It's a nice idea in principle but completely ridiculous in the real world...

Pretty much sums it all up. I can see WHY people would want it to work. I can't imagine sharing a Tube carriage with a gang of pissheads would be much fun, and I've heard of/seen ugly incidents on trains where alcohol has been involved.

But I don't see how this rule could be enforced unless they had a guard stationed every few feet in the stations, and then one in each carriage of every train. And bag searches at the entrances.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd be surprised if this rule worked.

No, it really isn't fun... Especially when you're talking about a bunch of Footie "fans" on a Saturday night.... People who act like this are basically just scum and they've royally fukked it up for those of us who CAN have an enjoyable social drink on the tube with mates without feeling it necessary to act like a total w/anker... I came from a city which banned drinking on the streets, at the time I thought it was draconian, but living in London for six years and seeing how people act has made me change my mind, and I would fully support a drinking ban on the streets of London if the Mayor were to propose it.... People acting the way that they have on the tubes just proves that a drink ban is necessary...

I mean, smokers cant even light up in pubs or clubs anymore, so why should a bunch of morons be allowed to binge drink on the streets and cause havoc...? I think that binge drinking is far more of a social problem than smoking is, I've never heard of anyone being beaten up by a gang of "binge smokers".....

But that's still a huge MINORITY, as it has always it has been hyped up as ten times worse by the media, yeah of course you see a few incidents yourself but it isn't half as bad as its made out to be and have you noticed that most of these people that complain about 'binge drinking' etc. in general are people who NEVER GO OUT like my dad for example says that town centres are are a 'menace on Friday and Saturday nights' maybe if he bothered to pick me up sometimes when he could then maybe he could actually see it and then maybe he could make a point  Not everyone gets aggressive when they're drunk and not everyone has 12 pints every night, some of us just like to have fun and most people who complain are 'binge eaters' who never go outdoors, funny that.

Its unfortunate this event happened but still I don't see how this ban is going to be enforced myself. As someone who sometimes goes out to pubs and clubs in London I'll certainly keep my on this one. I'm alarmed at the treatment that young people are getting these days, you just get treated like a criminal, get followed by police for no reason, get storked around supermarkets just because you happen to wear a hoodie <_< Anyway I'm getting off the subject a bit too much so I'll end it there.

Well I'm with you up for the first paragraph.

I disagree that smoking isn't as bad a social problem. No, smokers don't go beating people up, but the longer term effects of passive smoking...well all I'm going to say is I don't agree with people having to suffer because of the bad choices of OTHERS.

Sorry, Wicky, but you frankly have NO idea what you're talking about.... You probably don't live in a big city like London or Manchester, so you probably dont see the problems binge drinking can really create beyond a few neds getting a bit lairy and loud.... Trust me, in London, the problem is SIGNIFICANTLY worse, the scale of what happened that night on the tubes is pretty unreal and it is NOTHING like you will have experienced. At all. When I go back home to Dundee, it's honestly a non-existant problem in comparison (and Dundee has a rep in Scotland for being a "bit rough" LOL), mainly because Dundee is, ooooh, roughly about 5 per cent of the size... And this is a London-specific issue anyway, so broadening it out to what goes on in your particular neck of the woods is really totally irrelevant to what the thread's about.... Sorry to be blunt...

I do go our fairly regularly, I see sh!t happen, I see how people act.... I see it now that I'm older a lot more than I did when I was your age....

Frankly, I think the effects of Passive Smoking are somewhat exaggerated... You;d have to be around a large group of smokers constantly for any real effects to take place.... Constantly means beyond Saturday nights down the pub with mates by the way, it means, literally hours at a time, every day..... Compare to aggressive, binge-drinking chavs... You only have to catch their eye in order for an incident to potentially occur...... -_-
