she may have had a point, to a certain extent, but she was totally over the top. She later admitted that many of the programmes she complained about she hadn't actually seen but rather was responding to people who contacted her organisation.

She complained several times about the level of violence in Doctor Who and after one particular episode in 1976 she complained very bitterly about a particular scene at the end of the programme which led to the Director General having to issue an apology and the offending scene (the end of part 3 of The Deadly Assassin) was cut the following week and removed from the master tape, meaning the BBC no longer holds a complete episode.

she was a right royal pain in the arse - a God-squad Thatcher for the airwaves.

Vile old fascist.

Julie Walters was terrific in the role tonight, though - what an actress she is.

I can't believe I bloody well missed this. And after the BBC had kindly moved The Apprentice to accommodate me! I'm hoping its going to be repeated on BBC 3 or 4 pretty soon!

Julie Walters is the best. I love everything she's done, and I don't want to trivialise her talents - but nothing surpasses the 'Two Soups' sketch she did in the Victoria Wood show.

hmm....

im not so sure, basically i was disappointed, i know it was a drama based on mary whitehouse but i think they took too many liberties. i think id sooner see a proper documentary on her.

I was out tonight, so I'll be looking for it being repeated.

If nothing else because I really like Julie Walters thespian abilities.

Some call her a killjoy because just about everything offended her. But I wonder if she just got a kick out of watching all that smutty stuff :naughty:

With the progs that she was targeting - absolutely not, and Russ is right about her in general...

BUT in saying that, I do think that something should be said about the highly questionable morals and values which are being espoused in the likes of Big Brother and certain other "Reality TV" shows.... There is just something nasty about them....

Julie Walters' performance made me warm to Mary Whitehouse, which I didn't think would ever happen. I thought it was an excellent programme

The clip in question featured "doctor who ... drowning" (her words spoken in 30 years of doctor who documentary),

it does still exist and was released on video in the 90s, it seemed pretty much complete to me.

I watched the programme earlier, (recorded), and i thought it was very good.

Julie Walters was excellent in the role, she is a great actress.

I think Mary Whitehouse would turn in her grave if she saw the state of tv now

with all this reality tv shows pushing the limits.

no doubt about it... after she died it got alot worse with the 'f' word and even the 'c' word being used. its debateable wether or not its needed..... reality or standards?...

Frankly, I dont care about the bad language, that's just part of everyday life, like it or not mate.. I didn't learn swear words off the telly, I learned them off the older kids at school and from my Granny....  She really didn't give a sh!t.....

Also sex and violence within drama or film, so long as its contextualised within the storyline I don't have a problem with either....

"Reality" shows on the other hand, which just titilate and sensationalise for its own sake are another matter.. They present extreme, unrealistic situations as the norm.... Even a bunch of drunken students in Halls of Residence dont act in quite the same manner as the freakshow on Big Brother.....

i did.... viewing 'till death us do part' taught me many naughty words, especially racist ones.

im not sure if there IS any need to show sex, i much prefer the 'after' scenes, you know its gone on but it simply wasnt necessary to show it.

but this topics turning into a 'perspectives' topic.. so ill move it.

I dont recall Alf Garnett ever saying "fukk" or "c/unt" mate....

As for sex scenes, I think you're being a tad prudish here mate.. It's not as if it's porn, it's not as if they're "doing it" for real.. It's acting dear boy.... :smoke:

I think gratuitous sex, or gratuitous bare flesh a la rap videos or c**p like Eric Prydz's rancid 'Call On Me' almost gaenacological video.... it grates on me.

But.... when a film is about sex... then of course sex should be shown as it is. The one thing that comes to mind here is a movie not a TV show, Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, a film wholly about a sexual relationship.... but starring 2 of the most sexless people on the planet - Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise...a film that, in my eyes, tainted the legacy of the late, great Stanley Kubrick because it was so dismally awful. Whilst it's a movie about sexual relations... it fails at every turn to actually show any eroticism whatsoever. What a dud that movie was... shame on all involved - especially Kubrick as it was his final ever movie

When sex is 'done' right.... and it's essential to the storyline..... you can't beat it :yahoo: I'm thinking of Julie Christie and Donal Sutherland's incredible performances in Roeg's 'Don't Look Now' and that sex scene - probably cinema's most amazing sex scene.... although you don't really see any naughty bits. It's beautifully shot, with glimpses and flashbacks edited in, and it kind of flows - makes you feel like a voyeur, almost. Anyway, ahem.... :o .

I think Mary Whitehouse was a prime example of a pent-up old bag who inbetween steaming at the ears over the heinous gays and the declining morals of the UK, was desperate for some good, hard, solid poking action.

Yeah, that would be what I would file under "Contextless Smut For The Sake Of It"....

Good point about "Eyes Wide Shut", an almost entirely UN-sexy film about Sex....

i couldnt agree more :)

those music vids should be censored, theres utterly no need for soft porn in music vids.

I hate to be the pro-ponent of censorship, but in the case of music videos, where there is no real context, I have to agree... Especially seeing as how so many of these sorts of vids end up on YouTube where there are little or no controls over who can view them....
