Commentary

 

Chart 115 has Coldplay at the top for a predictable third week, and Kylie stays put at 2 for a third week too. Providing the first flurry of activity in the top 5 is the rise of Icelands Eurovision song, This Is My Life, by Eurobandið, which climbs from 12 to 3 – heres hoping they win next Saturday! Duffy rises to 4 with the excellent Warwick Avenue, and the Ting Tings climb a mahooosive 32 places from 37 with That’s Not My Name, which is also the official chart #1. September drop to 6, Goldfrapp drop to 7, and Will.i.am and Cheryl Cole end a trio of fallers at 8. Sam Sparro impressively hold on at 9, and The brilliant Two Doors Down from the Mystery Jest rises from 20 to 10.

Commentary

 

Chart 117 has a new number 1 from Duffy – Warwick Avenue is her second Top Tunes number 1 of 2008 and makes her the sole artist to do so this year so far. A shock number 2 sees Mint Royale’s remix of Singin’ In The Rain nab the highest new entry of the week. The reason for the sudden interest in this excellent remix is down to one George Sampson, who nabbed victory in Britain’s Got Talent whilst performing a brilliant dance routine to this tune. The Mystery Jets now rise to 3 (below the planned number 2) with two Doors Down, which is decidedly 80s flavoured. Euroband, Iceland's ESC tune, drop just 2 to 4 and lok set to have a long run on my chart. Rounding off the top 5, Coldplay drop from 4 weeks at the top to 5 – a fall repeated by Duffy and Hot Chip – in fact, the last few number 1s dropped from the top out of the top 3 (Portishead dropped 1-4 as did Goldfrapp and Estelle 1-6!). I think I need to be less fickle :lol:

 

After all the top 5 excitement (!), Portishead rise a place to 6 with The Rip, The Ting Tings drop to 7, Sara Bareilles rises from 19 to 8, Sam Sparro holds on at 9 for a fourth week and Taio Cruz enters at 10 with the rather excellent I Can Be.

 

Other new entries are from: Ne Yo (13), Radiohead (23) and MGMT (32). Climbers include: Alphabeat (30-11) and Kalomoria (32-27).

Commentary

 

Chart 117 is a mix of small movements and a lot of songs sticking to last weeks positions. In a static chart though, there is a new number 1 from Mint Royale and their 2005 reworking of Singin’ In The Rain – a track made famous by Britian’s Got Talents George Sampson. I wasn’t doing my chart properly in 2005, but I doubt this would have hit the top on its first outing – so it is a long overdue Top Tune! Duffy slips just a place to 2, ending the recent pattern where chart toppers slipped to 4 or 5. Portishead rise to 3 with the Rip, the standout track from Third, Euroband stick at 4, and Coldplay stick at 5 with Violet Hill

 

In these changing times for my chart, I am unsure when to chart new tracks – especially those not given a full release, but chart well in the official chart. I am undecided on whether to chart Coldplay’s Vida La Vida and Rihanna’s Disturbia – both excellent tracks not on the release schedule. Time will tell if I decide to chart them :P

 

Back to the top 10, Taio Cruz climbs to a new peak of 6, Sara Bareilles rises to 7, and to complete a trio of climbers, Alphabeat rise to 8. Sandwiched in between climbers, the Mystery Jests drop to 9, and Ne Yo rises to 10 with the brilliant Closer.

Commentary

 

Chart 119 sees another new #1 – the second for Portishead this year so far. The Rip, the highlight from Third, climbs to 1, just ahead of Ne Yo, who climbs a massive 8 places to 2 with the excellent Closer. A chart topper next week, or will something unexpected happen? Duffy slips just 1 to 3 with Warwick Avenue, and Coldplay rise to 4 with Violet Hill – this week is officially Coldplay week for me! Finally in the top 5, Sara Bareilles manages to rise 2 places with Love Song.

 

Taio Cruz (and Estelle?) stick at 6, last weeks #1, Mint Royale, drops to 7, Euroband drop to 8 with dance-tastic This Is My Life, Alphabeat slip just 1 to 9 and rounding off the top 10 are the Mystery Jets and Two Doors Down.

