Jesters Commentary

 

Chart 135 – It has been over 24 weeks in the making, but MIA’s Paper Planes has finally peaked on my chart at the top of the pile, no less! Oasis nearly pipped her at the post, but The Shock Of The Lightning has to settle for 2 for now. I think MIA snuck it as although The Shock Of The Lightning is brilliant, and a return to form not seen in years, the chorus strays towards the much hated (by me) Lyla which I think helped MIA in the end! Last weeks top 2 drop to 3 and 4, but with less competition both MGMT and Ladyhawke could have held on. Rounding off the top 5 is a climber from Snow Patrol – will it climb any more?

 

Rising to 6 is marmite-esque Girls from the dear old Sugababes, probably now peaking just outside the top 5. Kings of Leon drop to 7 with their former number 1 Sex On Fire, Will Young drops to 8 with former number 1 Changes, and Coldplay drop to 9 with 7 week number 1 Viva La Vida! The Saturdays rise to 10 with the excellent pop-fest Up – see this one doing as it’s name suggests in the coming weeks!

Jesters Commentary

 

Chart 136 – MIA comfortably keeps her hold on the top spot with Paper Planes on its 25th week on my chart! Snow Patrol rather predictably rise to 2 – Take Back The City is the second runner up on my chart as Signal Fire managed to rise to 2 last year. The Saturdays have risen from 10 to 3 to get their first top 3 hit and well deserved too! Oasis drop to 4 and MGMT have another week in the top 5 with the fab Kids.

 

Rising to 6, Girls Aloud’s The Promise is a right stormer of a pop tune – watch this rise again next week! I still have a huge crush on Cheryl Tweedy KINKKINK. Keane are on the up with great 80s/A-ha-esque Lovers Are Losing at 7, Ladyhawke falls to 8, just ahead of The Last Shadow Puppets rising to 9 and Viva La Vida has its last week (I promise) in my top 10 at 10.

Chart 137 – Coldplay instantly score their third chart topper of the year as Lost! crashes straight in at number 1! Lost! Is released on 10 November as part of a digital bundle with Lost? (acoustic Lost!) and a version featuring Jay-Z. The Saturdays rise to a well deserved 2 with the excellent Up, just ahead of fellow girl group Girls Aloud at 3. A surprise at 4 from Chairlift – Brusies is the track from the new ipod nano advert and is pleasantly mellow. Next at 5 is Clowns from Goldfrapp,the fourth single release from the evergreen Seventh Tree.

The Saturdays drop just a couple to 4 ahead from another climber as The Last Shadow Puppets climb a couple to claim their second top 5 hit of the year.

 

Goldfrapp’s Clowns drop slightly to 6, the weeks biggest climber is at 7 as The Guru Josh Project (good tune awful lyrics) climbs from 21 to 7 with the rework of Infinity and Keane drop a couple to 8. The highest new entry of the week is from the returning Killers who debut at 9 and I suspect will rise a lot in the coming weeks. Chart 140 – The Killers rise from 5 to take their third top tunes number 1 with Human (are we human, or are we dancers – does that not make sense?!) and have beaten off some very strong competition from Chairlift, who rise a place to 2, and Friendly Fires who I seriously considered as number 1 for most of the week, as Paris leaps from 15 to 3! Another climber is from Christian Falk and Robyn as Dream On is at 4, just ahead of last weeks number 1 from Coldplay at 5.

 

Girls Aloud drop to 6 and Katy Perry matches the peak of I Kissed at Girl at 7 with newie Hot N Cold. Adele drops to 8 as Britney climbs to 9 with Womanizer while the Bond theme from jack White & Alicia Keys rises to 10.

Chart 141 – Despite very strong competition The Killers hang on at the top for a second week with the excellent, if oddly lyriced Human. Friendly Fires rise to 2 with Paris and Christian Falk and Robyn (the main competition for number 1) rise a place to 3. Down to 4 are Chairlift, and sticking at 5 are Coldplay as Lost+ (Lost! with Jay-Z) is finally released and the highest new entry this week comes from Leona Lewis as Run, a cover of the Snow patrol classic, debuts at 6 following her brilliant performance on the X Factor last night. Katy Perry sticks at 7, Girls Aloud fall to 8, Duffy rises to 9 and Britney drops to 10.

