The main reason for the current rise in inflation is the cost of petrol, other things like stealth taxes and the credit crunch have also badly hit household income BUT big wage increases will make inflation and the general economic outlook even WORSE and affect EVERYONE because it will fuel inflation so instead of demanding big wage increases people should just tighten their belts financially and grit their teeth and accept a lower standard of living and live within their means until the economic outlook improves, demanding more money will simply make the whole situation worse because it will fuel inflation and lead to more and more job losses as companies absorb the cost of these wage increases

People should forget about large pay rises and just cut their lifestyles back for a while

People should forget about large pay rises and just cut their lifestyles back for a while

Er, most people have been doing that for a while now.... And not really through choice, but by virtue of the fact that their wages have become increasingly devalued over the past five years or so....

And it's all very well to say that, but when you see the people who are supposed to LEAD BY EXAMPLE doing the exact opposite.... Well, no wonder that people get a bit fed up....

It should apply to all people, workers, bosses, politicians and so on

But seeing MP's with their noses in the trough or bankers awarding themselves multi million bonuses while frustrating doesn't give anyone a god given right to demand more money

And you still dont address the issue that this bout of High Inflation aint being fuelled by "high" wage increases... I mean, what high wage increases....? They've been consistently BELOW inflation for a good many years now for many workers, the majority I'd say..... The recent strike amongst fuel tanker drivers was over the fact that they're worse off NOW as far as wages go than they were in 1992.... I mean, WTF????? And dont even get me started on the way rank and file Police officers and Firemen have been treated....

So, come on, answer the question - What has fuelled the current level of Inflation....? Cos it aint wages mate, they've been BELOW the rate of inflation for years, so stop spouting BS.....

People are fed up now, and rightly so, there's only so much that people should be expected to tolerate.. They presumed that "things could only get better" when Nu Labor were elected in '97... Well, they haven't... Ordinary workers are worse off now in 2008 than they were a decade ago.... FACT!!!

craigs said it.... oil prices have been the main reason inflation is growing, and theres fukk all we can do about that.

id like to see YOU run a small business and try to juggle the books so everyones happy... charge your customers enough to keep them, pay wages that your business can afford, and leave enough for your business to invest.

banging up wages WILL NOT WORK. it didnt work in the 70's and it wont work now. its a bloody simple equasion... if one set of workers get a huge payrise (above inflation) then everyone will want one. the costs are put back onto the customers so we are back to square one.

ok fat cats shouldnt be exempt from below inflation payrises... but its somewhat of a red herring. 1 boss giving himself 10% is nothing compared to giving 100 peope 5%...

and why do you think wages are so low anyway?... because THERES A FUKKIN SURPLUS LABOUR due to over a million eastern europeans coming here!

and DONT stick up for tanker drivers..... the basic wage is £31k !!!! thats a fukkin fortune just for driving a tanker.... thats obscene when theres nurses, firemen, etc ... skilled, valued public workers on much less. now £31k AINT bloody poverty !!! 92 levels my arse.

Doesn't mean that they should just sit back and accept being bloody shafted either..... -_-

I reckon that driving a truck with a HUGE great tanker of petrol attached to it is potentially incredibly hazardous.... You need to be a pretty skilled driver to do that, they do put their lives at risk for their job and probs have to pay pretty high insurance premiums I would imagine.... Tube drivers are p!ss-takers though, nowt difficult about that job, push a lever, pull a lever, they certainly dont earn their money......

What's "dangerous" about City fat cats and MPs jobs then....? They dont earn their money either.... City stockbrokers "steal" it by manipulating shares markets and MPs are putting in totally exaggerated "expenses" claims and creaming off millions of taxpayers money for themselves to feather their own nests, and fukk the rest of us....

It's the principle in any case.... The facts are that when Shell contracted out the work, the tanker drivers saw their pay become devalued, whether it's 31K or not NOW is irrelevant.... If they'd stuck with Shell they'd be earning more than that...

If bosses and MPs were seen to be "tightening their belts" as well, then maybe there wouldn't be such a huge wave of discontent.... The fact that they say one thing and do another is what's causing the resentment.....

And frankly, I think the whole "economy" is just a huge lie anyway.... It's designed to favour the rich and keep the poor down.... Tyler Durden had the right idea (read the novel "Fight Club") if you ask me.....

blah de blah de blah... you know full well that the only reason them tanker drivers are on such an inflated wage is that they hold the rich companies to ransom ..... pay up or else <_< , and whilst i dont deny that they need to be skilled drivers, it aint fukkin rocket science! and is no more dangerous or responsible then bus drivers and no where near the depth of skill nurses need.

why go on and on about 'fat cats'?... WE AGREED ON THAT FROM DAY 1.

Well if Tesco's do it then all the other supermarkets have to do it and Mr Patel's Mini Mart has to do it to prevent staff from leaving to work for Tescos and then other High St retailers have to do it both big and small in order to retain staff from jumping ship to Tescos and so on, a snowball effect is created which while a few of the big boys can sustain the family owned or small businesses in the High St can't

i'm sorry but that is bollocks.

Tesco pay a good £1 more than the rest of the 'big 4' and Lidl and Aldi both pay over £7/hr. yet nobody is queueing to work for them and the rest of the high street are minimum wage or slightly above
