April 23, 201114 yr What about Futurama? :D Friends is TERRIBLE. :puke: [/unpopularopinion] This is a lie.
April 23, 201114 yr Friends is TERRIBLE. :puke: [/unpopularopinion] I'm glad I'm not the only one, I've never laughed once when watching it. I can't even see why people would, it's all so unfunny and obvious.
April 23, 201114 yr I'm glad I'm not the only one, I've never laughed once when watching it. I can't even see why people would, it's all so unfunny and obvious. And it's got the stupid laugh track which only makes it even more unfunny. HATE a laugh track, especially when they use it every 5 seconds. Edited April 23, 201114 yr by Bray
April 23, 201114 yr I'm glad I'm not the only one, I've never laughed once when watching it. I can't even see why people would, it's all so unfunny and obvious. Friends was so popular because it had a huge heart and some formidable acting talent, and unlike other US sitcoms it carried story arcs over entire seasons so as to allow you to invest into the characters properly. I can't understand how anybody could possibly 'not laugh once' - come on now. Even if the writing wasn't your cup of tea the likes of Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow and Jennifer Aniston had sublime comic timing.

Well in my defence I have only watched a handful of episodes and none of them did anything for me so I wouldn't know about continual story arcs or investing in characters. Perhaps that is true and I'm missing out, but I wouldn't say they had sublime coming timing either, good timing perhaps, but when the material they are delivering is poor that doesn't much matter.

I suppose it depends on what you've seen. If the handful of eps you're familiar with were from seasons 9 or 10 (or arguably 6 and 7) then I can get that it might have seemed overly-obvious. Season 8 was widely considered a pretty huge return to form and then season 9 dropped right off again and it didn't really recover properly (although I do think the series finale was incredibly beautiful). Seasons 1-5 and 8 really were brilliant though and as much as the main cast were great, some of the guest stars were a really natural fit. Tom Selleck as Monica's much older boyfriend Richard was particularly funny and then you've got the likes of Chandler's hysterical on-off girlfriend Janice who went on to become legendary on account of popping up for one or two episodes a season at inopportune moments. I think if you watched it from the start when it was basically much more grounded in realism then you'd grow to love it and by the time you got to the latter seasons you wouldn't mind the decline too much because you'd be so invested (which I think also could describe your relationship with DH John!).
April 23, 201114 yr Friends is terrible. American Dad is brilliant. Roger is genius. Family Guy and The Simpsons haven't been funny in years. etc.
April 23, 201114 yr I've only ever laughed occasionally at quirky Phoebe moments, it's just criminally overrated. I remember watching that episode where Joey is trying to learn French and I wanted to die. Awful awful stuff.

I think most of what I've seen is from the early seasons, it certainly looks like it is from their clothes. I've obviously seen the one with Kathleen Turner in and I quite enjoyed it, but mainly because of her. I'm not sure I'll ever really GET it, however much I might try, but I guess you never can say never. It wouyld describe my relationship with DH perfectly, except it has one AMAZING character (or at least did before they whored her out) and a series of great characters, something I cannot say for Friends.
April 23, 201114 yr That's the single worst episode of Friends ever made in all fairness. And I'm pretty sure it was part of the terminal season nine decline so I cut it a little slack. What show is still in its prime after that many years anyway? It's really not a great way to judge one of the all-time biggest juggernauts of US television. I guess I just think it takes a certain kind of soullessness not to be warmed by Friends but then I grew up with it so I suppose that's it.
April 23, 201114 yr For me, with these shows it goes South Park>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Family Guy>>>>>>>>The Simpsons>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>American Dad>>>>Futurama

I don't particularly get it with Season 8... I preferred 7, which had several really good episodes. The whole Joey/Rachel storyline wasn't great and plagued the start of Season 10 which pixked up rapidly from the Thanksgiving episode onwards. Season 9 was meh, some very funny moments including the whole "Baby Got Back" scenario. Oh, and the one in Season 4 (or was it late in Season 3?) where the guys win the apartment is the greatest episode ever. I can quote virtually the whole thing.
April 23, 201114 yr Friends have had some great episodes, some were a bit filler-ish, but every comedy has them- but the Joey/Rachel storyline was awful, it was Rachel and Ross that were the couple everyone rooted for and that storyline was pointless, that really put me off it for a while- the season finale was great though, very sad
April 23, 201114 yr I don't know if I could say what my favourite episode ever was... there are several contenders. The ones with the lottery ticket, Rachel's going-away party (which always make me cry), the football match, Rachel giving birth, the last episode, the one where Chandler's flatmate Eddie won't move out, every episode to ever feature a flashback to Ross, Chandler, Rachel and Monica's high school years... the sight of Courtney Cox (pre-new face) in a fat suit and Jen with a prosthetic concorde nose really is too much.

All those, plus the one with the blackout.
April 24, 201114 yr Futurama is great but got worse with the last 2 seasons. AD! however isn't even near the point of decline. <3
April 24, 201114 yr Both Family Guy and The Simpsons are far beyond their peak now. South Park is still amazing though.
