Sven-Goran Eriksson has been told he will be sacked as Manchester City manager at the end of the season, BBC Sport understands.

City owner Thaksin Shinawatra told Eriksson he was "not the right man for the job" at a meeting on Sunday, a source close to the manager said.

Eriksson informed the players at training on Monday that he would be dismissed, provoking an angry response.

The Swede, who has two years left on his contract, says he will not resign.

Shinawatra has been unhappy with City's results since the turn of the year.

Personally I think this is absolutely stupid by Sinawatra. He might have had a lot of money to spend, but you can't just spend your way to the top, well, not in most cases anyway and he's done a really good job at Man City this season. If they hadn't had all of the injuries they'd have on defense then I expect they'll have been fighting with Villa and Everton for the UEFA Cup place at the moment.

This is one of the most bizzare cases we've had in a while. At the start of the season Shinawatra outlined his plans for the next 3 years. Season One - finish top 10. Season Two - Finish top 6 & get into Europe. Season Three - Finish top 4 & get into Champions League.

Has Sven met his demands? Yes, yes he has. They're GUARANTEED a top 10 finishing. Another case of a club wanting to be too big, too soon.

I hope Man City go down if that is the case.

Sven was doing fine as England manager, and only got the sack thanks to the press who decided THEY wanted a change, and look where that led us, missed out on Euro 2008. Sven only ever lost 1 qualifier, and went out in the tournaments due to the curse of penalties. Obviously too early to judge how Capello is doing until the qualifiers are in full flow.

Sven wasn't that good as England manager. We were playing appalling football and he bottled it in every big game we had, penalties or no penalties.

He's become a victim of his own success at City, if the season had happened in reverse I think he'd be fine. After the first few months they cleaarly expected to end up being better than 9th...

I hope Man City go down if that is the case.

Weren't England knocked out of the 2002 World Cup, when, despite being a man up v Brazil, they played like it was them who had the player sent off?

As Jo (a Man City fan) as said, "if that's his response, he can takes his money and shove where the sun doesn't shine". And that's rare from her, considering how laid-back she is. It seems like he's forgotten than Man City only scored 10 goals at home last season, the last of which came on New Year's Day.

Brazil = like the best team in the world. Was it Sven's fault that a lapse in concentration let Rivaldo have a whole half of the pitch to himself  Was it Sven's fault Seaman couldn't run backwards :P

Only Terry Vegetables has done better recently with England with Euro 1996. Then you can go back to Sir Bobby Robson.

Was certainly his fault at the last world cup... Only taking four strikers of which one wasn't fit, one is notoriously injury prone, one who'd only played a handful of Championship games and one who was Peter Crouch.

The Theo Walcott thing was the ONLY bad thing I had to say about him really.. and we replaced him with one of the worst managers around :manson: Even the Boro fans were happy when he left to become England manager

Given time and money I think City can challenge for the top four personally.. They did the double over US this season so I don't see why any City fan would want him to go!

Oh how it would be ironic if Manchester City got into the UEFA Cup by the Fair Play draw, which England are in the draw for. Man City would get the spot apparently.

o lol!

England have been drawn from the Fair play pot, and it looks like Manchester City are in Europe

England lands extra Uefa Cup slot

BBC Sport News

England will have an additional club in next season's Uefa Cup after topping Europe's fair play rankings.

The place will be awarded to the best-behaved Premier League team that does not qualify for European competition next term.

Manchester City are the side who would qualify in the current Premier League fair play standings.

City, whose final game is at Middlesbrough on Sunday, qualified for the Uefa Cup on the same basis in 2003.

The Premier League has confirmed that the team that qualifies will only be determined after all 380 top-flight matches have ended - so the final outcome will be decided after Sunday's game.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's side currently stand fifth in the fair play table, behind Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool - who are all already guaranteed a place in continental competition.

Everton and Fulham are the other teams in contention to qualify, although David Moyes' side will enter the Uefa Cup automatically if they get a point against Newcastle at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Hopefully this means he won't be sacked afterall then ^_^ But somehow I doubt it <_<

TO be honest I can't see Scolari doing it. He couldn't cop the media pressure every couple of months, never mind day in day out.

Yeah i'd be very suprised if Sven stays with Man City now, I just can't see him staying.

Scolari would be an good choice I reckon, but I dunno, there's just something about him I don't like.