Commentary

 

Chart 120 – the week where the top 2 are from the same artist for the first time ever on my chart! Coldplay shoot to the top with Viva La Vida, imo their best ever song, and previous #1 Violet Hill springs back up the chart to 2. VLV is the second #1 this year for me with no set release date (Singin’ In The Rain being the other) and looks set to give me a more relaxed and less structured chart. Ne Yo has to settle for 3 this week due to the upsurge of Coldplay, but Sara Barellies manages a new peak of 4, ahead of Portishead who continue the trend of big fallers from the top spot at 5.

 

The rest of the top 10 is more stable, as Duffy slips to 6, both Mint Royale and Euroband are non movers at 7 and 8, Taio Cruz drops to 9, and Madonna climbs 10 places to 10 with album highlight Give It 2 Me.

Chart 121 has Viva La Vida from Coldplay at number 1 for a second week – this could be a long runner! Ne Yo rises back to 2 for the second time, Violet Hill slips to 3, and completes the rare feat of occupying every position from 1-5 within its chart run to date. Dizzee Rascal & Calvin Harris rise 20 places to 4 with the excellent Dance Wiv (yes, Wiv) Me and rounding off the top 5, Madge rises 5 places with Give It 2 (yes 2) Me.

 

Sara Bareilles drops to 6, Portishead to 7 and Duffy to 8. Adele has the highest new entry at 9 with 19 album highlight Hometown Glory, and The Ting Tings enter at 10 with Shut Up and Let Me Go.

Chart 122 – Coldplay rack up their third week at the top with classic Viva La Vida, just ahead of Dizzee Rascal and Calvin Harris who climb 2 to 3. Madonna manages to break into the top 3 with smashing tune Give It 2 Me, meaning Ne Yo drops from 2 to 4. The Ting Tings climb to 5 giving them their third JTT top 5 hit this year – can Shut Up And Let Me Go beat the number 4 peaks of Great DJ and That’s Not My Name?

 

Violet Hill drops to 6, MGMT rise yet again to 7 with the excellent Electric Feel, Adele rises a place to 8, Kylie nabs this weeks highest new entry at 9 with the Freemasons Mix of The One and oddly for me, Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown rise a place to 10 with the surprisingly decent No Air.

Commentary

 

Chart 123 – Coldplay claim the top spot for the 4th time with Viva La Vida equalling the stay at the top of Voilet Hill earlier in the year. How long can they hold on for? There are many challengers for their crown, not least Dizzee Rascal and Calvin Harris who stick at 2 for a second week, and the Ting Tings who rise to 3 with the marvellous Shut Up and Let Me Go. Another riser is the surprise grower from MGMT – Electric Feel just gets into my head for hours at a time and will not go away! Madge slips to 5 from 3, looks like Give It 2 me has peaked on my chart now.

 

More movement in the lower half of the top 10 as tomorrows hits continue to climb in the form of Adele who rises to 6 with Hometown Glory, and Kylie who rises to 7 with The Freemasons Mix of The One. Despite this single being cancelled (again) I will continue to chart it if the release date was 28 July. This brilliant track could well be the one to knock Coldplay from their perch in the coming weeks! Coldplay continue to have 2 tracks in my top 10 as Violet Hill drops to 9 and The Last Shadow Puppets rise to 10 with Standing Next To Me.

Commentary

 

Chart 124 – Coldplay claim the top spot for the 5th time with Viva La Vida becoming the second longest running number 1 of the year so far – can they beat Duffy who had 6 weeks at the top with Mercy? The Ting Tings climb to 2 with Shut Up And Let Me Go, giving them their biggest hit on my chart (and quite right too, as its their best song, imo) and Kylie leaps to 3 with the Freemasons Mix of The One – can it climb another place to equal the peaks of Wow! and In My Arms? Adele climbs two to 4 with the excellent Hometown Glory and MGMT drop just one place to 5. A nice Indie influenced top 5 this week!

 

The Verve climb to 6 in their second week on my chart – expect to see them in the top 5 next week. The Last Shadow Puppets also climb to 7, improving on last weeks top 10 placing and BWO climb into the top 10 with the camp-tastic Lay Your Love On Me. Dizzee takes a hefty drop falling from 2 to 9, and Coldplay still have two songs in my top 10 as Violet Hill spends its 12th consecutive week in the top tier.

