yep... thats about it. im guessing by experience that the saturdays might not live up to the hype, but i might be wrong as my first initial thoughts on the spice girls were.

Ok, I just wanted to hear an opinion from someone who would have been of the age to have a proper opinion on the Spice Girls when they were first around.

I agree with you about The Saturdays, I'm a bit indifferent and don't think they'll live up to the hype, but we'll see.

first thoughts are 'sweet dreams my la ex'...

That's the one, I thought it reminded me of something but didn't know quite what.

I think Set Me Off sounds very sort of 2004-ish, not in that it's dated, but just it kind of uses the darkish pop-dance sound that was quite popular around then, especially with Rachel's music.

From the popjustice forum:

There's an interview with Frankie and Rochelle in this week's ZOO Magazine, where they say that Girls Aloud are the only good girlband around today.

 At least they have good music taste.

Well I always knew the Saturdays couldn't possibly be flawless...and now it's apparent that they aren't.
lol.. i like girls aloud, and sugababes, but to ignore the sugababes was very stupid. if the saturdays ever surpass the sugababes then they can diss them.
 At least they have good music taste.

They would say that, they supported them. I think it would be rude if they didn't say they liked Girls Aloud.

Girls Aloud and Sugababes are both good girl groups, I prefer Sugababes though.

Well, there is a difference between saying "we love GA" and "GA is the only good band around" :P

And since some of their fans think they are really involved in the making of their music (somewhat), they would be now silly to think they're not free to say they love SB too.

Did you really think "Wannabe" was a good song and that the Spice Girls would make it from when they were at the stage that The Saturdays are at now? If I was this age in 1996 I would have thought the Spice Girls would have been just a fad and no one would remember them in a few years judging by "Wannabe" - much like we are now with The Saturdays. I just don't think "Wannabe" is that great a song and I'm a huge fan of the Spice Girls.

Don't take this as some kind of 'attack' on you - I'm not a huge fan of this song and I'm genuinely hearing from someone who was old enough at the time if they really thought the Spice Girls would be big or if they were just an overhyped girl band.

Yes,

What you have to remember back in July 1996, chart music was dominated by boy bands and Brit Pop. Take That had just split up, and 90%+ of chart singles debuted at their peak position often spending just one or two weeks at #1 before dropping McFly/"Singing In The Rain" style.

The Spice Girls first had commercial success in South East Asia & Japan before releasing "Wannabe" in the UK, and they debuted at #3 behind Gary Barlow's Forever Love which debuted at #1, and the FuGees "Killing Me Softly" down a place to #2. But the next week the single climbed 2 places to UK#1, where it stayed for 7 weeks in total, including stopping the debut singles by Robbie Williams "Freedom" & Peter Andre "Mysterious Girl" & Underworld's "Born Slippy" reaching #1 when they were expected to top the charts.

Back in 1996 the biggest girl bands were Eternal, TLC & En Vogue - none of these acts had had a UK#1 hit single.

Also you have to remember that their manager Simon Fuller was not a big deal back then (at the time he only managed Annie Lennox & Cathy Dennis, with S Club 7, S Club Juniors & the Idol Franchise were well off in the future). Indeed the Spice Girls were rejected by BMG's then UK head of A&R Simon Cowell for signing, as he did not see their potential, before finally signing for Virgin/EMI. Whilst Smash Hits initially refused to put them on the front cover, because "teenage girls only like boybands & male singers".

In short the Spice Girls were only hyped after they had their initial success, which then saw record companies scramble to sign girl groups like All Saints, B*Witched, Atomic Kitten, Girl Thing, Thunderbugs, etc. And the rest as they say is history. A bit like all these retro style singers (Duffy, Adele, Gabrielle Cilmi, etc) who have been signed in the wake of Amy Winehouse's success right now.

The Spice Girls were the perfect package, because they had 5 separate personalities (including their cut & paste vocalising on their singles were each sung their little bit which had not been used since the late 1960s/early 1970s by the Temptations & Sly & The Family Stone) which young girls could identify with one of them. Even Take That if you are being brutally honest only had 3 strong personalities as Howard & Jason were too similar. Whilst they had that Beatles type of attitude to the media/interviews with their banter, plus their first three singles were amongst (if not the greatest ever) 1-2-3 releases in music history for impact.

Thanks for responding - it's interesting to see what someone who was old enough thought about them. Being 6 at the time, I can't really remember what the music scene was like around then, although I did know the Spice Girls were one of the only girl bands around at the time. (I'd realised TLC were around before them since then but didn't know about Eternal and En Vogue) I also didn't realise Simon Fuller wasn't a big name until the Spice Girls.

The Spice Girls were rejected by BMG's then UK head of A&R Simon Cowell for signing, as he did not see their potential,

proof, if any were really needed, that Cowell wouldn't know (or be able to spot) genuine, bona fide talent if it kicked his false teeth out.

That will surely rile the Sugababes fans!

I can't believe they said that :o THE bast*rdS  joe king

thought unfortunately a year later Eternal teamed up with BeBe Winans - and released i wanna be the only one - a record so bad that you wish you could put 2 faced in that slot instead  (ow! ow!)

btw arent the Saturdays like Girls Aloud both signed to Polydors pop offshoot label called Fascination...and isnt it true that most of the staff are like former editors from TOTP magazine...including the bloke who invented the Baby Spice, Posh Spice, Ginger Spice naming idea - the idea which he knicked from a Smash Hits magazine feature with Rita-rocking-pop-punks We've Got A Fuzzbox and we're gonna use it????

Oh my goodness, im again having to wade through loads of posts just verging on being something to do with The Saturdays. Can we not create a topic on girbands past and present and then just leave purely The Saturdays in this thread? Its so tedious, when in every other post in the pop forum you can get into many things about the artist but here to have to get through loads of old youtube videos and discussions about past girlbands and how 'The Saturdays pale in comparison' and 'how they're going to flop'.

Im not trying to be direspectful but its just a bit tedious reading the same thing everyday, although people will know doubt have something to bring up about my post and cause more (verging on) off topic ranting.

The Saturdays are now on the Radio 1 B-List

(is THAT Saturdays related enough for you coolnav?)

No need to be sarcastic now!

Although that IS great news, im so so so happy!

As the new girl band on the block, how do you plan to steal the crowns of Girls Aloud and the Sugababes?

We are not trying to steal anyone’s crown. We just want to be as successful as those great girl bands. We really respect them.

They DO love Sugababes, pheww!

If you want everyone to stay on topic at all times, then you clearly don't get how forums work - DISCUSSION.
