When you consider the last No1 from a released album was Timbaland’s The Way I Are (Obviously excluding Mint Royale as that reached No1 solely because of Britain’s Got Talent), then in the current market the only way to get a massive hit is to release new material i.e. first single off album, first single off special or deluxe editions, release more than one single before the album or release a stop gap single. I think this will become popular in the future with chart position aware acts…
it also will depend on how much certain artists care about chart positions, like you said. it's still very possible to have a big hit off an album that's been successful - if it's a song that catches on, casual buyers will still buy it as a download just like physical singles in their prime. now, without the physical release push though, second, third, etc. singles that are big hits tend to have lower peaks. so i can see the girls alouds and spice girls of the future releasing minimal singles from an album and having one-offs more for sure.
Travis's "Coming around" was another case. It was released after "The Man Who" cycle in 2000 but it's not in "The invisible band" album.
