20 07 ALPHA - ASIA

A lack of Various Artists Comps in 1983. Although SUNNY AFTERNOON, STREET SOUNDS 5, and HEADLINE HITS were all in the top 30. DEPECHE MODE with a chart topping album. PAUL YOUNG got his year in 83 too, a number one album and single. The BEACH BOYS were still going good with albums. The rock sounds of AC/DC, and the like started the pattern of entering high, and then taking massive falls on the following week. In connection with today..MICHAEL JACKSON was also having more than one album in the chart, in the same week. Trivia..I remember taking a subscription to NME in the early 80s. I can remember lots of mistakes, on their chart page. Wrong titles were their problem. I remember ELTON JOHN`s album being wrongly titled on NME`s top 50 albums, as "TOO LATE FOR ZERO". It was certainly "TOO LOW".

Here are 1983`s singles:

w/k ending 17th Sept 83

01 01 RED RED WINE - UB40

02 08 MAMA - GENESIS

03 11 TONIGHT I CELEBRATE MY LOVE - PEABO BRYSON/ROBERTA FLACK

04 02 WINGS OF A DOVE - MADNESS

05 04 WHAT AM I GONNA DO - ROD STEWART

06 10 CONFUSION - NEW ORDER

07 07 SUN GOES DOWN (LIVING IT UP) - LEVEL 42

08 22 DOLCE VITA - RYAN PARIS

09 NE KARMA CHAMELEON - CULTURE CLUB

10 29 COME BACK AND STAY - PAUL YOUNG

11 05 GIVE IT UP - K.C. AND THE SUNSHINE BAND

12 13 WALKING IN THE RAIN - MODERN ROMANCE

13 24 OL` RAG BLUES - STATUS QUO

14 15 CHANCE - BIG COUNTRY

15 03 GOLD - SPANDAU BALLET

16 18 WARRIORS - GARY NUMAN

17 09 I`M STILL STANDING - ELTON JOHN

18 26 CRUSHED BY THE WHEELS OF INDUSTRY - HEAVEN 17

19 14 BAD DAY - CARMEL

20 06 LONG HOT SUMMER/PARIS MATCH - STYLE COUNCIL

21 12 CLUB TROPICANA - WHAM

22 23 NEVER SAY DIE - CLIFF RICHARD

25 20 DISAPPEARING ACT - SHALAMAR

26 19 COME DANCING - KINKS

27 NE GO DEH YAKA (GO TO THE TOP) - MONYAKA

28 21 EVERYTHING COUNTS - DEPECHE MODE

29 28 SHE`S SEXY AND 17 - STRAY CATS

30 36 RIDERS ON THE STORM - ANNABEL LAMB

UB40 being challenged by BOY GEORGE in 1983. GENESIS taking a midweek number 2. No comments please! ;) A lot of almost forgotten songs, in the chart too. MODERN ROMANCE were "WALKING IN THE RAIN", that hardly turns up today. Infact the hits in this chart by BIG COUNTRY, STATUS QUO, NEW ORDER, HEAVEN 17, CLIFF, DAVID GRANT, GARY NUMAN, SHALAMAR, ANNABEL LAMB (and her version of "RIDERS ON THE STORM, the doors 71 hit), STRAY CATS, MONYAKA etc, never get played anywhere today. Honestly, I don`t think CARMEL`s "BAD DAY", has been played since `83. Even outside the top 30 there was: KRAFTWERK (TOUR DE FRANCE), JOBOXERS (JOHNNY FRIENDLY), THE TRUTH (STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION), DAVID ESSEX (TAHITI, from MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY), and DANSE SOCIETY (WAKE UP)..when were they last played?!

Hang on then, for the top singles in 2008. Coming shortly..

Oh dear  (not at the films :P). Hope he gets better then ;)

And i can't believe Mamma Mia is still around, yet the heavily hyped The Duchess (part of that was filmed next door to my house :o ) and the heavily advertised Disaster Movie falls below it.

) Position without downloads alone. Also without downloads alone, Nickelback are 39, and Ironik is 40.

= Is the position on Chart Show tv.

Well, if you`d have told me a few weeks back, that Katy would be knocked off by Kings Of Leon, I would have laughed! Cliff does very well really. This week "Rockstar" fulls out of the top 50. Also outside the 50 are: BONNIE TYLER at 57, and METALLICA have another entry with "Judas Kiss", in the top 70. T.I. sneak in to the top 75, and ELVIS doesn`t hit the top 80. DANIEL POWTER doesn`t do very well, just outside the top 75. ELBOW also have another re-entry as "Grounds For Divorce", re-enters at 74.

Let`s end with the top 10 pre-orders:

01 CHANGES - WILL YOUNG released 22nd

02 LOVE YOU ANYWAY - BOYZONE released 29th

03 SHOCK OF THE LIGHTNING - OASIS released 29th

04 BURNT OUT CAR - ST. ETIENNE released 22nd

05 SO WHAT - PINK released 29th

06 YOU MAKE IT REAL - JAMES MORRISON released 22nd

07 TALKING WALLS - JULIEN JABRE released 29th

08 KISS KISS - CHRIS BROWN released 15th

09 LOVE ME NO MORE - NIKI EVANS released 29th

10 JOIN WITH US - THE FEELING released 15th

Will Boyzone beat Oasis, on the 29th Sept?

NOTE: Remember this is not the official chart. It is based on Chart Show tv`s chart, with added sales to bring it up todate. The Chart Show top 40, can be seen on Saturdays between 10am - 1pm, on Sky Channel 365.

I think Elbow are missing from the albums there

Remember the album chart, breaks off on a Wednesday for this compilation. Elbow are 33, on this one. But like you say, it will be around the top 10 now. I couldn`t doing anything to push it higher, because on Wednesday evening, it was not that high yet.

Although like I say, I did use pre-orders for Metallica.

Can I ask, on the pre-order singles chart, is it based on just what was sold this week, or is it the accumlated sales for each single.

Good sales for Boyzone must be mostly on Amazon sales because it was only avilble to pre order on hmv on Thursday.

The top 10, I typed is based on the weekly orders. Like you say Boyzone was only available at HMV from Thurs. I think the HMV only pre-orders show Oasis at the top, and Will Young at 2. Where as if you take total pre-orders, you get a bigger picture of popularity. Although both Oasis, and Boyzone most certainly have different fans!

Are sales close between the artists in the top 10 ? thanks

Pretty close in the top 3 of Will, Boyzone, and Oasis. The gap between Oasis, and St. Etienne is big. But Pink is much closer to St. Etienne. From James Morrison the gap grows moderately.

It's been a good day weather wise over much of the country so the legions of Cliff fans may have unleashed an assault on woolies stores up and down the country. You know he could just spring a surprise tomorrow!
