May 10, 200817 yr Why not? I think 3 days in the iTunes top two would give anything a chance... Well, on the "almost Saturday chart" davetaylor posted they were only #37, I can't see it climbing 27+ places in the space of a day regardless, especially as it has now slipped a place on iTunes since then. Plus according to davetaylor 'Viva La Vida' is only charting on iTunes and no other download sites...
May 10, 200817 yr Apparently when you pre-order the album from iTunes, you recieve free acoustic tracks, of Lost and Lovers-Live in Japan. You can then also download Viva La Vida immediately. But does that mean the track is then given to you free, or do you have to pay for it? This info taken from www.coldplay.com Quoting myself here, but this could be the reason why there seems to be a sales problem, of Viva La Vida. Obviously, if you order the track on it`s own, you pay for it. But it might be free, with a pre-order of the album???? This would account, for the low position in the combined chart, because on iTunes some of the sales may not have been payed for. It will be interesting to see, what happens tomorrow on Radio One. The plot thickens..... Thinking that Violet Hill, was around number 7 last night, then we are looking on about 12,000 sales by Sunday. Most of them from iTunes. Take about 3,000 off, for HMV that leaves 9,000 on itunes....telling us Viva La Vida, has had less than 9,000 takers on iTunes, i.e if the total reaches 7 or 8 thousand, it should be around the top 15 tomorrow. If not, then all the takers, have not payed for it. Almost 3,950 bought the number 37 single last week. When you take into account, Viva La Vida was 37 last night, then there is a big question mark here!
June 5, 200817 yr Does anybody know why Viva La Vida (the song) is not appearing on the Official UK Singles Chart? I heard that the Official Charts Company disqualified it because the track could be downloaded after pre-ordering the album. However, it is also possible to download the individual song just like any other for 79p (as I did a few weeks ago), so I can't understand why it would not be chart eligible. Surely they can distinguish between the downloads made from pre-ordering of the album and those made from purchasing the individual song? As far as I can tell, the album and track are being promoted in the same way in the United States and the track has gone Top 10 in the Billboard Hot 100 so it seems a shame that its success is being registered in America, but not here. I'm a big fan of the UK Singles Chart, but it turns into a bit of a farce if the #2 track on iTunes has been disqualified from it for no good reason... or have I missed something!?! I'm not a Coldplay super-fan or anything (although I do like the track), but it has started to niggle me a bit that I don't know what's going on! So if anyone has any answers I would be most grateful! Cheers! :)

June 6, 200817 yr It will be eligible, from next Friday, when the album is released, and then free-downloads will cease.. I dont know if it will chart well though as obviously the album will be available then. Its a really good idea to release an album song early like that, it really gets some hype up and doesn't really need any marketing or anything. Not only will everyone who bought VLV probably buy the album, but it will probably have encouraged more to see what else is on there. Its kinda like an extra single with no cost atall.
June 8, 200817 yr It will be eligible, from next Friday, when the album is released, and then free-downloads will cease.. Thanks for the info Dave! So I guess the system can't distinguish between the downloads made from pre-ordering the album and those made from buying the individual track, so they've simply excluded all of them, which is a shame. When a song is getting airplay and is selling in reasonably high numbers, but doesn't appear on the official chart, I think it does damage the charts reputation a bit. I should say though, I think it's great what the Official Charts Company have done over the last few years regarding modifying the chart to include all digital sales as I think it's renewed interest in the chart and it's become more reflective of what people are really listening to. However, I hope they look to rectify this issue now they are aware that it can occur. After all, the chart is supposed to be a representation of what people are buying and clearly this is a situation where the current system doesn't work perfectly... Anyway, at least I know whats happening now and can sleep at night again! :)
