Posted July 31, 200816 yr For me it has to be this decade as there are very few genres. It's mainly R&B/RAP/Hip Hop Gone seems to be good Pop, Rock, Ballads, Country, Dance, Reggae & Soul which featured in most other decades especially from the 60s to 80s The 90s for me was good for Pop, Dance/Techno (especially that from Europe) and Rock. IMO the best decade was the 60s with is great variety of genres. There were great songs with good lyrics and melody. This is something sadly lacking in 90% of music this decade. There are many people buying and downloding 60s music today. I can't say that many will be obtaining 2000's music in 40 years time (in whatever format is available then). July 31, 200816 yr This all depends if you are talking about chart fodder or about any music that's around. If the former then a decade is too long. I thought 90-93 was great for indie and grunge and 94-97 was Britpop. 97-99 was absolute pants and possibly the worst time for music ever. This continued until about 2002. Even the 80s was the same 80-83 was great. 84-86 was $h!te but then it got better again towards the end of the decade as some really talented dance merchants started producing some fantastic acid and rave records.
July 31, 200816 yr Today's music is simply bland, boring, and just copies of each other... I have to agree. For me it has to be the 00's. As Euro Music says todays mainstream music is mainly R&B / Rap. Although there are some quality tunes out there and have been so far this decade music is just so samish now. I use to love listening to the charts but now i'm not bothered if i do or if i don't as most artists these days have to cover or remix an old tune, so that says it all for me. -_- Edited July 31, 200816 yr by Bucktooth Billy
July 31, 200816 yr i dont think theres any one whole decade where music was c**p.. there have been good 'eras' and bad 'eras' in every decade. and of course alot depends upon your taste.. i couldnt stand the sounds that were around in the late 80's or early 90's, but others (grebo for eg) liked the new sounds. i like alot of modern music (last ten years) , i like uk garage, some r n b, some (but not much) 'pop', dance, and even the recent generic 'indie' . to me the last ten years was better then the previous ten. if pushed, id suggest that the worst consecutive ten years was 87-97.
July 31, 200816 yr I can't stand the majority of music from this decade, with just a few notable exceptions, Whereas I liked loads of artists from 50/60/70/80.......................Although not much from the 90's, but think it was still better than the 2000.
July 31, 200816 yr As far as the charts go then 2000's are an absolute shambles. Every decade has had it's redeeming features, but with only a year and a half to go...the noughties have been almost completely pish. But that's just the charts...there's loads of good music out there, but not the sort that gets played on any commercial media. The silver lining is that the 2010's will be worse. July 31, 200816 yr Can't say it's all been bad, but for me, I voted this current decade as being the worse.
July 31, 200816 yr Ha ha...the most lop-sided poll in the history of Buzzjack? Mind you...this is the retro section!
August 1, 200816 yr 2000's Between the 90's and 00's music in general has gone way down hill. Don't get me wrong there are still some amazing artists of this decade but they are overnumbered 10-1 by pure utter c**p.
