Actually he does.

Scott Mills is one of the few DJ's who provides input to the weekly Playlist meetings. Hence frequently other DJ's remark when they play the occasional camp record that has made the playlist that it must be (is) Scott Mills fault for having to play it.

However it is a committee decision, so whilst an individual can have an influence, one person alone cannot stop a record being playlisted by a national station.

I think your sweeping statement that Will does not appeal to young people is wide of the mark, I have female friends who have seen Will live and he has a substantial young female fanbase. But I guess looking like a young Bruce Forsyth about to turn 30(?) means he is not suitable for Radio 1 to play.

Especially as Radio 1 is too busy playlisting songs by youngsters like U2 & Madonna.

More likely the influence that Simon Cowell has on Radio 1 (with their X Factor tie ins) means that they are happy to oblige and not playlist his records when they playlist inferior indentikit records by the likes of Sam Beeton & James Morrison.

Peversely, Simon Fuller seems to have a lot of influence on Radio 2 hence (Annie Lennox can release a tuneless record far past her prime and the station will still playlist it), I can easily imagine Radio 1 saying to Radio 2 he is all yours. Whilst seeing that Radio 2 gets over 3 million + more listeners than Radio 1 on a weekly basis and still seems to have the full support of Commercial Radio Stations, then I guess it is not too big a loss to Will or his potential record sales. :D

Whilst I believed he had no influence my point remains intact, he alone cannot stop the track being playlisted.

No offense but being much younger than yourself I think I know more younger people and I know no-one male or female, my age on here who is a Will fan. Nor, I bet, could many fellow posters around my age who post here name friends who are too. He's marketed toward a much older clientele. What appeal does he have to someone my age?

Also you blur the argument. Here we discussing the age of fanbases and therefore radio support. What relevance do U2 and Madonna have to the argument. The age of performers is neither here nor there. Their music clearly appeals to Radio 1's target demographic hence why they are playlisted.

The Simon Cowell point has already been explored so I need not respond to that.

Radio 1 is run on payola and demographic targets as far as I see which is creatively bankrupt tbh isn't it? But that's the way they work. All this bullshine about vendettas is way long of the mark and just typical stanship behavior as seen with countless other groups. Xtina for example esp last era when B2B was a relative flop.

With respect Jake - the microcosm that is Buzzjack, and you yourself, is in no way representative of the young people of this country who do like, buy and follow Will Young.

Just because you personally know of no-one doesn't mean they don't exist.

I think Jake was on about a wider sense of the country, as well as BuzzJack, and was just using BuzzJack as an example. I know no-one of my age who is a Will Young fan (yet my mum is/was). That's not to say they don't exist, because they probably do, but i'm very sure if there was a survey of Radio 1's target audience the majority who considered themselves to be a Will Young fan would be in a small minority. There's always exceptions to stuff however. People may like certain songs, but I don't think they'd consider themselves fans as such.

While I do no doubt there are young Will fans, I would think it would be completely obvious that he is marketed to a much older generation.

Well all I can say is there must be a heck of a lot of closet Will fans out there because he sold almost 1,600,000 of Friday's Child and over 1,000,000 of Keep On just in the UK

Any road up - he'll sell what he'll sell regardless of who buys it - nothing's set in stone thank goodness and so long as he sells enough to get his next advance he, and his fans, will be content.

And I hope it's ok if I continue to lurk on BJ reading some of your interesting , and sometimes, mind boggling threads without feeling the need to join in.

He isn't 'marketed' to an older generation MS his music style just happens to appeal. He won't ever be a rock singer his voice is too good for that 'rawness' but his fans shouldn't be made to feel guilty just because they love his music.

What puzzles me is why he suddenly doesn't appeal to R1's audience when they have played all his previous stuff. I doubt their demographic has changed drastically since he last promoted. But there you go - one of life's little mysteries. :P

P.S. What I should have said is "perceived" not to appeal.

Edited by munchkin

who cares if he gets plays on radio 1 or not? There are artists who need that support a lot more. He's obviously geared towards a more mature audience, hence being A-listed on Radio 2. He's doing amazing on the airplay charts, its the #2 most played/listened song of the week, so he doesnt need to worry at all.

I don't know why you are surprised that Will Young isn't on Radio 1's playlist, I went to a gig in Islington last xmas that was for radio 1 and couldn't believe it 75% of the audience was there to see Will Young and more than half of them were 40 and over :o Now even I know that's not the type of audience that Radio 1 wants is it. I don't think its anything personal towards Will Young, its simply he doesn't attract the type of audience that the radio station wants.

Maybe they should have a rethink then & appeal to a broader band of listener. Perhaps then they would stop losing listeners & have a bigger audience like radio 2.

As munchkin says they have playlisted Will Younng's tracks in the past so why not now? As for the gig at Islington it was sold almost entirely to his websites which I agree is predominantley older fans. There is a much broader mix of fans at his tours & everyone who turned up to watch at the festivals weren't the audience you describe.

We'll just have to disagree that it isn't personal but Will is doing very well on airplay without them so it's all good. :D

The tickets went out via Will's official site, and I would say that does consist of 50% or so in that age range. However, he has lots of younger fans too - on Youtube you can find videos of his festival performances - the venues were packed out with young people - males and females :D

Radio One supported Will really well for his last album, Why should things change? i think there have been some things going on behind the scenes at radio one, and Scott Mills has indeed said some nasty and personal things about Will on air and in a magazine.

You mean he doesn't attract the right age group don't you?

So if 'old' Mick Jagger, or 'old' Sir Paul or that dear old granny Madonna might tune in to Radio 1, the powers that be would rather they hadn't attracted that type, whose age obviouly prevents them from knowing anything about music.

Anyway, as someone else has said, Will is doing phenominally well for airplay, I think it's been the best ever pre release, so as far as I'm concerned, long may he continue without R1 on board. :D

I'm not doing a latest full update as very minimal changes:

Will Young up 1 to 22, Jennifer Hudson up 1 to 28, etc.

Will's up to #20

Jennifer Hudson #26

Woo for J-Hud. Love her!

Her album is number one on HMV for RnB pre-order albums and fourth overall.

Surprise hit album maybe?

Will's up to #20

Jennifer Hudson #26

Yay for them both! :yahoo:
