My favourite song from the best album by far I have bought this year, and a potential album of the decade is being released as a single. :w00t:

If Radio 1 snub this and refuse to playlist this (because they'll be too busy straight to A listing the new single Give It 2 Me by a 49 year old female whom like her wannabe Australian equivalent is suddenly making creatively near bankrupt music past her sell by date, like they snubbed Machine Gun, then that is all the proof needed that Radio 1 has ceased to provide the service it was set up for 41 years ago.

Maybe, it'll give me a good reason to vote Conservative at the next election, because of David Cameron's promise to consider privatising Radio 1 because it does not provide "a unique service" in comparison to Commercial networks, and certainly unlike Radio 2, 3, 4, Five Live & BBC6MUSIC whom still seem to have USPs.

It's a beautiful and amazing song, I'm not quite sure I'd say it's my favourite song on the album but the album is perfect... and easily the best album of the year so far.

A great choice. I'm still in awe at how totally classic an album Portishead have delivered.

I'd definitely say Third is the best album since...oo..... Alison Moyet's 'Hometime' or Goldfrapp's 'Felt Mountain' (strange that they all feature the same musicians  ).

I think, though, that a more commercial choice was needed for this single after the aural assault that was Machine Gun (has there ever been a single so deliberately non-commercial, or that heralds such a remarkable u-turn for a band?). I think the drippingly beautiful Hunter would've been a terrific choice, or maybe Silence? Saying that, though, The Rip is an obvious highlight - it's just... yes, I'm speechless, too (for once) - it's otherworldly in its gorgeousness.....

The Rip is a fabulous track...... and whilst Radio One DJs will probably be scratching their stupid little heads over it, I'm sure genuine, bona fide music fans (ie...not Radio One DJs or anyone who would ever care to listen to the Godawful station) will adore it.

And I don't think even privatising Radio One would be enough to make me vote for David Cameron :P

I love We Carry On musically... but it sounds a little obvious that they've given Beth the song after it's finished to add the lyrics.... she does a bit too much breaking up words on it for my liking...a la Dame Elton's 'Sac-er-ri-fice', just to make them fit the music.

It's a genius track, though.

One thing with The Rip... Portishead have only ever made one decent promo video - the stunning Only You, directed by Chris Cunningham (which is possibly my favourite ever pop video)...... but The Rip adds to their catalogue of pretty dismal videos - it doesn't match the song at all, does it?

I can agree with this unfortunately. :( 'Only You' has a truly magnificent video. It's also my second favourite track of theirs behind 'Roads'.

The video is ace imo. It took me into some crazy head space :o
"The Rip" is a truly fukkin' AWESOME tune.... There really is no other way to describe it.... Fukk Radio 1, they are set of insufferable, blinkered w/ankers who have little clue about music.. I honestly cant help but to utter a contemptuous snort whenever I'm subjected to that fukkin' GODAWFUL cinema propaganda advert of theirs with all these t/ossers going on about "oh, there's just SOOOOOOOO much amazing music out there..." Well yes, there is, but YOU CLUELESS C/UNTS HARDLY FUKKING PLAY ANY OF IT!!!!!!!

Argh, the video 'is no longer avaliable' :(

The Rip would probably be my fave from Third - its is most like their previous albums, and probably the most commercial track from the album (although clearly not commercial for some - R1 for instance).

My favourite track from the album

and talking about Chris Cunningham - thought after Rubber Johnny he was gonna bring out a really twisted full length movie - but i havent seen anything.

if it's anything like Rubber Johnny.... I'm not sure I could take it. Deeply disturbing stuff. The guy's a genius, though.

Yeah its an annoying advert esp as it seems to go on and on even longer than a Bollywood film!!!! Even the 'introduction' by Zane takes up about 25% of the footage and then its just a load of Ali G charactures (Westwood, Friction) and nebbish trendies going on and on and on....

....tho tbh not as annoying as the shorter Radio 2 ads with Brand and Evens playing random instruments.
did anyone catch them at coachella? my first time ever seeing them and i thought it was amazing
