My favourite BeeGees song. In the days when Robin (undoubtedly the best singer of the group - and imo one of the best voices ever) used to handle leads.

Norma

for me the beegees were a group of 2 (or more) identities.

i rated highly their 60's material, songs like 'too love somebody' are classic all time great love songs, brilliant lyrics.

conversely i couldnt abide their 'night fever' phase, they became 'medalion men' with open necked shirts, 'girls' hair, awful falsetto vocals....

but i cannot deny their appeal or success.... fair play..

The Bee Gees were a brilliant guilty pleasure.

I remember back in the late 1980s/early 1990s when Nicky Campbell was a Radio 1 DJ, and every now & then he'd do theme nights including the ABC of Uncool music, where he played an Abba record, followed by a Bee Gees record, followed by a Carpenters record = Fantastic stuff.

The Brothers Gibb are/were (RIP Maurice) unquestionably quality singer/songwriters for over three decades, as so many of their songs are so well constructed it is easy to see why so many of their songs have been recorded & covered by other artists.

From a family point of view, I admire the way that they called it a day after the untimely death of Maurice with little fanfare. Especially as their last big hit single was the back to their 1960s roots sounding This Is Where I Came In which in retrospect is as eerie a title as Led Zeppelin's final album before the death of John Bonham & their subsequent disbandment "In Through The Out Door".

But with the return of the best boyband of all-time, Take That have picked up the baton of top quality songwriting/production/vocal harmonies with their unexpectedly brilliant mature sounding pop comeback album Beautiful World to keep the musical spirit of the BeeGees alive & well.

As for my favourite BeeGees song, forget the image they had at the time and just listen to this unsurpassed composition.....

Actually this was not the group, it was Robin solo after they split for 2 years. Robin also had a minor hit with his follow-up August October.

I'm fully in tune with you here. Rob - i didn't like their disco phase either.

I have been known to listen to them from time to time, shhhhhhhhhhhhhh don't tell anyone

I do like their stuff from the 60's and some of their 70's stuff.

I prefer their earlier stuff, but, heck, i can listen to the Bee Gees disco tracks too
I can listen every Bee Gees song, no matter whether it is their earlier stuff or not, but it always catch me    I enjoy their voices a lot  :cheer:
  • 2 years later...

I used to think they were naff with a capital N

but got to admit now that they are brilliant.

In fact Robin said that they are up with the Beatles in radio play worldwide

they are about equal, which says a lot for the songwriting of the Gibb brothers.

( must be some nice royalties rolling in too ! )

Tragic for the family that they have lost two of the four Gibb brothers, so young,

but life goes on and Ive heard that Barry and Robin have been in the studios again

but have they yet performed anywhere as a duo ? have nt seen anything .

Lot of TV about the Bee Gees on UK TV tonight Easter Sunday.

Interesting it was Eric Clapton who advised them to go to America and try writing there

with a new vibe.

They took his advice and a whole new career opened up for them as they became

the Disco Kings.

Also interesting they talked of composing songs, they would get together,

work out the melody and do the lyrics next day .... !

so with the Bee Gees the melody came first !
