this week. Excellent dance track Cry For You drops just one place to 4, as does Goldfrapp’s Happiness which clings on in the top 5.

 

Rising (and possibly peaking) 14 weeks into her chart run, Gabriella Cilmi’s Sweet About Me rises to 6 from 15, after previously peaking at 11 a whole 10 weeks ago. The power of a deodorant advert! :P Will.i.am and Chrrly Cole finally crack the top 10 at 7, ahead of Duffy who rises to 8 from last weeks 9 with the sublime Warwick Avenue. Finally in the top 10, Sam Sparro drops to 9 and the Last Shadow Puppets drop to 10.
