October 11, 200816 yr 1985 was the beginning of the end of the Top 40 for me. It was beginning to be dominated by awful tracks and SAW were making their insidious inroads. So here are my fav tracks of 1985 (probably got enough for a decent vol 2 as well) 1. She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult 2. Cloudbusting - Kate Bush 3. Love Like Blood - Killing Joke 4. That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore - The Smiths 5. Cities in Dust - Siouxsie and the Banshees 6. Bring on the Dancing Horses - Echo and the Bunnymen 7. Close to Me - The Cure 8. Don't Come Around Here No More - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers 9. Duel - Propaganda 10. The Whole of the Moon - The Waterboys 11. Would I Lie To You? - Eurythmics 12. Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds Funnily enough most of these actually made the Top 40 but led me to investigate outside the Top 40 the following year. October 11, 200816 yr SAW were making their insidious inroads. And AMEN! to that! :D Sorry, it's a bit of an in-joke with the whole S/A/W thing (I have a bit of a fetish for their empty-headed flimsy pop muzak!) 1985 is a challenge for me, I was barely walking at the time. I'm sure there is ten tracks I do like from this circa however, let me think.... Madonna "Into The Groove"... Possibly my favorite Madge track. Pointer Sisters "Dare Me"... Was sampled on Junior Jack's "Dare Me/Stupidisco" Dead Or Alive "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)"... I think it's fair to say this a classic. Grace Jones "Slave To The Rhythm"... ice-cool track from the mentalist diva! This is a problem. 1985 seemed like it was the end of electro disco but was also sometime before the house music revolution, so this is slim pickings.
October 11, 200816 yr 1985 is a challenge for me well a best of 1985 could be a challenge for everyone as its supposed to be like the worst ever year in pop history (according to some sources)...tho a come back to this has already been detailed in the letters page of the word with loads of alt-rock albums that came out and should not be overlooked however was slightly dispaointed that the thread was not completely blank in a manner of stiff records The Wit & Wisdom of Ronald Reagan concept album  also did everybody get the times the other day with the free copy of psychocandy (if you havent got a deluxe Rhino edition i guess) with the write up of the era by Alan McGee...not quite 1985 but about 1984 he states..."In 1984 JAMC were like ground zero. People weren't making music like that. It Was all dire (Aha [sic], Curiosity Killed The Cat and Kajagoogoo)... maybe Alan McGee is not a big fan of Keane ( ) or still has the memory of a1's cover going round his brain but actually think a-ha are like probably only one of the few mid-80s pop bands that you can listen to and not think that they are truely vomit awful and not that bad when i guess there will be loads of worse acts that he could have mentioned from around then (ay ay ay scary lake men haircut 100 or steven tin tin duffy comes to mind at this point...but as former creation records artistees...you know  dont think McGee would want to bring that fact up) eUB9Rq8FcEQ a-ha Summer Moved On better vocalist than Tom Chaplin too imo...

Garry Mullholland (sorry I know I quote this chap often, but he is possibly the greatest music journalist ever) cites 1985 as one of the worse in pop music history (along with 1992 - which I will defend!). He must be right, as I can do a best of 1984 quite easily.
October 12, 200816 yr 1. Madonna - Into The Groove 2. Sandra - Maria Magdalena 3. A-ha - Take On Me 4. Falco - Rock Me Amadeus 5. Modern Talking - You're My Heart You're My Soul 6. Nik Kershaw - The Riddle 7. Modern Talking - Cheri Cheri Lady 8. Tina Turner - Private Dancer 9. Baltimora - Tarzan Boy 10. Opus - Live Is Life 11. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill 12. Tears For Fears - Shout
October 13, 200816 yr Meat is Murder was definitely my album of the year in 85. In fact I rate it more highly than The Queen is Dead. And the song Meat is Murder did change my life leading me to stop eating meat (eventually!)
October 13, 200816 yr I love Meat Is Murder, too.... especially Barbarism Begins At Home. 'Well I Wonder', too... their big mistake with that album was releasing totally wrong singles from it.... That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore's a great Smiths album track or b-side, but it should never have been a single. 85 was Kate Bush's year for me, though.... I don't think there was a more accomplished album than Hounds of Love released in 85... possibly not for the whole of the decade, actually.

He must be right, as I can do a best of 1984 quite easily. there are plenty worse years then 85 in pop music history, but not many worse then 92! i dont rate mullhollands opinion that high m8... tbh i prefer charles shaar murray.
October 14, 200816 yr Who is this Gary Mulholland? Who does/did he write for? pops up all over, especially on them 'countdown' programmes...
October 14, 200816 yr Again singles only - 1 track per artist: 1985 My Top 12 1. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill - A timeless track that sounds better now than it did back then. My favourite track of the decade. 2. Propaganda - Duel - Quite possibly Trevor Horn's best ever production for the Germanic quartet. 3. A-ha - Take On Me - It might be overplayed, whilst A1's cover should never have been allowed to happen, but it is a truly great track. 4. Grace Jones - Slave To The Rhythm - Yet another Trevor Horn production. A Truly magnificent vocal performance that makes a mockery of a ludicrous Simon Cowell statement regarding one of the female singers in X Factor sounds like this singer. 5. Killing Joke - Love Like Blood - A truly fantastic rock track that could only have occurred in the 1980s. 6. Prince - Raspberry Beret - How the hell did this track fantastic pop track only make UK#25? 7. Billy Idol - White Wedding - Surely William Broad's career highlight. 8. Duran Duran - A View To A Kill - The last track released by "the famous five" for 19 years. Personally I don't think a Bond theme since has been better. 9. The Smiths - How Soon Is Now - Johnny Marr's ultra distorted musical rewrite of Mona and a truly visceral Mozz lyric. I still think the TATU cover was awful. 10. Don Henley - The Boys Of Summer - A truly memorable Californian West Coast track. Great lyrics too. 11. Prefab Sprout - Faron Young - Paddy McAloon was a critics darling, who's music was sadly too intelligent for public consumption. 12. Talking Heads - Road To Nowhere - Another track that sounded timeless then and still does now thanks to its Cajun feel to it.
October 14, 200816 yr Author Anyone remember Maria Vidal - Body Rock? I had it on Now 6 - I really liked that one!
October 14, 200816 yr 11. Prefab Sprout - Faron Young - Paddy McAloon was a critics darling, who's music was sadly too intelligent for public consumption. im not familiar with this... was it in some way a tribute the 'faron young' who scored a hit in 72 with 'its four in the morning'?
October 14, 200816 yr im not familiar with this... was it in some way a tribute the 'faron young' who scored a hit in 72 with 'its four in the morning'? Think it was a kind of tribute song, here it is :) Much prefer this to the original Four in the morning :D wsqIyCP6G5g
October 15, 200816 yr 1985 was at the tail end of what I would call "my era". 1986 was its finish... There were some good songs from that year and I have fond memories of the music but I wouldn't call it a classic. My top 10 from that year: 1 Into The Groove - Madonna 2 Since Yesterday - Strawberry Switchblade 3 How Soon Is Now - Smiths 4 Duel - Propaganda 5 This House - Big Sound Authority 6 See The Day - Dee C Lee 7 Slave To The Rhythm - Grace Jones 8 Bring On The Dancing Horses - Echo And The Bunnymen 9 Walking On the Chinese Wall - Philip Bailey 10 Johhny Come Home - Fine Young Cannibals I'm sure there may be others that would make the top 10, but those were the first 10 that came to mind...
