Do you have a source for that Kate? If you do, then it sounds more like he's going into a mental home...

Why the HELL will he get special treatment? He's a pig who needs to be castrated and fed to the male prisoners who'll teach him a few things about life behind bars. -_-
i cant see what there is to 'discuss' here, lets talk about the reasons it happened, things like that, i dont want a thread full of knee jerk, lynch mob mentality replies. yes he IS evil, yes what he did WAS despicable , yes he does want 'sorting', but this forum aint the place for venting feelings like that without some sort of discussion or debate element to it.

He is,

He will be carrying out his sentance in a institution until he is 'better' then he will serve the rest of his sentance in a prision.

My question is, is the wife going to be prosecuted...? I mean, come on, no way did she NOT have an idea of what was going on..... She's either the most stupid woman ever to have existed or she's a liar..... It's not like she's Sonya Sutcliffe, or even Maxine Carr, her husband was doing this $h!t IN THEIR HOME, WHEN SHE WAS THERE..... She needs to be made to answer some very serious questions.... <_<

Yes the Daily Mirror. Even when he does serve his sentance in a prison, he will still have a much better life in the jail than his daughter did.

Didn't the dad make his daughter write letters to her mother explaining that she ran away from home? But she must have suspected at least something or wondered why her husband went off in the basement almost every day.

So, er, she didn't look at the post-marks then.....? Surely any mother who gave a damn about her kid would have gone off searching for them, or hire a Private detective, or show the letters to the police.....

I'll back my knee-jerk lynch mob mentality comment up, then.

The reason why him allegedly getting "special" treatment enrages me so much is because he has been charged with negligent murder, enslavement, incest, rape, coercion and false imprisonment. PLUS he was previously convicted of rape in 1967, where he spent 18 months in jail.

Lets say this was your average 23 year-old bloke and he pleaded guilty to rape, he'd get whatever you'd get for a rape case (I don't know how many years it is) and he'd be sent to your standard prison, where he'd probably know about the horrors in which he inflicted on the girl or guy he raped.

Now, Fritzl raped his daughter 3000 times (apparently), threatened her, neglected one baby which led to his death, enslaved his daughter and imprisoned her for 24 years. What I don't get is why he's going to get all this:

* Own cell with shower, TV and personal computer

* A small pet “for company”

* Choice of plants and pictures to decorate cell

* Good natural light and a view of prison courtyard

* Classes including ceramics, basketry, woodwork and carpet-making

What's the actual difference than him being under house-arrest? Okay, you could argue that he has severe mental issues, but that's why we have psychiatric hospitals. You could also argue the fact that's he's 70-something year's old, but men his age are in prisons around the world when they've done much less, and they don't have any of the above luxuries.

Maybe there is some out-of-this-world reason as to why he's being treated like Paris Hilton, but if there isn't, then the Austrians have a lot to answer for.

The scandal deepened as more details came to light this weekend.

For the first time, a relative of Fritzl's family has come forward to speak publicly about the man and his secrets.

Christine R., Fritzl's sister-in-law, said in a video interview, which aired on several Austrian TV channels, that he was convicted of rape about the same time that Elisabeth was born.

He served 18 months in jail for the offense in 1967, while his wife, Rosemarie, tried to keep her young family together.

Christine, whose last name was not revealed, said the man was a tyrant who ruled his house like a military dictator.

"He tolerated no dissent," she said in the interview. "Josef Fritzl, who was known as 'Sepp,' scared everybody in the family. I was scared myself. I never felt confident to say anything that could possibly offend him."

"Sepp had a regular routine," she said. "He would go into the cellar in the morning and spend all day down there, and often he would spend the night. Questions about why he was down there for so long were banned. My sister Rosemarie was not even allowed to bring him a cup of coffee. Rosie and the kids lived in complete fear of him."

Christine said the man treated his children like soldiers under his command. Everybody had to be silent when he entered the room.

From http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Story?id=4788084&page=2 - if you were wondering why the mother didn't seem to understand.

After Elisabeth's disappearance, her mother filed a missing person report. Almost a month later, her father handed over a letter to the police, the first of several that Elisabeth would be forced to write while in captivity. The letter was postmarked in the town of Braunau. It stated that she was staying with a friend and was tired of living with her family, warning her parents not to look for her or she would leave the country. Her father stated to police that she had most likely joined a religious sect.

well true, but just how can you actually punish him?... there is no punishment that could equate to the years of horror he inflicted.

That's also true. But I just think giving him these privileges is like a kick in the teeth for his daughter.