Chart 124 – Coldplay claim the top spot for the 6th time with Viva La Vida becoming the joint longest #1 of the year so far with Duffy’s Mercy and also equalling the 6 week stay at the top of Speed Of Sound in 2005 which has been the longest chart topper by Coldplay so far! Can VLV hold on next week to break both records? Adele finally climbs to the top 3 this week reaching 2 with the lovely Hometown Glory – I think this is the highlight of Adele’s 19 album, but can it equal the #1 peak of the lesser Chasing Pavements? BWO climb to 3 with camp-tastic Lay Your Love On Me and really needs to be released on t-tunes now!! The Verve continue to climb and now beak the top 5 with Love Is Noise and with physical release still 3 weeks away, how much further can it climb?

 

The Last Shadow Puppets rise for the seventh week, now possibly peaking at 6. A couple of fallers next, MGMT to 7 and Kylie to 8 both ahead of top 10 newbies from Bloc Party with the refreshingly different Mercury and the fabulous Freemasons mix of Solange Knowles’ I Decided at 10.

Commentary

 

Chart 125 – Viva La Vida! Coldplay have now got this years longest running chart topper at 7 weeks – plus beating their own record run at the top of 6 weeks with Speed Of Sound back in 2005! Lets see what next week brings – can it beat the 8 week record run of Gorillaz’s Feel Good Inc? BWO (Bodies Without Organs) from Sweden have this weeks runners up spot, with the camp euro-tastic tune Lay Your Love On Me. Believe it or not, this was the runner up to represent the Swedes in Eurovision this year, but missed out to Charlotte Perrelli. The Verve rise again, this time into the top 3 – can they rise any higher (I would think so after most of my hints over the last couple of weeks…). Adele drops to 4 with the gorgeous Hometown Glory and finally in the ol top 5 are the Tings Tings with the still very catchy Shut Up And Let Me Go.

 

A small surprise at 6, another song I love a bit late – this time from The Kooks with the exceeding good Shine On, who rise just ahead of risers from Bloc Party at 7 and Ultrabeat and Darren Styles at 8. Two more risers finish off the top 10 as Solange Knowles creeps up a place to 9 and Katy Perry cracks the top 10 at 10.

Jesters Commentary

 

Chart 126 – finally a new number1! Coldplay have slipped to 2, meaning that The Verve get their third number 1 from me (their previous Top Tunes chart toppers are giants Bittersweet Symphony and The Drugs Don’t Work) with the excellent Love Is Noise. Coldplay nearly hung on potentially thwarting my long laid plans as the fabulous video for Viva La Vida was released this week (finally). Lets see how long The Verve can hold off challengers for their crown – most likely being either Keane, who released their own online freebie this week in the shape of the 80s soaked Spiralling, which is my highest new entry at 3. Also keep an eye on Will Young who will be eligible to chart in just two weeks. All these shenanigans mean that BWO have dropped to 4, but still stay ahead of the ever rising Bloc Party with Mercury.

 

Adele also drops a couple, but keeps Katy Perry in check as she rises to 7. How much more Katy can rise on my chart depends on how fed up I get of it in the many weeks before its physical release, when I suspect it will have been number 1 on the official chart for the whole month! Solange (odd name, but then again, Beyonce is too when you think about it!) Knowles rises again to 8, Duffy has her third top 10 hit from me (and potential third chart topper?) in the form of the Walk On By-esque Stepping Stone at 9 and to finish off an eventful top 10, The Ting Tings drop a whole 5 places to 10 with Shut Up and Let Me Go.

 

Other new entries this week are from: Rihanna (11), Portishead (12) and Sharleen Spiteri (18). The sole non top 10 climber is Alphabeat which climbs from 23-21.

Chart 126 – The Verve hold on at Number 1 for a second week, in fact the whole of the top 4 remains the same as last week as Coldplay stick at 2 with Viva La Vida, Keane at 3 with Spiralling and BWO stays at 4. Duffy climbs however, from 9 to 5 with Stepping Stone (not Sleeping Stone as i-tunes unhelpfully calls it!). Rihanna climbs into the top 10 at 6 as Disturbia becomes her highest placed hit to date on my chart – we will see if this climbs more next week. Katy Perry sticks at 7, two fallers at 8 and 9 from Bloc Party and Adele, and finally in the top 10, Portishead climb from 12 with We Carry On – could this give them their third #1 of the year?!

