The Saturdays - 'Up' 'Chasing Lights' [13.10.08] [27.10.08]

Featured Replies

In fairness, as someone who doesn't really care one way or another about The Saturdays, I don't blame her for not knowing that line.

I've seen numerous people know the lines to their own bands songs, because they don't sing that part. If she sings a completely different verse, why would she know someone elses? I remember once Myleene didn't know Kym's lines to Pure and Simple on Buzzcocks. And why would she, if she never sang them, etc?

And as for them writing their own stuff: I'm pretty sure it's obvious they're a manufactured band, and don't write their stuff. I've never been mislead into believing that The Saturdays write their own stuff by them or anyone in their record label or team that they do. Anyone who expects otherwise is dumb.

but that doesnt add up.... firstly, she knew the james brown line from the orevious question, has she ever sung that? phil jupitus isnt a singer but he knows the lyrics as are many of the other guests being drummers, bass players etc... they know the lines, and lastly, she has just been on tour with ga, for the last 6 months just how many times has she performed the track? doesnt she LISTEN ?... so no, i dont accept the 'she didnt sing the line so why should she know it' excuse.

however i will re-itterate a point now lost somewhere.... in her defence, i do think she was onto a no win situation. anstil often choses which answer is the correct one (as many lyrics are the same off different songs). 'you think im crazy'... if she quoted 'if this is love' he would mischeiviously said 'no...gnarles barkley'. this was highlighted with the following 'mama mia' questions... so she was never going to get it right.

I watched Frankie on Never Mind The Buzzcocks... it was fine, she didn't come accross bad at all, she came accross like a teenager would. She was really sweet imo.

if all teenagers are as dumb as she was, this forum wouldnt exist.

Myleene Klass is a classically trained musician probably more into Mozart or Beethoven who perfomed WAY below her capabilities with Hear'Say (a bit like Oscar Wilde or William Blake working for Hello or Nuts magazine really... ), I mean, seriously, how much of her actual heart and soul did she really divest into that piece of sh!t reality show...? I mean, honestly....? It was just a means to an end for her considering what she's doing now, we're supposed to believe that Frankie is a committed Pop Star... And wasn't it the fact that Myleene's appearance on "...Buzzcocks" came long after Hear'Say went belly up....? In other words, the group were not a going concern, and Myleene had certainly moved on....

And do you honestly believe that singers in shows like "Chicago" or "Les Mis" ONLY know their own parts.....? Do they fukk... They know every line of every song, backwards probably; they have to. Because they are professionals.....

Watched the episode last night. One of two cringy moments but it wasnt all that bad. From some peoples comments i was expecting her to have said much worse. She actually came off pretty decently if you ask me.
Urghh why has this thread been taken over by the grumpy granddads? :manson:

OOOOH, so mature, you spend all day thinking up that retort.....? I aint even a FATHER, never mind a Grand-father..... :P

This statement really sums up my whole problem with most of you "Pop" fans.... You dont debate the points and just resort to glib statements such as this.... I can go on an Indie-based AF like Coldplay or Arctic Monkeys, or indeed onto the thread on the Indie Forum concerning The Killers' new track, criticise them a bit, and not have to confront a childish reaction such as this..... Are the Indie Kids just better at debating generally.... I'm beginning to think so.... And I seriously doubt there's much difference in the actual age groups....

Well that just shows how sh!tly written is then doesn't it.

She quite embarrased herself to the honest, fairly nice but she clearly doesnt give a sh!t about the musical side of her career anyway.

Not knowing the lyrics to your own song especially after performing it so frequently is not only embarrasing, but completely ignorant.

Time and time again singers/bands who actually have a passion for music who deserve to do well fail to get anywhere yet the

undeserving idiots always seem to come out on top.

Now i may only be 17 but looking back through the years you would not see such a travesty happening 20 years ago.

This has been a bitterly dissapointing year for music, one of the worst in memory imo.

Pop songs nowadays consist of desperate attempts at trying to sound different, 60s/70s/80s copycats, auto-tuned robots and The Saturdays, all dreadful bar the odd ocassional blip.

I'm still yet to be convinced these are the so called 'new Spice Girls', everything ive heard so far i wouldnt give better than 7/10, pleasant songs

but they really do lack everything from decent melodies, lyrics to general knowledge.

Excellent post.... If only half of your contemporaries on this thread were as intelligent and insightful....

