Posted July 9, 200817 yr Okay, now i'm a Liverpool fan so of course my opinions are going to be biased in a way towards Liverpool, but i'd like to know what other people think about the whole situation. Personally I think it's stupid. Okay, somehow the original bid leaked and yes, maybe Liverpool undervalued Barry, but that's how you negotiate, especially when we're apparently "skint". Now if i'm right, it was MON that came out and said all this stuff about Liverpool towards the media, and then this has subsequently portrayed Liverpool in a very bad way. All the blogs and stuff i've read about the issue, are mostly all on Villa's side. I just think martin O'Neill is a total hypocrite... he sits about in Austria being a pundit for the BBC for 3 weeks and goes about discussing the Barry issue live on TV, and then complains about Liverpool "leaking" the bid. Absolute hypocrite. And then to top things off, he tells Liverpool his valuation of Steve Finnan, yet Liverpool get slated for their valuations of Barry. In a kind of way, I hope Liverpool pull out the deal and leave Aston Villa with an unhappy player, because personally I don't think Barry is worth £17m AND Finnan all because he's English and captained England against Trinidad and Tobago for all of 30 minutes. It's obvious he wants to go to Liverpool, and most clubs would let their players leave, as there is no point having an unhappy player at the club... end of the day no player is bigger than the club. I used to really like Martin O'Neill, but i've lost all the respect I had for him over this issue.

Who on the planet of football thinks Gareth Barry is worth more than Frank Lampard & Deco combined. MON is "Having a laugh, ain't he". I totally agree Liverpool should pull out of buying him, until the following season and hopefully get him at a less ludicrous price.
July 9, 200817 yr Deco and Lampard could have both left for nothing on Bosman's at the end of next season so can't compare that with Barry who has ages left on his contract I admire Villa's attitude, the so called "Big 4" think they can just walk in and buy anyone they want and expect the other club to roll over and tickle their tummies Utd have tried it for nearly 2 years too with Berbatov

I'm not sure whether he's handed in a transfer reuqest (and maybe that's the very first thing he should have done), but in a way he's been held to ransom by his manager. Contracts mean nothing these days either really, just look at Alonso, Ronaldo etc. - they all signed long contract extensions a year ago, but now it looks like they want out of the club. I really do think Liverpool under-valued Barry to begin with, and yeah I know that's wrong, but the thing that's got me so annoyed with the whole situation is MON has gone on camera (several times also) and said Liverpool have have under-valued Barry, yet now he's gone and done the EXACT same thing with Finnan. Talk about an absolute hypocrite. MON is just utterly stupid imo. If he doesn't accept Liverpool's last offer than I know full well Liverpool will just walk away from the offer. They've done it before with Simao and Alves, and I daren't say they won't do it again with Barry, and then Villa will be left with an unhappy player and barely enough players to even string a first team squad of 18 players together.
July 9, 200817 yr I don't think Barry is worth as much as they want, but I'm sure MON has looked at Man Utd signing Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves for more when he's a similar, more versatile and certainly no worse player and seen that if they can go for that much so can Barry! And as for Finnan, I think it's very different. Have Aston Villa actually said they're interested in buying Steve Finnan? Because as far as I can tell Liverpool have offered Finnan, they're wanting to sell whereas Aston Villa don't want to sell Barry, they're being forced to sell Barry. Why would Martin O Neill agree with Liverpools valuation of a player he possibly wouldn't otherwise want?

Yeah it's obvious MON has looked at Hargy and Carrick, but at the same time they were both younger players than Barry and both have a lot of England experience. And I don't think Liverpool have ever offered Finnan too them either. Apparently the first deal Liverpool made was Scott Carson, John Arne Riise and £2m, but MON didn't want Carson, but was interested in Riise, but Riise wanted Champions League football. I'm not sure exactly whether Liverpool have offered Finnan... maybe they have, maybe they haven't. But still, now Liverpool are being held to ransom over Finnan (who Villa apparently value at about £1.25m). I'd just love it if Liverpool tied up the Barry deal, and then went and bought David Villa. MON wouldn't though after Liverpool being "tight" with money for almost 2 months.
July 10, 200817 yr Is this the same Liverpool that reckon Peter Crouch is worth £15 million? (They apparently wanted to buy Keane off Spurs - who they (Tottenham) valued at £20 million - with him and £5 million.) As for the main subject - I don't think Barry's worth £17 million.

Well lets see "He's big, he's red, his feet stick out the bed, Peter Crouch, Peter Crouch.": Peter Crouch is a PROVEN goalscorer at the highest level. His international record for England reads: 28 Appearances 14 goals. His record for Liverpool in ECL & WCC matches is 32 Appearances (18 as Sub) 10 goals. He will forever be loved by Liverpool for scoring the only goal against Man Utd in a FA cup tie, in that season Liverpool went on to pip West Ham in the Final. The ONLY time since WW2 Liverpool FC have defeated their nemesis in that competition. Portsmouth have got an absolute bargain. As David Dickenson would say "Cheap as Chips". Believe me the overwhelming majority of Liverpool fans are sad to see the back of him as he was a great servant to the club. As for Robbie Keane = a great player at the highest club level for nearly a decade. It would be good to see him play for the club he loves & supported as a child wouldn't it?

Benitez has come out and said that he valued Crouch at £15m on purpose, and they never expected to get £15m for him at this present time in the final year of his contract, because there were media reports saying he was going to be going for £7m.
July 12, 200817 yr Author Arsenal are now apparently interested in signing him. I know they need replacements for Flamini (and probably Gilberto too) but I can't see Wenger paying £18m for an Englishman, who isn't exactly the youngest duckling, but we'll see I guess.
July 14, 200817 yr but I can't see Wenger paying £18m for an Englishman I can't see him buying an Englishman full stop.
July 14, 200817 yr Author I can't see him buying an Englishman full stop. Well he bought Walcott.
July 14, 200817 yr Well he bought Walcott. And has Hoyte in his first team squad! With Mark Randall and Jay Simpson coming through
July 14, 200817 yr and "Almunia" can be English too soon  Although I don't particularly think England's short of GK's

July 14, 200817 yr Author If only we had one playing regular football at a big 3 plus Liverpool club :( Well they're all shyte tbh, or need a few more years experience. Robinson is awful, James is alomst past it, Hart needs another couple of years yet, Green just isn't good enough, Carson's not good enough to play for a top team. All of the Top4 clubs all have top goalkeepers at the moment and the only one that's likely to move on within the next couple of years is Van Der Saar and that's only because he'll retire!

And then Ben Foster can come in! :cheer: With Thomas Heaton and Ben Amos being his understudies :yahoo: All three are looking quite good anyway. How did a thread about Gareth Barry turn into a thread on goalkeepers btw?
July 15, 200817 yr To be far Almunia is no better than anyone we have. If he was he'd have been picked for Spain as third choice by now...