Chart 142 – Well, this has to be one of my busiest charts ever! There is a lot of good music out at the mo, and I keep forgetting to chart songs so I am slowly catching up. Leona manages her second JTT number 1 (after Bleeding Love of course) with Run – this is just a superb cover of the Snow Patrol classic and Leona has given it a new perspective which is rare with covers these days. I kind of feel for Christian Falk and Robyn as I had originally ear-marked Dream On for at least 3 weeks at number 1, but things change and they will now have to settle for number 2. The Killers drop to 3 with Human, and this could have easily stayed at the top in most other of my charts in the year, but 3 they are! Friendly Fires drop to 4, and to round off the top 5, Lost sticks at 5 and is this weeks only non mover!

 

Duffy rises to 6 with Rain On Your Parade, the Bond song that never was, Britney manages a new peak at 7 with Womanizer after dropping last week, Neon Neon (made up in part of the lead singer of the Super Furry Animals) rise to 8, Santi (previously Santogold) rises to 9 with Say A-ha and finally in the top 10, Kings Of Leon nab this weeks highest new enrty as Use Somebody finally gets the chance to enter the chart.

 

The other new entries this week are from: Same Difference (11), Sneaky Sound System (16), The Script (22), Pussycat Dolls (23) and Ladyhawke (28). Climbers include: Alesha Dixon (21-12), Take That (26-13), Will Young (15-14) and Alphabeat (29-25).

Chart 143 – Leona holds on at 1 for another week with the beautiful Run and it is finally released on i-tunes now, so hopefully it will shoot to the top of the official chart next week! Neon Neon score a number 2 hit with Dream cars, and Santi/Santogold has her biggest hit at 3 with Say A-ha (now used in a car advert). Kings of Leon rise to 4 with Use Somebody, Christian Falk and Robyn drop to 5, The Killers drop to 6 and Coldplay drop to 7. Leading 2 risers are Take That at 8 as Greatest Day is their biggest hit for me since Shine in 2007 (Rule The World sadly peaked at 11 but stayed in the chart for ages) and Same Difference defy the odds as catchy as hell We R One rises to 9. Finally in the top 10, Friendly Fires drop to 10.

I suspect Run will be my Christmas #1 as well next week :o Talking of Christmas, the very festive Warm This Winter from Gabriella Cilmi climbs to 2 from outside the top 10 to give her her biggest JTT hit to date. Also climbing are Sneaky Sound System at 3 with the quirky UFO, who end up just ahead of Kings of Leon dropping to 4 and Santogold who drops to 5.

 

The Killers remain Human at 6 for a 3rd week, ahead of 3 climbers from Snow Patrol at 7, Will Young at 8 and La Roux at 9. Frankmusik grab the highest new entry this week and the final spot in the top 10.

Chart 146 – My third official Christmas Chart! Leona holds on at number 1 for a fifth week, and in the process gives me number 1s that have spent 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7 weeks at the top this year! The highest new entry from X Factor winner Alexandra Burke at 2 could stop Run getting a six week erm, run at the top. James Morrison and Nelly Furtado climb to 3 this week from 29 – a huge 26 place climb, just ahead of Gabriella Cilmi, last weeks runner up and la Roux who climbs to 5 from last week’s 9.

 

Snow Patrol continue their slow ascent at 6 and FrankMusik make it to 7 from 10. The top 10 is finished off by 3 fallers from Kings Of Leon at 8, The Killers at 9 and Sneaky Sound System at 10.

 

The sole new entry this week is from Beyonce at 16, but there are many climbs that I cba to list as no one reads this anyway 

Chart 147 – Not much change this week as it the last chart of the year and there are no new entries, as per my usual tradition! Alexandra climbs to the top spot as she has released the only X Factor debut song that I really liked (not a patch on Jeff Buckley’s version, but still pretty impressive). Climbers in the top 10 are James Morrison and Nelly Furtado to 2, Snow Patrol to 4, FrankMusik to 6, Kings Of Leon back up to 7, Ladyhawke to 8 and Sugababes to 10.

 

Outside the top 10, Beyonce climbs to 13, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida rebounds to 16 and Chairlift to 17.