Jesters Commentary

 

Chart 129 – Will Young has a spectacular debut hit at the top with his ‘comeback’ Changes. This is the lead track from Let It Go, which will be released on 29 September. Changes also breaks a chart rule (maybe I should abandon my chart rules!) by charting 5 weeks in advance not 4. Hmmm. Sharleen Spiteri rises to 2 from 11 with the amazing smooth All The Times I Cried. I have only recently got into this wonderful song, as it has been out for a few weeks already! Coldplay dfrop to 3 with their 10th week in my top 3, Rihanna’s Disturbia rises to 4 (and could well still peak) and Duffy holds on at 5 with Stepping Stone.

 

Last weeks number 1 from The Verve drops a tad to 6, still just ahead of marmite track I Kissed A Girl. Keane also drop, 5 places to 8, Portishead rise to 9 and BWO look like having their last week in my top 10 at 10.

Chart 130 – Will Young holds on at 1 for a second straight week as the excellent video gains a bit of momentum, but Biffy Clyro snaps at his heels with the brilliant Mountains – this was in contention for the top spot for most of the week! Rounding off the top 3, Eric Prydz climbs 18 places from 21 to 3 with the rather superb Pjanno. Coldplay continue their slow drop to 4 and the weeks highest new entry is at 5 – now this surely is a future chart topper – Sex On Fire from the Kings Of Leon is just such an addictive song!

 

Due to the high climbers the bottom half of the top 10 comprises of fallers from Sharleen Spiteri, Rihanna and Duffy (the latter two have peaked lower than they should have for now) but Portishead hold firm at 9 with We Carry On. Finally in the top 10, The Verve suffer a hefty fall to 10.

Chart 131 – Will Young spends his third week at the top, but it looks increasingly unlikely he will keep either Biffy Clyro or an ever rising Kings Of Leon at bay for long. Eric Prydz drops to 4 while Coldplay still occupy the top 5 with Viva La Vida at 5. I am daring myself to let VLV occupy every top 10 position, but I think I will get fed up too quick! Alphabeat rise to 6 with possibly their best song to date, Boyfriend. This very 80s inspired track is their third top 10 hit for me and well deserved too. Posrtishead look like peaking at 7 with We Carry On and is their only track to date to not hit my top spot. Rihanna slides to 8 and Sharleen Spiteri also slides to 9. Oasis grab this weeks highest new entry at 10 with the excellent Shock Of The Lightning. Don’t be shocked to see them at the top before long.

Chart 132 – Kings Of Leon have nudged Will Young down to 2 and claimed the top spot with utter stormer of a tune Sex On Fire! Will has broken a record on my chart – he is the first song to peak at the top for a couple of weeks before physical release (Coldplay excepted which has never been released) as Changes is not out for another 2 weeks. Will it hold on at 2 instead? Biffy Clyro drop to 3, just ahead of Alphabeat who nudge themselves up to 4, who are ahead of Oasis, rising 5 to 5.

 

Coldplay continue their every position in the top 10 drop to 6, Eric Prydz drops to 7 and Rihanna sticks at 8. Climbing into the top 10 are Sigur Ros at 9 and Sonny J at 10.

MIA rises to 6 from last weeks re-entry, and looks certain to beat the previous peak of 4 for Paper Planes. Coldplay continue their slide at 7, The Feeling enter the top 10 at 8 with Join With Us, and its good to hear them back on form, even if it is for one song! Biffy Clyro slips to 9 and Alphabeat slide to 10.

Chart 134 – In a very close race MGMT have secured their first ever Top Tunes #1 with the rather superb Kids, the highlight of Oracular Spectacular. Settling for #2 this week is Ladyhawke as Dusk Til’ Dawn rises to 2 from last weeks 3 just ahead of Oasis, who looked a dead cert a couple of weeks ago to be #1 by now – hmmm. Another strong challenger is MIA as Paper Planes reaches the same peak it did earlier in the year on its re-entry in the chart. Rounding off the top 5 is last weeks chart topper from Kings Of Leon.

 

Will Young slides just one to 6 after being released this week as a physical, Snow patrol climb from 11 to 7 with their newie Take Back The City, Coldplay drop just one (again!) to 8 in their 15th week in my top 10, the Sugababes climb to 9 with marmite-esque Girls and Iglu & Hartly debut at 10.
