Posted August 12, 200816 yr Just seen this on MediaGuardian... Wogan said he did not want to front Eurovision any more following the increase in political voting which saw Russia win in Serbia this year after gaining the votes of former Soviet states. "I was considering giving up before Belgrade and now I have to say I'm very doubtful about ever wanting to do Eurovision again," he added. "I've had so much fun, but I think it's time for someone else to take over." If he does go, the popularity in the Eurovision in the UK is going to absolutely plummet.
August 12, 200816 yr Author And Digital Spy is reporting that he has already quit, despite using the same interview as a source. Terry Wogan has confirmed that he will no longer be presenting the Eurovision Song Contest. The Radio 2 DJ, who has fronted the BBC's coverage for 37 years, said it was "time for someone else to take over". "I was considering giving up before Belgrade, and now I have to say I'm very doubtful about ever wanting to do Eurovision again," Wogan told the Radio Times. In this year's contest, Britain's Andy Abraham only earned 14 points, while the Russian winner Dima Bilan bagged 272. Commenting on the 2008 contest, Wogan said: "Days before the show, I knew Russia would win. The fact is, Putin was getting nasty, which means the former satellite states were always going to vote for Russia in order to keep the oil coming. "It's unfortunate, I suppose, but whereas we have always taken Eurovision with a pinch of salt, the former Eastern Bloc countries are not sufficiently versed in the ways of democracy to realise they are supposed to be voting for a song, not a next-door neighbour."
August 12, 200816 yr f***ing idiot  Yeah, Putin stopped the oil after Natalya Podolskaya flopped didn't he? :manson: Putin probably doesn't give a flying f*** about Eurovision! And how f***ing patronising and arrogant can you get? "It's unfortunate, I suppose, but whereas we have always taken Eurovision with a pinch of salt, the former Eastern Bloc countries are not sufficiently versed in the ways of democracy to realise they are supposed to be voting for a song, not a next-door neighbour." - YEAH, BECAUSE YOU CAN EVEN REMEMBER ANDY ABRAHAM'S THREE MINUTE COMA?

If he's going to come up with such pig-ignorant views such as this, well, maybe he should just fukk off..... The folks in Central and Eastern Europe voted for Dima Bilan because he's a MULTI PLATINUM SELLING ARTIST in that particular territory..... And, er, Andy fukkin' Abraham....?????? Cant even sell his piece of cr@p "tune" on bloody i-tunes in his home country.... ROFLMAO.....
August 12, 200816 yr Good Riddance, in fact he should stop giving hints and just go! I'm sure the British public will get over it eventually. He's too pessimistic about Eurovision and that rubs off on the British public which rubs off on the Irish public and then rubs off on other countries that don't do well.

It ain't rubbin' off on me  I never liked Wogan. I dislike people who try to be funny. It really annoys me. -_-
August 12, 200816 yr Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish :D Made my day, this has! Bye Bye Wogan! I'm quite happy for Eurovision's 'popularity' to fall in the UK. If it did, then we might end up with some people who actually understand the contest voting for our entry's votes being counted , rather than the usual bunch of brainwashed sheep who follow whatever Wogan/Cowell tell them is good music.

You mean the three minute coma that - rather bizarrely - only made two places higher than a song that DIDN'T represent Sweden. And as for "they are supposed to be voting for a song, not a next-door neighbour" - who did 8 of our 14 points this year come from? Ireland, which - last time I saw - was our only land neighbour. That's one theory of his shot down in flames right there.
August 12, 200816 yr And as for "they are supposed to be voting for a song, not a next-door neighbour" - who did 8 of our 14 points this year come from? Ireland, which - last time I saw - was our only land neighbour. That's one theory of his shot down in flames right there. We only got 8 points from Ireland because The X Factor is broadcast there, and our representative appeared on it - Andy's Irish X Factor fans supported him in Eurovision - nothing more. If countries only vote for their neighbours, how come all but 6 countries (that's 37 countries!) gave votes to Russia to win? Last time I looked, Russia doesn't have 37 neighbouring countries. And if people vote for their nearest neighbouring countries, why did only one of ours give us any points, if our song was so good? Where were our points from Belgium? Spain? Germany? Even France?!
August 12, 200816 yr Good riddance to Terry Wogan who was 15 years past his Eurovision sell by date. Please, please please get Paddy O'Connell to take over with Claudia Winkleman. But I bet the BBC press gangs Jonathan Ross or Graham Norton to take over from TW.
August 12, 200816 yr Well i don't think Russia will be on particularily good terms with its neighbours after the war in Georgia. If there is political voting concerning Russia then it will be negative political voting from some former Soviet Bloc countries if the Georgia war escalates to make the rest of the Soviet Bloc feel a bit more pee-ed off without actually being able to do anything about it. And this might happen no matter how good the song is.
August 12, 200816 yr Author We only got 8 points from Ireland because The X Factor is broadcast there, and our representative appeared on it - Andy's Irish X Factor fans supported him in Eurovision - nothing more. Nah, we've had seven or eight points from them in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 as well. The Brits in Ireland are voting for us, and proving that diaspora voting exists even amongst us!
August 12, 200816 yr Just seen this on MediaGuardian... If he does go, the popularity in the Eurovision in the UK is going to absolutely plummet. But atleast the % of people that watch it that understand will be far higher....

August 12, 200816 yr Author I reckon they'll get Jonathan Ross to do it... the guy who does the semi-final commentary on BBC3 is nausiating tbh; in the semi-finals he kept talking over the presenters when they were announcing who'd gone through with random c**p like "where are Sweden? Where are Denmark?" and totally taking away some of the 'tenseness' of the situation. :( They need someone who's experienced enough not to talk over the presenters at key points (Wogan), but also someone who knows why these countries are voting for each other and also, what is a decent song (not Wogan). -_-

The Brits in Ireland are voting for us, and proving that diaspora voting exists even amongst us! 2004 - FAME ACADEMY's James Fox - 8 Points from Ireland 2005 - POPSTARS: The Rivals' Javine - 8 points from Ireland You know what I'm saying ;)
August 12, 200816 yr Author 2004 - FAME ACADEMY's James Fox - 8 Points from Ireland 2005 - POPSTARS: The Rivals' Javine - 8 points from Ireland You know what I'm saying ;) Doesn't explain Daz or Scooch though... And 'Popstars: the Rivals' was on in 2002 wasn't it? I doubt Javine would still be hugely popular in Ireland three years and two 2003 singles later tbh.
August 12, 200816 yr Nothing on this sweet Earth explains Daz or Scooch getting any points from anyone, or even any votes from MYMU  Javeline also had a June 04 single aswell, though ... not that it set the world on fire, I think it got 48/49
August 12, 200816 yr Believe it or not, Javine had some singles over here that were quite successful . She wouldn't be 'well known', but she would still be 'known'. Most of this country also has this weird obsession with c**p music, hence why Javine, Daz and Scooch got some points from us. :P Edited August 12, 200816 yr by Cal
August 13, 200816 yr Nothing on this sweet Earth explains Daz or Scooch getting any points from anyone, or even any votes from MYMU  Except when a country "has problems with their televoting" and uses it's jury, who've done a protest against policital voting and gives their 12 to the United Kingdom, mentioning no names. Malta 2007.