Just to reply to the bolded part.. Kind of begs the question just what the fukk she's even DOING in the Music Industry then dunnit....?

I've avoided this thread for a while, because at the end of the day, I don't care THAT much.

For the record Up is a far more catchier single than their debut. In a strange way it reminds me of the PCD's breakthrough single Don't Cha in so far that I did not like song either but it was manifestly obvious that it was a very catchy tune and was certain to be a very big hit single.

If Up does not go Top 3 then it can only be because the hype has turned so many music fans and potential record buyers against them. To be honest I don't understand why it was not their first release as at least it comes close to matching the ridiculous overhype that their Record Company & PR have given for the band, because that has blown up in their faces amongst media critics (I love Andrew Collins review of the band & their album especially the bit about their record company now begging Girls Aloud to stay together - hilarious & spot on and lamenting the fact that no wonder the British music industry is in a bad way when fantastic "old school" (i.e. the Pre Stock Aitken & Waterman era of acts composing their own original pop music & playing their own musical instruments) pop acts like Ladyhawke & Ladytron get stuck on small independent deals whilst a Record Company spends 8 times as much money than was spent on marketing Amy Winehouse's second album manufacturing this poor man's hybrid of Girls Aloud & the Sugababes) because as Public Enemy once sung "Don't Believe The Hype", and there are few things worse in life than making ridiculous promises and failing to deliver the goods.....

As for the Buzzcock's appearance, well it is hardly the first time a member of a manufactured boyband/girlgroup has appeared on that show and been made to look stupid is it. To those of you who think it was a bad strategy by her Record Company, well just look at the iTunes chart and the fact their debut single climbed back up 40+ places in a day. As the old saying goes there is no such thing as bad publicity.

It matters not one iota if us "know it all been their done it, bought the t-shirt granddads" think they are rubbish, because they are not marketed for us but for a teen or pre-teen audience and if that audience likes it and gobbles it up then job done.

Nah, it's not the first time sure, but when it's happened in the past, the embarrassed pop star just laughed it off as a joke and took it in good grace, not made matters even worse for themselves.....

Besides, let's leave music to one side here, if you wanna talk sales here, I'll just pluck one example out of the air shall I of an "Alternative" or Rock-based band - Evanescence sells 15 million with "Fallen", six million with "Open Door" (and is somehow considered a 'failure' just because the singles dont do well.... ), so combined sales from only TWO albums is over 21 million...... Er, can we see The Saturdays getting anywhere NEAR those figures, in fact can we see The Saturdays even getting to album number two.....?

I have far more tolerance for the likes of Girls Aloud, All Saints and Sugababes, because at least they manage to put a bit of quality into the manufacturedness of it all.... I honestly dont see The Saturdays having a "Never Ever", a "Sound of the Underground" or even a "Wannabe" in them.....

Good post by the way Rich....

Precisely. Again I'll refer back to Rob's 'she should never have gone on the show' comment and say that was obviously a daft thing to say, especially going by the iTunes chart now.

Now Richard, that simply isn't true.....

Gary Glitter, O J Simpson, Mike Tyson.... And to use an example you yourself have used - Sandi Thom..... ;)

That could have happened regardless, nowt to say it had anything to do with "...Buzzcocks".... It often happens when bands release new material, sales of the previous stuff will go up, happens a LOT actually....

When is Up! on iTunes? Is it going to coincide with the physical release?

iTunes Sunday, physical Monday.

even tho the single sound like it would be good as an eurovision entry..it annoys me when it gets into my brain and goes round and round all day...

tho if it think about Deuce - I Need You it goes away!!! hooray for mid 90s pop fail duece!!! musch better and so under-rated

Will 'Up' be available to download from Midnight tonight?

Yup!

And the Wideboys remix!

Gonna buy the physical on Monday too :)

well like her or not... fwankie is going to be in the spotlight for some time with or without the saturdays. destined to follow other airhead 'celebs' , katona, marsh, goodey, ... i wont say cole/tweedy as she does appear to have a brain! lol.

pity... id sooner her slip into obscurity along with her other 'juniors' so that justin lee collins could 'bring back' s club juniors in ten years time!

as for 'up'... we will just have to wait and see how many units it shifts, itll be a hit, top ten... maybe top 5... but im far from convinced they are any good nor will be around very long. (but then again, westlife are !!! :puke2:)
