18 11 FANTASTIC - WHAM

19 06 NORTH OF A MIRACLE - NICK HEYWARD

20 20 ALIVE SHE CRIED - THE DOORS

CULTURE CLUB just pipping LIONEL RICHIE to the post in 1983. 6 weeks at the top for CULTURE CLUB..rather like the single. LIONEL got stuck at 2..again rather like his current single. BOB DYLAN was around as ever. UB40 gave us the first part of LABOUR OF LOVE the first time round. PAUL MCCARTNEY was at his zenith position..though the single went all the way. GENESIS gave us their best. THE JAM was a retro of their hits, called SNAP! BILLY JOEL was rising back into prominence. ROLLING STONES were doing as well as their single. PAUL YOUNG was a-drift, but the singles kept coming. MICHAEL JACKSON wouldn`t go away. THE CARPENTERS latest was a-tributing the sad death of KAREN CARPENTER. DAVID BOWIE gave us his blockbuster film. ROXY MUSIC gave us their best of the Atlantic label years. ELTON JOHN wouldn`t go away either. DARYL HALL AND JOHN OATES did ok with the album, but "SAY IT ISN`T SO", was the curent single, that was a big Radio 2 airplayer, but didn`t sell much. NICK HEYWARD took a solo single "BLUE HAT FOR A BLUE DAY" off the album..but the album itself was bombing down the top 20. THE DOORS current album was a live offering of recently discovered tracks..a mini album though.

The 1983 singles:

01 01 UPTOWN GIRL - BILLY JOEL

02 09 SAY SAY SAY - PAUL MCCARTNEY/MICHAEL JACKSON

03 02 ALL NIGHT LONG - LIONEL RICHIE

04 08 CRY JUST A LITTLE BIT - SHAKIN STEVENS

05 10 SUN AND THE RAIN - MADNESS

06 04 PUSS N`BOOTS - ADAM ANT

07 07 LOVE CATS - CURE

08 06 SAFETY DANCE - MEN WITHOUT HATS

09 25 UNDERCOVER OF THE NIGHT - ROLLING STONES

10 39 NEVER NEVER - ASSEMBLY

11 05 KARMA CHAMELEON - CULTURE CLUB

12 03 UNION OF THE SNAKE - DURAN DURAN

13 12 PLEASE DON`T MAKE ME CRY - UB40

14 NE SOLID BOND IN YOUR HEART - STYLE COUNCIL

15 15 THAT WAS THEN BUT THIS IS NOW - ABC

16 16 A MESS OF BLUES - STATUS QUO

17 27 ONLY FOR LOVE - LIMAHL

18 23 UNCONDITIONAL LOVE - DONNA SUMMER/MUSICAL YOUTH

19 28 LOVE WILL TEAR US APART - JOY DIVISION

20 17 SYNCHRONICITY II - POLICE

21 13 HEY YOU - ROCKSTEADY CREW

22 24 RIGHT BY YOUR SIDE - EURYTHMICS

23 31 CALLING YOUR NAME - MARILYN

24 NE LOVE OF THE COMMON PEOPLE - PAUL YOUNG

25 11 THEY DON`T KNOW - TRACEY ULLMAN

26 14 NEW SONG - HOWARD JONES

27 NE THIS CHARMING MAN - SMITHS

33 NE THAT`S ALL - GENESIS

34 NE THRILLER - MICHAEL JACKSON

35 20 SUPERMAN - BLACK LACE

36 NE HOLD ME NOW - THOMPSON TWINS

37 40 REILLY - OLYMPIC ORCHESTRA

38 32 LICK IT UP - KISS

39 18 KISS THE BRIDE - ELTON JOHN

40 21 KISSING WITH CONFIDENCE

The hat-trick for BILLY JOEL in 1983. On the following week, SAY SAY SAY dethroned him on the MRIB top 40..chiefly because the song was hyped back up the chart, by uk radio and tv in 83. Even featuring on NOEL EDMOND`s ill-fated LATE LATE BREAKFAST SHOW. SHAKIN STEVENS had another top 3 hit here. MADNESS carried on. ADAM ANT was getting Pantomimey. THE CURE got there first top tenner. MEN WITHOUT HATS couldn`t find a follow up. THE ASSEMBLY was FEARGAL SHARKEY`s latest outfit..and another MRIB number one! Down for SIMON LE BON and co. STYLE COUNCIL were always sure of the highest new entry. ABC and the QUO were both stuck..the QUO covering ELVIS circa 1960. LIMAHL away from KAJAGOOGOO had limited success for 2 years. 2 hits for MUSICAL YOUTH one with DONNA SUMMER, and 007 was a re-make of the 1967 hit for DESMOND DEKKER. JOY DIVISION who grew into NEW ORDER were in, following the big 12 incher, of BLUE MONDAY. MARILYN was a good pal of BOY GEORGE. EURYTHMICS were still doing ok. THE POLICE took SYNCRONICITY II off the album "SYNCRONICITY". AZTEC CAMERA should of crack the top ten, but didn`t. We had the single version of "THRILLER". THE SMITHS cracked in, all over the NME, as usual. REILLY was the theme to Thames tv`s series REILLY ACE OF SPIES. YES were into the 30, big rock giants featuring JON ANDERSON. The top 40 began with a "kissing" theme..featuring WILL POWERS/CARLY SIMON, and old baldy ELTON JOHN!

