OK, thought I'd do one which celebrates the year I was born. It was a year the so called "new romantic" era was at its peak. Some great records this year - here are my favourites:

1. Teardrop Explodes - Reward

Fantastic tune!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU3XjOwwfJE

2. Visage - Fade To Grey

Still can't get enough of this

3. Spandau Ballet - Chant No.1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lkcqw5YOXfc

4. Human League - Don't You Want Me

One of the best pop records ever!

5. Kim Wilde - Cambodia

Could have gone for Kids In America, but love this too

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI2K8d-52rE

6. Blondie - Rapture

The rap made no sense, but still, what a tune

7. Yoko Ono - Walking On Thin Ice

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2J7X7s8S1ns

8. Soft Cell - Bedsitter

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFaIhDLb_NE

9. Abba - One Of Us

Still one of my favs from them

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orO9E7fC0mo

10. Dollar - Hand Held In Black And White

Great Trevor Horn production

11. Tenpole Tudor - Swords Of A Thousand Men

12. Madness - It Must Be Love

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnTmRKuMqqs

And of course, the worst of the year...quite a close one! Joe Dolce was absolutely criminal, but this evil record just pipped him for the title of worst "song" of '81:

we did a 'new romantics' album a while ago :)

but never mind... my 81 album (to follow) would have many of your tracks on it.

I don't mind a bit of Human League, but am I on my own with thinking "Don't You Want Me' is one of their worse? The vocals on it are awful. "Sound Of The Crowd" is much better!

There's a major omission from my list.

Adam And The Ants - Stand And Deliver

One of my fav 80s tracks, can't believe I left it out

7. Yoko Ono - Walking On Thin Ice

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2J7X7s8S1ns

8. Soft Cell - Bedsitter

2 of the best singles from any year, I reckon... the Yoko Ono single is just incredible... one of my favourite ever singles. This was the track Lennon was working on on the night of his death - well, he'd have died happy with this one for sure. Awesome. Not heard this mix before, though?

I agree. Walking On Thin Ice is superb. Deserved to do much better

:cheer: ... spot on... 'sound of the crowd' was my fav track of 81, 'dont you want me' was a cheap sell-out track for the masses to make them some money!

i also rate highly 'empire state human' and 'being boiled'.

it seemed that the human league (along with dexys midnight runners, ub40, spandau ballet, adam and the ants and others) best material was their early stuff, and as they became established their work got noticably poorer as they sold out to money.

whilst I, too, prefer Love Action and Sound of the Crowd, there's no denying that Don't You Want Me is a near-perfect pop record... lyrically brilliant and Moroder-esque.... it was a classic single and one that, if it hadn't been so popular and spent so long at number one, we'd hold in far higher regard, i think.

I agree. I love "Don't You Want Me". I was in the sixth form at the time and had a Christmas job working at HMV in Sunderland. Apart from the fact I love that song anyway, I just remember the amount of copies we shifted at the time - it was literally flying off the shelves. In the week running up to Christmas that year we had a delivery of the record - on both 7" and 12" - every day for that entire week and sold almost every copy we had each and every day...

i knew id done this list somewhere before,... last march!

well mine aint much different from brians!

human league - 'sound of the crowd' my fav on '81, my fav of the new romantic scene and my fav of the human league, to me this is the anthem of 'new romantics'.

adam and the ants - 'kings of the wild fronteer' adam at his best imho, although stand and deliver was the perfect pop song, this track was my fav

visage - 'fade to grey'... one of the best tracks ever from mr button mushroom ;) , russ will understand! lol, seminal video and another major new romantic anthem. love it

ultravox - 'vienna'. ott, pretencious, dark, nonsensical, but so what!!! a classic!

tenpole tudor - swords of a thousand men' great bit of 'fun' pop,

landscape - 'einstein a go-go' a great one hit wonder (more or less).

department s - 'is vic there' wouldnt sound out of place in todays indie scene, only this sound was original! great riff

passions - 'im in love with a german film star' another dark oddity.. good stuff

human league - 'being boiled' a second appearance from phil n co, and another excellant track

spandau ballet - 'to cut a long story short' great first track when they were fresh, another great riff too..

teardrop explodes - 'when i dream' check this track out guys...its fantastic and better then 'reward'..

eurythmics - 'never gonna cry again' their first and be far their best, another one worth checking out..

The Birdie Song :puke2:

The Birdy Song is not the worst song by any means...yeah its a daft polka and one that seems to be performed by blokes dressed as chickens..however was watching that Stiff at the bbc show from bbc four this morning and it featured an old totp countdown with the birdy song at two....and dave (egg) stewart and barbara (Spirogyra) gaskin's it my party was at number one..a record much worse than some novelty polka fluff...making the atmosphe even worse was the general awfulness of the whole perfomance with gaskin's bad teeth and general found living in a clothes for africa recycling bin - turn up in what you wore on the bus chic

50 cent - The Birdy Song vs In Da Club

Eminem - real slim shady birdy song mix

also had on alvin stardust pretend again - with was another awful stiff record..

however my fave record of today is this:

i have been singing Wunderbar Wunderbar Wunderbar over and over again as it is so good and has superceeded the new wild beasts record as the one you have to play again and again and might have to get the Stiff box this week...now i might try sing it in Laibach cover version stylee...tho it might just sound like below

:cheer: Ramstein - Amerika :cheer:
