Ok, so who are?!

12 million people watching Cheryl and the girls as her 'team' this month on the X Factor.

An Audience With... Girls Aloud airing the xmas.

A new album and single this year.

Their autobiography.

Their massive 35 DATE arena/summer tour.

DOMINATING the tabloids day in, day out.

Their own tv show for ITV2.

KitKat adverts/sponsership.

Appearing on the main stage at V Festival in 2 weeks time.

It may not be completely down to the music sales, but as a whole they are without doubt the biggest UK girlband around.

This is not the place to be discussing this, but you are completely right in my opinion! I have been thinking the same as this for ages. It's not all about the sales.

anyways I reckon The Saturdays will chart at #7 today.. and stay about the same next week. Its obv not going to be a huge success BUT I dont think it will be a major flop either.

I know, but it was relevant.

If they cant get GA anywhere near no.1, how do they expect a new girband with less than a sixth of the fans they have to get anywhere near no.1 either?!!

I think Fascination will be pleased with no.8/no.7 and will now look at it as stong ground for the release of the far superior 'Up' next month.

What the heck you talking about...? Course she is.... Duffy is basically a modern-day equivalent of Dusty Springfield, erm, so Dusty wasn't a "mere" Pop Star either I take it. Dusty certainly tried different styles, but she essentially remained a "Pop Star".... GAWD, why is it that people want to try and totally mis-label things......??? Duffy is POP..... Beth Gibbons (Portishead) on the other hand, you could say SHE is a Blues/Soul singer....

Duffy doesnt sound anything like dusty..so there goes that theory.

Like i already said, duffy is pop as in popular. But shes not what most people would define as 'pop' she is 'soul'. Pop shouldn't be classed as one thing, there is lots of sub classifications in pop. The saturdays for example are 'pure pop', they are not pop-soul, pop-rnb etc etc. They are the pure thing, thats what people are referring to. Everything that is popular is technically 'pop'.

If beth gibbons (to use your example) became massive, she would be pop, but it doesnt change the fact she does soul/blues music.

Re: the argument about the UK's biggest girlband (again :heehee:) it's simply immeasurable. Being honest, 'biggest' could possibly only be measured by a mass-scale survey of some sort when sales aren't exactly worlds apart, and since no such thing has happened, there's no way of knowing. Let's leave it by saying that Girls Aloud and Sugababes are very much equals on the scene.

Very good for the Saturdays. Sales of around 16k or upwards would be nice...

Rubbish, absolute rubbish.

If the song was so good then from the amount of money the record company thrown in then a huge hit would of been expected, many acts go straight in

at number 1 with their debut single, so to scrape the top 10 is a flop on disastrous levels in it falls out the top 20 within a few weeks.

The only reason Girls Alouds last few singles have been less successful is because they aren't up to the quality of previous material, they haven't exactly done bad with them though at all.

I think #8 is a excellent position for a new unheard of girl band!

Unheard? They've had massive promo... And it happens all the time that "new" acts go straight at #1 with their debut release! You don't need a big fanbase to go to #1 (look at Madonna "Give it 2 me" or Kylie last singles lol).

And Girls Aloud last few singles haven't been "less" successful than previously!

"Call The Shots" is their 2nd biggest single sales wise (but #1 airplay wise and long chart running wise) and "Can't Speak French" is among their best selling singles too (and probably their 3rd longest running single in the charts - 20 weeks). That's hardly less successful.

I meant unheard of before this single, plus I'm sure there are lots of people who wouldn't have a clue who they are If I mentioned them
I think #8 is a excellent position for a new unheard of girl band!

No, #8 is p***-POOR considereing the HUGE hype, the HUGE marketing campaign, and the HUGE 400 grand investement put into them; "unheard of"???? Christ man, they've hardly been OUT the media of OFF the telly....

These types of manufactured act are DEFINED by how many units they shift and if they get into the Top 3 in the first week.... A Pop Group that don't "sell" in the short-term are no use to their record company.... They cant exactly back it up by claiming to make "music destined to be Classic.....", it's disposable, here today, gone tomorrow stuff....

Duffy doesnt sound anything like dusty..so there goes that theory.

I said she was a Modern-Day EQUIVALENT (which is not the same thing as saying they are musically the same), this is 2008 NOT the 60s, obviously the music itself is of a more contemporary style..... People compare the likes of Amy Winehouse and Beth Gibbons to Billie Holliday and other past Blues/Soul artists....

Please at least show me the respect of reading my posts....

I stand by my comparison, there can't possibly be any denying that Duffy is hugely influenced by Dusty Springfield....

The song hasn't even been in the airplay Top 30! They've had 3 performances on terrestrial TV over the last month. Hardly 'everywhere'...

Thats what I meant, I didn't mean completley unheard of, just worded it wrong..

Hardly shocking, fanbases buy physicals and boost sales in the first week... :heehee:

It's only #11 isn't it?

Sorry Jark but if I find one week in the top10 surprising and quite bad and I feel like putting a :o in my post, I don't see what's wrong with that, you don't need to make a comment everytime I put a :o in my posts... <_<

And you may be as satisfied as you want with their "one week in the top10 fantastic run for a debut act" (etc etc), I don't think the label will keep them signed forever if that's all what they're able to do.