(The vintage charts from MRIB/Independant Radio November 1983).

Hang on for the latest singles, coming soon...

Hi Dave. Thanks for this, great as ever

Disappointed Mamma Mia isn't back in the films top 10 (although to be honest I didn't get to see it again myself), but I know the DVD is going to be HUUUUUUUUGE next week :)

1983 - I was 12 then & I just released that I now own 8 of the Top 20 albums from that chart compared to 1 from this week's Top 30 albums (Now 71).

And on a separate note, I love this track

08 06 SAFETY DANCE - MEN WITHOUT HATS  I remember playing this and the New Order track all day long, I just love Blue Monday, New Order were at their peak in those days.

Oh god yeah, Blue Monday is amazing  I was a bit shocked the other day to realise New Order wasn't a big act until the 90s though. True Faith (amazing) and Bizarre Love Triangle (less so) both flopped :o

Eh? "True Faith" was #4!!

You're right, I think I meant Theives Like Us, but even that was a middling hit...

Not true, they had plenty of hits in the 80s which went Top 40.

Blue Monday and True Faith were big hits, they also charted with Round and Round, Touched By

The Hand Of God, and Fine Time.

Can't wait for the singles - hope Beyonce is still number one (or the Killers!)

Thanks Dave - a good read. That 1983 chart brought back some memories and suddenly I feel old!

Dave - was the Take That UC mention last week a mistake then? I've noticed its back in the top 20 in the Tesco chart and in my local HMV but that's all I've seen.

TAKE THAT number one single, next week??? MCFLY increasing in pre-orders, may get in the way. Can they beat off Beyonce, and those X Factor Finalists? KILLERS definate number one album. So many singles released on Monday, so some poor vocalists will miss out...

TomKay, this Week 'Mamma Mia!' dropped from No.11 to No.13 in the UK Film

Charts.

However, it took more money than it did 2 Weeks ago, when it was at No.9 in

the Top 10. It is just that the Top 12 Films took even more cash this Week, which

is why 'Mamma Mia!' dropped to No.13.

The Film has taken £67,879,439 in the UK - so far. It is unlikely to overtake

'Titanic' now. That Film is the 'All Time' No.1 Film at the UK Box Office - £69,025,646.

So, 'Mamma Mia!' will have to settle for 2nd place, as this Week End is its last in UK

Cinemas - the DVD is out on Monday. (24th November). We will see if the DVD can

sell a UK Million - in a Week. (Monday 24th to Saturday 29th). So far, the fastest

Selling DVD of 2008, (UK), is 'Sex & The City' - 820,000 in its first Week. A far bigger,

Weekly Sale, than any Single or Album this Year. But, 'Mamma Mia!' was a much bigger

Film than 'Sex & The City' - so, can it sell more, (& faster), than that Film on DVD?

I believe it was just the original at a reduced price (again)!

Thanks Dave! Great stuff :D Glad we finally have a new number one, although I don't really rate it, although it's already been number one for two weeks on the Bullboard sales and airplay chart!

Sorry to hijack your thread, but this week's Bullboard chart might be delayed slightly and I won't be able to post any more retros until at least sunday evening. Going away for the weekend and will have limited internet access :(

Edited by TomKay

Thanks for posting, I'm surprised at Alesha been above Beyoyo, considering Beyoyo is #1 combined, she must be doing better on downloads.
With all these pre-orders next week we could have a busy top 10!

I think come Tuesday we will see many of the top 10 slipping to make way for the new enteries..Well at least on itunes anyway.

With TT & SD almost garanteed to hit top 10 with their tracks..that's at least 2 gone..

PLUS...

Could BOB The Builder really make top 10!?! lol.

Womanizer is surely going back into the top 5.

&&

T.I Surely going to climb possibly taking the top spot!

X-Factor has surely got to fall this week and next week...

Exciting week for singles

Albums I think it's pretty obvious who's going to take the crown :w00t:

Is it? Who then? :P Could be The Killers or Axl and Co.
