Fifa is heading for a showdown with the Premier League over its 20-club size.

On Thursday Fifa's Congress endorsed a proposal for Europe's top leagues to be reduced to a maximum of 18 clubs by the start of the 2007-08 season.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter said: "We've been given the power to work on it. We'll do it. It'll give four more days to the international calendar."

But Premier League spokesman Dan Johnson ruled out a reduction: "There's no appetite for this kind of change."

Johnson added: "The only people who are going to tell us how to run the Premier League are the league's 20 member clubs' chairmen.

"They are the only ones who can change the composition of the league and they are just not going to go for this - no way."

Fifa's decision could also hit the Spanish, Italian, and French leagues.

I heard this earlier today although. Blatter is an absolute disgrace. The premiership will become a farce if this happens. FIFA may have the power but I don't think anybody would want the premiership reduced to 18 teams and I hinsetley think that Blatter comes up with these statements to make him look busy as most of the time he has bugger all to do.
So that would either mean no promoted teams which wouldn't really work, 5 relegated teams, still three promoted but not really fair. Or 4 relegated teams and only 2 promoted teams, would probably be the fairist option but having an 18 team primership would suck!
I was actualy thinking it would be better at 22 teams, the rest of the leagues can be 24 but 22 primership temas would be good i think.
It ALWAYS had 22 teams until the mid/late 90's when they reduced it to 20. ;) that year only one team got promoted into the Premiership.

I agree chelsea are ruining the league  and man.u. can just **** off anyway

God your and Alias posts really are dull.

18 clubs. What a stupid idea. No, keep it at 20 it's far better :) we need at least some $h!tty sides in there!
