I loved The Mummy, it was a great film. The Mummy Returns wasn't too bad either. But I don't know about this one, because it seems to have taken on a more oriental theme, where as I enjoyed the Egyptian mythological aspects of the first two films. It's a definate shame that Rachel Weisz is not in this one :(

Though I'll probably go see it.

So it's just Brendan Frasier? No female counterpart? :(

The Mummy was an AMAZING film. I loved it when I saw it. However, the second one was just c**p. Hated it. Boring, un-interesting, didn't make sense, redundant. Just plain BLEARGH. This might be good, I don't know.

The first two were brilliant films, the only returning character is John Hannah, to be honest I don't think this is any good, its a bit of a let down.

I don't think this is directed by Stephen Somers, as he did a brilliant job on the first 2, but he did produce it, the script is written by the 2 guys behind Smallville TV Series.

Mario Bello has taken on the Rachel Weis character.

What do you think about Rachel Weisz not returning? Will it effect the film? Discuss all Here :cheer:

Exactly why hasn't Rachel Weisz come back....? The first two films pretty much relied on the interplay between the actors (Fraser, Weisz, Hannah), breaking up a good team isn't a good move IMO when dealing with a franchise.. Frankly, I dont see the point in bringing back the character at all if the original actress aint playing her... Maria Bello....? She's American, 'Evie' was a very quintissentially English character, I honestly cant see Maria Bello being able to put across this sort of quaint "englishness" that Weisz did (yeah, okay, I have a thing for Rachel Weisz, sue me  )... I mean, were Kira Knightley, Helena Bonham Carter or Kate Winslett just too busy or summat....? -_-

This looks pretty naff. It hasn't got the original cast (which will be a huge blow-out), they've left it YEARS to late. They should of scraped the Scorpion King while they could and fully concentrated on a 3rd Mummy movie.

The concept is good I'll give it that, but I doubt I'll be checking it out.

There's no doubt that drafting in Jet Li is a canny move on the part of the producers.. Really, he pretty much IS the only reason for most to even bother with this film, he's an incredibly bankable star.. With the absense of the fragrant Rachel Weisz, my only interest in this film is in seeing Jet Li do his stuff.... Mind you, not sure his part is really gonna be that big...

I agree that it was left too late though.... I never really liked "Scorpion King" very much...

Didn't Rachel Weisz refuse to play the mother of a 21 yr old?

Well, could you really blame her....? For a start, she's only 37.... (and looks about late-20s, she's an absolutely stunning woman...), Luke Ford (the actor who plays Alex) is actually only 10 years YOUNGER than Weisz, biologically, he's 27.... In terms of continuity, as well as basic fukkin' BIOLOGY it's an utter bloody nonsense and a piece of casting on a level of bizarreness to almost match Dick Van Dyke playing a Cockney Chimney sweep in "Mary Poppins". or indeed Richard Gere playing an IRA terrorist in "The Jackal"....

Maria Bello is four years older than Rachel, so biologically it's possible for her to have a 27-year old son, but still pretty ludicrous.... Brendan Fraser is about the same age as Bello.. It's all a ridiculous notion anyway, in The Mummy 2, Alex was something like 7 years old or thereabouts, now all of a sudden, he's jumped 14 bloody years!!!!!!! Ludicrous.... Would it really have killed these idiot scriptwriters just to make the character of Alex a TEENAGER......? And actually cast a TEEN ACTOR......?

No, I really think Rachel Weisz made the right choice in turning this piece of cr@p down.....

In the new Indiana Jones film, Harrison Ford at least actually IS old enough to have a son Shia Leboeuf's age..... In fact, Harrison is old enough to have a GRANDSON Shia's age.... Brendan and Maria....? Come on.....

The one thing is that if Rachel is an actress, should'nt she be able/want to play different ages? I mean they would of probably tried to make her look older but was she just too vain?

OR is that whole story (which has come about from the bitter producer) just made up to shield the fact that she turned it down (after over 3 years of stating on occasions her interest in being involved) because it looked like it was going to be $h!t?

I'm interested to see how it pans out, how the new girl is along with the new boy and the whole new take on the actual mummy.

Oh and i think they're banking on it doing as well as the previous two, which i never realised did SO well, as the new boy and the new Iffy have both signed contracts for another THREE movies!

Well this was exactly how I expected it to be really - decent action film, but as cheesy as hell. Some parts of it are so cheesy I was laughing in my seat, but it's not as bad as it sounds really. Aside from a brief 10 minute period the film kept me entertained throughout really, and it really does have some excellent action sequences, although I think Jet Li was really underused tbh, well, in terms of his action-status - I would have personally like to have seen more of him show off his martial arts skills. I thought the end was a bit of a let down too, really because I was expecting a bit more from the end action sequence to bit into par with the rest of the film, but alas, no. John Hannah is really underused in the film too, but saying that, he doesn't really have much of a point to being in the film really... only to be stupid.

I can't honestly blame her - considering the 21 year old in question looked about 31. And anyway - the Brendan Fraser character looked barely in his 40's. You could forgive stuff like this however if the film was any good. But it wasn't.

Absolutely awful film, I was really dissapointed. I agree with Roo that some parts of it where REALLY cheesy and the whole film just lacked something. It just seemed to be there with no spark or anything. I didn't think much to the acting as well. Poor.
It was pretty awful. I found some of the acting so wooden it was laughable.

Compared to the action sequences in "The Forbidden Kingdom" and what we KNOW the likes of Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh are capable of, the action in this film was utter sh!t..... Absolutely LEADEN fight sequences, LUMPEN dialogue, WOODEN acting... And, sorry, but Maria Bello is just no kind of replacement for Rachel Weisz.. At all.... All the things that made the first two Mummy films fun and exciting seem to have completely disappeared in this trashy, cheap-looking "Threequel"....

I was incredibly amused by the 'recreation' (well, more 'rip off' really) of the "thousands of arrows" sequence from the VASTLY superior Chinese Martial Arts film "Hero" (also a Jet Li film).. Well, I say amused, more disgusted that a great director such as Yimou Zhang was being ripped off so shamelessly by a second-rate Hollywood hack like Rob Cohen....

The CGI looked pretty bog standard as well tbh, the armies of the Undead clashing really should have been spectacular, and in the hands of a more capable director (like, ooooh, I dunno PETER JACKSON or SAM RAIMI perhaps....?), it would have been, instead, it was totally underwhelming stuff, like some out-take from one of the previous films in this franchise.....

"The Dark Knight" and the Lord of the Rings films shows us how great, intelligent blockbuster films SHOULD be... Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is everything that is WRONG with this sort of film.....

This was the biggest heap of ROT I have seen in a long, long time.

The acting was of an okay standard, but the plot was so paper thin, most of the effects were completely unbelievable and unrealistic, and it was mind-numbing boredom throughout.

I'm so glad I didn't pay to see this.

Same here... Unlimited Cineworld cards are a good thing....

On the acting front - the guy who played Alex was awful... Even Hayden Christopher would've been better.... And Maria Bello spent so much time developing her incredibly studied and phonetic English accent, she actually forgot to EMOTE or be in any way expressive with her character.... Brendan Fraser has been a LOT better in other films as well.. So, really that just leaves Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, neither of whom managed to get out of second gear because their characters were so woefully under-written... As for John Hannah.... Well, frankly I almost forgot he was even IN the film, his character was that under-used....

Serious contender for "Worst Film of the Year".... Mind you, it's got some competition - I Am Legend, 10,000BC, Journey to the Centre of the Earth....

....Sex and the City.....   (oooooh, I expect to get flamed for this one.....Bring it on night-nurse..... :P  )
