METRO review :

Girls Aloud: Out Of Control

by ZENA ALKAYAT - Monday, November 3, 2008

4/5

Six years, five albums and 19 Top Ten hits: Girls Aloud are a pop-wannabe's dream.

Certainly, for a product of the reality TV machine, the group continue to defy critics with ever-catchier songs and a longevity that's down to more than just attention from the red tops.

Success is, in part, thanks to the services of Brian Higgins's Xenomania production company, which is all over the Girls' latest outing like a rash.

A checklist of pop genres have been systematically ticked off here: if you think that's an exaggeration, listen to dancehall-style Revolution In The Head, complete with Nadine Coyle's superbly embarrassing bashment chat.

Elsewhere, you get club-floor dance, 1980s electro (particularly on the Pet Shop Boys collaboration, The Loving Kind), the 1960s vibe of their current single, The Promise, and drum'n'bass beats.

This soundclash may be nothing new but here it feels as though the goal may be real music rather than stick-in-your-head chart-busters.

A litter of sure-fire singles have, of course, been included but there's a tentative move away from crowd-pleasing hits that, though not entirely convincing, might coax the cynics down off their musical high horses.

Well it's up to 2 (The Album)

[03] 04| Girls Aloud - The Promise (Single Version)

[**] 94| Girls Aloud - The Promise (Album Version)

[***] 100| Girls Aloud - The Loving Kind

That's what has charted at the moment! ^_^

So far I'm not hugely impressed with this album, but then again I've always said that GA are growers. I think 'The Promise' is the only song of theirs I've ever liked instantly. 'Tangled Up' I refused to listen to for weeks because on first listen it was so bad :heehee: So that said, I think this album has potential but as yet tis distinctly average.
i think its great, there is a mature sound to it. i love the loving kind.
Most GA stuff are definatly growers i agree. I remember being horrified when if first heard Biology and Sexy No No No, now i think both are brilliant.

I brought it today on CD - finally! I couldnt get it after work yesterday...

I hope its a grower as I only like the 2nd song on it at the moment! I have all there albums - didnt like the last one at first - but now love it! Hated Call the shots too but thats my fave song of theres now!!

I've just got my album, I don't normally buy Girls Aloud albums but was swayed by Tangled Up because I loved all the singles on it. That album was a bit disappointing, there was only about another two non singles on it that I liked...

However, as a whole I LOVE this! Have only listened once but theres a few that have grabbed me instantly, I think my favourites so far are Rolling Back The Rivers..., Untouchable and Love is Pain

I've never bought any of the three previous studio albums (got the greatest hits) but I notice they are all insanely cheap online at the minute about £4 each so which is the best or should I just buy them all?!

Buy the lot!!!

Especially 'What Will the Neighbours Say'

You need to buy Chemistry aswell, you could give the first album a miss though if you want too.