August 1, 200816 yr Ha ha...the most lop-sided poll in the history of Buzzjack? Mind you...this is the retro section! couldnt agree more! :) 'current' music has ALWAYS been derided, no matter which decade it was in... ive heard it ALL before.. the very same arguments knocking 'current' ever since the 60's!. older people were always moaning 'it was better in my day'.. i have no doubt that in 30 years time todays youth will be looking back on th 00's as 'the best ever' era... dispite the generic/manufactured music. theres been retro 'revivals' ever since the early 70's when they looked back on rock n roll (hence wizzard, showaddywaddy, rubettes, mud etc). punk revived the basic sounds of the 60's, with many 'inovative groups' like the jam and xtc being called 'generic' and copying/plagarising 60's acts.. so 'generic' music is nothing new, manufactured acts? monkees anyone?...let alone tony burroughs miriad of acts.. id go on to champion the 00's.. pop?.... well girls aloud, sugababes, even kylie (cant get you out of my head), are as good a pop act as theres ever been rock?.... id cite queens of the stoneage as producing rock as good as any retro rock acts inivotive?... cutting new ground will always be difficult with time, but the white stripes (and raconteurs), mars volta, are examples of cutting fresh ground in a saturated market. dance?.... well its gone abit pete tong now ...lol. but earlier in the decade there was plenty of quality dance acts... id cite push as a prime example. even eric prydz new release 'pjanoo' is actually very good! respectable pop?... gorillaz! 'feel good inc' for eg... outcast 'hey ya'.. 2 examples of good all round music. ballads?..... well will young seems to be highly respected (hard for me to comment as i dont like him). manufactured acts?... nothing new, monkees, love affair, tony burroughs, ... ok i like the monkees and love the love affair! lol, but edison lighthouse?.. c'mon, 'love grows where my rosemary goes' is AWFUL! is suggest that blue (oo's) have produced better tracks! black music?.... whilst motown was superb... (it was a manufactured production line though...lol), id suggest that recent r&b ... ashanti, aaliyha, snoop dogg are FAR superior to the stylistics, chi-lites and all that VILE philly slush. guitar pop?... ok well there was 2 types of guitar pop in retroland... inivotive (kinks, beatles etc) and pop guitar pop...lol (tremeloes, hermans hermits). whilst the groundbreakers really cant logistically be touched... they were there when ground was being broken... theres no where really for acts to go now. so logistically guitar groups of today are just repeting past acts. id suggest most strongly that acts like hard-fi, kaisers, razorlight, are producing much better material then hermans hermits, late manfred mann, tremeloes, paper lace , modern romance ... with the aforementioned white stripes still finding new ground to break. so personally i dont regard the 00's as a decade bereft of any decent music! i think its still there and allowing for personal tastes, music hasnt really deteriorated that much since the beatles et al kicked off pop music as we know it in the early 60's. its all going around again, ever since the rock n roll revival of the early/mid 70's. in fact in 67, the monkees were being sold as 'the new beatles', so possibly everything has been re-created ever since the mid 60's!
August 3, 200816 yr if pushed, id suggest that the worst consecutive ten years was 87-97. Hehe, that's probably my favorite consectutive 10 years! :D Hey as they say, if we all liked the same thing... I do also agree it's more a case of era rather than decade. I'm limiting myself to 80s, 90s and 00s as I don't feel qualified to vote for the previous three. I voted for 00s mostly down to the rapid decline in dance music (or great dance music) and the relentless annoying RnB that has spiralled out of control. All this revival 'indie-rock' music hasn't helped either... The best, for me, is the end of 80s/early 90s.
August 3, 200816 yr I like very little from the late 80's onwards, a few exceptions but the fact that around 90% or more of my CD's and downloaded songs are from 1960-1989 says it all
August 3, 200816 yr hmm.....It depends what you mean. If you are talking about mainstream music it has to be '00. All hip hop/rap/r&b domination in the charts. For me this kind of music doesn't bring any emotions plus the lyrics are often so ridiculous and shallow. I can't stand it. It annoys me because it also poisoned classic pop. Now almost every song (especially in USA has this soul/r&b influence) therefore couples years ago I stopped to watch music channels listen to the radio stations and charts. Also It annoys me that nowadys singles have to be at most 3:50 long because radio stations won't play them. In the '70 you could listen songs in the radio and tv which lasted even 7 or 10 minutes. I miss this kind of freedom. Even in the '90 for example Metallica released One (almost 8 min. long). Nowadays it would be impossible. However I think that there is a lot of good music nowadays but it isn't promoted in media. If you want to listen to some interesing stuff you have to search it by yourself in internet for example. Of course there are some exceptions and from time to time there are good songs in commercial world too. ;)
August 3, 200816 yr Watch this poll be run again in ten years time, and all the posters of then saying "Definitely the 2010s, the best era for music was the 2000s and it's gone downhill since then" :P In the 80s everyone thought Stock/Aitken/Waterman was killing music, in the 90s people hated Eurodance and boybands/girlbands...every single decade has lots of classic songs and there'll always be people calling it the worst era ever, and bring back the days of insert-decade-here, etc. It's a terrifying thought that in the future people will be nostalgic for those 'wonderful' days when 'classic' artists like Dizzee Rascal and Kid Rock topped the charts, but it's going to happen!

With the exception of the 1950's (which imo was sh/te) I agree with you! Norma
