Posted August 28, 200816 yr what went wrong with E=MC2 :( It seemed like such a promising era but it looks like Mariah is only getting mediocer (sp??) success with it :( Loving You Long Time doesnt seem like its doing too much and need i mention the great Bye Bye? Its really terrible to see such a great album do so badly :(
August 28, 200816 yr I absolutely raved about E=MC2 when it was first released. But with further listening it just doesn't come close to "Mimi". "Mimi" was the comeback. She was written off by pretty much everyone after "Glitter" + "Charmbracelet" She doesn't care as much with this project its quite clear. "Mimi" was the make or break and was clearly thought out as making Mariah a superstar again. It worked. The follow-up sadly as you tried to put has been "Mediocre"
August 28, 200816 yr i love emc² is much better than mimi! migrate, side effects, i stay in love, love story, for the record, bye bye and i wish you well are groundbreaking. the only fault was, top release touch my body as the lead single.. migrate would have also been a no. #1 single and would have had better downloads.. i gues. i think not bye bye messed all up but mariahs marriage and her honeymoons.. she was not doing any promo .. she just came to europe 1 week before the album was out and has since not yet returned to do any promo.. the album sold just because tmb was a HIT in europe peaking in the top 10 of almost every european market.. emc² sold 2,000,000 copies worldwide now, i guess it has potential to sell another 1-1,5 million when the release has a strong single! another thing is, this album is not yet considered a flop.. all the critics until now gave it very good reviews so this era live not in a negative atmosphere.
August 29, 200816 yr ^Oh come on, it's a big flop. Only a second hit single (Bye Bye could be considered a small hit) and a third which flunked and failed to revive flagging album sales. *E=MC2 sold less than 100k in the UK; just a sixth of what TEOM did. *It's sold less than 1.2m in the US; a fifth of TEOM's 6 million sales total, which is a catastrophic decline even when you take into consideration the slump in CD sales in general. *It's sold just a third of what Alicia Keys' As I Am has in the US despite both albums boasting only one Top 3 and a second Top 20 single. It's sold less than MJB's Growing Pains despite that album having only two singles to date, and despite TEOM far outselling The Breakthrough back in 2005. This is a flop on a huge level.
August 30, 200816 yr I think Bye Bye played a part in messing up this album, Its not a bad song, but it was released at the wrong time, it would have been a better winter single, Loving U Long time should have followed Touch My Body, it was the perfect summer single there's no reason it should have flopped.
August 30, 200816 yr A horrific 2nd single didnt help. Loving You Long Time or Migrate would have been my choices of lead single but not sure how well they would have done. Maybe TMB was the best choice for lead, but Bye Bye was just horrible.
August 31, 200816 yr E=MC² has sold OVER 100,000 copies in UK now.. It has sold 1.700l.000 worldwide and shipped almost 2.000.000 copies. Alicia Keys and Mary had Christmas sales. E=MC² i still on the charts in the US There will be a rerelease.. my est: e=mc² will sell over 1.5m in the US (3m worldwide)
September 10, 200816 yr i know, its so sad to see. how good can you f*** up an album and era by choosing the wrong releases. i tell you what went wrong..."migrate" should have been released and made priority. ideally it should have come 1st but we all thought ok let TMB do its thing, its fun and playful track and it got to number1 so its all good. then it will be time to migrate? but no we get the downtempo 2nd release pattern trying to follow EOM formula, but why bye bye? its not as good as ISIL. BB was too obvious with its sentimentality and as many of us wrote it was no WBT. ok so 3rd release, its definately time to migrate? but we get IBLYL. there are much better tracks and fresher sounding ones. this song is very 90s and too slick, it has no edge its very smooth too smooth and not a song for these times. where as migrate has that fresh futuristic sound that perfect fusion of hip hop and r'n'b, its got hot rapper t-pain to attract the urban market too. the production is flawless and mariah soulful sultry voice over the tough beat is just perfect. and then those passionate vocal ad libs at the end! chills i tell u!! its EPIC!! mariah at her best!! but sadly it will end up as a hidden gem. i blame the decision makers 100%. its not about bad videos or bad promo but bad singles!! sony f***ed up! it could have gone so much better and still could but they got idiots working over there who don't understand this album and its strengths.
September 13, 200816 yr TMB was an ok release but it wasn't an album seller at all, Bye Bye was a terrible choice for a single its just not that comerical, the video was boring and promotion was too early in the U.S. Lovin you long time was ok but again it wasn't enough to revive the album Migrate could've done it probably had she done sufficent promotion.

Well made points and i totally agree with your comments, esp. regarding the style of the songs IBLYLT is very 90s Mariah just with a thin glossy veneer which is probably why it didn't work- is ok just forgetable. Dunno if the blame is with sony or mariah's management or def jam or whoever, but whoever it is what did they think they were playing at?
September 17, 200816 yr If you change the question too, What went Right? then you'd probably get a more Exact answer :(
