NONSUCH NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT:

Nonsuch has decided to get rid of its entire judging panel. As a result it has got an entirely new judging panel of musicians and industry types who are no longer on Planet Earth:

Head Judge:

"Saint" John Peel

and

Ray Charles

The downside of having this music committee from Heaven FM is that they have fantastic taste in music :D , but are absolutely useless as deciding what music would do well or not in the contest because they are not of this planet ...... :(

..... so I need your help and your opinions about the songs I'm considering for Nonsuch XIX that I will post in the next post:

The songs I'm considering are from a variety of sources:

1. Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine

Title track of her third album, this quirky chamber pop effort strides the missing link between Regina Spektor and Joanna Newsom IMHO. This interesting video effort was put together by Fiona herself as a Christmas 2006 treat for her website, and I think it sells the song brilliantly. But does it have BJSC potential or is it too WTF for some members tastes?

2. Ville Valle ft Natalia Avelon - Summer Wine

The lead singer of Finnish rockers HIM teams up with the Polish equivalent of Anna Friel to cover the 1966 Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazlewood USA#2 panoramic epic and score a major hit single across Europe in 2007. Hell, at least it is better than that poor Bono/The Corrs cover a few years back. But is it BJSC friendly or not?

3. Saint Etienne - He's On The Phone

One of the greatest pop/dance records ever made. It never gets played by Radio/Video channels, so is it worth (re)introducing this 1995 UK Top 15 hit into the contest? Famously, this was Brian Higgins (Xenomania's) first ever Top 40 hit, and in my opinion only Girls Aloud's Biology has bettered it since. But the last Xenomania track that was entered (Pet Shop Boys - Love etc) DNQ'd. Could this do the same or not?

4. Rose Elinor Dougall & The Distractions - Start/Stop/Synchro

My current Personal Chart #1, so it goes without saying that I love it. This track is made by the former Pipette with the former members of the folk act La Roux before the two core members jumped on the Electropop 2.0 bandwagon. Could this be a real BJSC contender or is it too indie/folk sounding. And could there be one of those ridiculous backlashes for sending a member of a girlpop trio who finished second in the contest, with members who used to belong to an act who have gone onto to great BJSC success since splittting.

5. Cassius - Youth Speed Trouble Cigarettes

The fantastic forthcoming new single by the French dance outfit. Probably too good out there for the Radio 1 playlist. But is it BJSC friendly enough.

1 Fiona Apple I love, everything she touches turns to gold for me, a very good option

2 Ville Valle hmmm..... I'm on the fence, on first listen it goes nowhere, I need to have a few more listens. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets DNQed in the semis

3 Saint Etienne I love that song, I've contemplated myself in using it in the past, but I thought it be too risky for a competition like this

4. Rose, on first listen its quite a haunting track, which I quite like and could do well in the semis with the right countries behind it

5 Cassis, its a no no from me, I don't like anything by Cassius

Best option Fiona Apple, if I have to go out on a limb Rose edges it for me, its different, another thing there is so many good tracks in BJSC19 already, it be hard to choose my final 10.

oh sod it

my entry, see siggie, you can comment in my national thread. :P

I think my favourite is definitely Fiona Apple, her voice is really similar to Sara Bareillies, who has one of my favourite voices in accent/tone. The thing is, you certainly get a Christmas vibe from the music side of things.

I reckon your current #1 has the best chance in this contest but on a personal level Fiona Apple interests me the most.

The songs I'm considering are from a variety of sources:

3. Saint Etienne - He's On The Phone

He's On The Phone is FANTASTIC, but I don't think it would do much unfortunately :( #4 is a fantastic track, but I've researched and I can't find ANYTHING on Elly or Ben being in Rose & The Distractions, so you won't get a backlash there :P And I don't think after 15 contests anyone will care that she used to be in The Pipettes...I'd go with #4! :o

It was nominated for best alternative album, best Pop Vocal Album, and this track was nominated for best pop vocal performance. After Nonsuch's first ever DNQ with my favourite song to date that I have entered in the contest, I have gone back to the basics and used the artist I first thought about using in the first ever contest I took part in, and on a number of occasions since.

So here is the live performance of my entry the opening track of Pip Brown's debut album:

Ladyhawke: Magic (LIVE 2009)

Some of you may not have seen this alternative video of this former UK#78 smash hit. How many of the people in the video do you know? :kink:

Ladyhawke [and friends] - Dusk Till Dawn

Plus here is one of her most well known songs sung in French:

Ladyhawke - Paris S'enflamme

Nonsuch XXII:

With the year coming to an end I always like to look forward to the next year, so remembering Nonsuch's only victory came from a demo by an act who had a forthcoming album coming out the following year Nonsuch are proud to enter ....... oh drat and double drat

As the decade is coming to an end Nonsuch is proud to enter it's all time favourite song of the decade that was never a single. This lush ballad was taken from Jersey born singer/songwriter Nerina Pallot's second album Fires released initially in 2005, and then in remixed form in 2006.

Although I very nearly sent this live version

Nerina Pallot - Idaho

So time to get Nonsuch back to the business end of the BJSC and to return as a force worth noting in 2010, we are proud to announce that the representative in BJSC 23 (none on that Roman numeral bolloxs) is a track from a movie soundtrack that has no single release date planned produced by Xenomania but sampling David Bowie's 1977 Low instrumental track A New Career In A New Town .......

Sarah Harding - Too Bad

Been listening to this on repeat for a while now... great song! Cheryl who?

After the flop performance of Sarah Harding. Nondsuch returns with an entry it was quite happy to gobble up at the nomination stage and even more happy that Mute records have not spotted to remove on Youtube!

I honestly think this is the best piece of music I have heard so far in 2010 (but that may change when I get my hands on the new Marina & The Diamonds & Joanna Newsom albums), so I await you all telling me I've made a big mistake with my selection and that I should have entered the Pipettes with their new early-1980s new wave sounding material instead.

Nonsuch BJSC 24: Goldfrapp - Believer
