EXACTLY! Was there a rule that he couldnt be black when he regenerates? Surely him being black in itself is a step forward and keeping the show running?!

smacks of desperation, a new gimmick initiated by the pc brigade to meet ethnic quotas, THATS my main objection, but like ive also said, its about casting, fitting the part... the part that has traditionally been played by a white man. i dont see dr who (after 45 years) a anything other then what he always been... ok some here welcome the change, inevitable, but ive more then explained why i dont like it and ive yet to hear an argument to persuade me otherwise.

I really don't think this is a move to be more PC - it is surely a natural move to properly consider all actors/actresses now that times have moved on?
Why is anybody even bothering arguing this point now? It's quite clear Rob and Craig's minds have been made up. Let them stew in their own Hitler juice and be happy knowing that our lack of prejudice makes us superior people. :)

wake up matt ...:) there is a clear directive that the bbc MUST depict ethnic minorities in a more favourable light. thats why you have a muslim female in robin hood... AS IF!, thats why there are 19th centuary 'ladies' who are afro-carribean, IT WASNT LIKE THAT! the fcukin pc brigade are distorting THE TRUTH about history just to meet some liberal pc up there own arses directive...

the facts are that people from ethnic minorities did not hold positions of power in history... now that might have been unfair... but its fact. the appointing of a black dr who is exactly the same thing, it has nothing to do with talent, nothing to do with tradition, nothing to do with moving the programme foreward... after all.. dr who comes from the FUTURE, so if he came as white, then the future dictates that hes white! lol.

this has nothing to do with being 'the best for the role', its all about ethnic quotas, and that stinks.

what hitler jiuce? dont be such a pillock... i oppose 1 postion, ONE. again, its about 'fitting' the role, ive already listed loads who wouldnt be suitable... liz smith, am i ageist? hardly as hartnell was old! gordon brown?... sizeist? dont be daft! the role has a clear remit and always has had.

probably because theres a shortage of arab actors! .

What 'shortage' of Arab or actors of Arabian origin....? It's an AMERICAN film you pillock.... :P It was CAST in the US, with an Australian actor (Russell Crowe) in the role of an American CIA analyst also.... So, er, a shortage of white, American actors also then by your logic one presumes....?

What about the character of Nasir (who was a Moor, ie, an Arab or North African Muslim) in the early 1980s ITV series "Robin of Sherwood", I presume you believe the late 90s and 00s concept of "political correctness" to be retroactive then yes....? Okay, granted, not a female character, but still, the idea of a non-anglo saxon "merry man" was put in there LONG BEFORE the beeb did their series....

I'm sorry, but I just do NOT believe your conspiracy-theory bullsh!t concerning the Beeb, particularly when one can point to precedent such as this when 'PC' as a media construct never even existed....

Trevor Phillips not long ago commented that there was not enough blacks on tv particularly in soaps

And, er, he was right to do so if you ask me... Look at "Eastenders".... Fukkin' LAUGHABLE that is when one damn well KNOWS that the East End isn't even anything like that in reality.. The Hackney, Bethnal Green, Stepney, Mile End, Clapton, Whitechapel and Aldgate areas (which IS the East End of London) are FULL of Asians, Turks, Poles, Greeks, Jews, etc... My own LANDLORD when I lived in Hackney was a Greek dude, and my local shop was run by two young Turkish lads.... The East-End as shown in Eastenders is more like fukkin' ESSEX-Enders....

...Like I say, LAUGHABLE..... And not anything to do with PC.... :P

thats why there are 19th centuary 'ladies' who are afro-carribean, IT WASNT LIKE THAT!

Actually, you did have instances in Victorian Britain where English lords and ladies would bring back "pet" female Africans, dress them up like "ladies" and parade them around for their own fukkin' bourgeois amusement.... <_<

Quite right Jester... I agree totally... Using the example of the "Survivors" remake, well, to NOT consider black or asian cast members now just because the original show was all white actors would just be bloody ridiculous.... That is NOT how Britain is in 2008..... In the 60s and 70s you dont have many black or asian actors coming through, so naturally The Doctor IS gonna be a white actor, it's not like that now, black and asian actors are far more commonplace, therefore, they SHOULD be considered for whatever role is out there, and because The Doctor is not fixed as being any kind of particular race or gender due to regeneration, then there is NO REASON to not consider a black, hispanic, chinese or asian actor if they are good enough....

Aside from the debate...

Oh my gosh, he would be amazing <3. He makes me laugh hard, especially in Green Wing.

I nearly always confuse him with Richard Ayoade (Moss from the IT Crowd).

Ayoade was the one who starred in The Mighty Boosh as a member of the Shamen, right? Not Joseph?

And I'm so confused about Rob/Craig. I mean I see where they're coming from but...for want of better words...it is kind of right that more people of ethnic minorities should be on tv? Ah well though.

Of course there should be actors from ethnic minorities on tv there are some very talented ones out there not to mention many of the very best Hollywood character actors are black but they need to be in the right roles, rewriting history or changing a near 50 year format just for the sake of looking politically correct is not the way to go about it, I would have no objections to a black assistant to Dr Who or a new black character created for the series but this whole appointment reeks of the BBC trying to look politically correct

The BBC got huge criticism from the likes of Trevor Phillips and some MP's over the fact that the coverage of Obama winning the presidency did not feature any black presenters or reporters and Phillips' previous comments about fines for broadcasters who do not feature blacks stung them too so the BBC having been stung by the outcry over no blacks on Obama night are trying via Dr Who which is probably their highest profile program to show the world they are not racist "look at us we have a black man in a lead role in our highest profile tv series"....

Were you drunk when you created this drivel ?

It is nothing to do with being racist or Hitler-esque, I would be objecting as much if a woman became Dr Who, I just object to history being rewritten or a near 50 year old tradition being broken in the name of political correctness and quotas, like I said if a woman was made Dr Who I would be objecting just as much

But that doesn't show you not to be racist, it just lets us know you're sexist as well.

If you're a stickler for tradition why are you even watching the reinvigorated Doctor Who? It's as far removed from the old show as any two incarnations of the same series could ever be...

OMFG I totally missed that bit Jark posted and sorry but that is FUNNY <3.

Pahahaha Hitler juice - I may have to steal that I'm afraid to say :[.

and?..... the complaint was about a white man playing an arab...

you are a hypocrit and are clearly inconsistent.

you are the one seeing bogeymen behind dna databases, you are the one being deeply suspicious of the identity card scheme, you are the one who doesnt like cctv cameras and see dark forces afoot.... but you fail to see the clear directive from the bbc.. craig posted it up here... that decrees that there HAS to be more ethnic reprisentaion on the beeb! it isnt a conspiracy theory, its a conspiracy FACT.

robin of sherwood was itv! :P

theres NO comparison between 'survivors' which was a p*** poor 70's production and dr who which is an established national treasure!

i quite agree that survivors set in 2008 should include a diverse ethnic mix of people who survived, thats our country today.

But that doesn't show you not to be racist, it just lets us know you're sexist as well.

no it isnt... tennants reign is as close to the hartnell/troughton/pertwee/baker years as you can be, apart from the fact they barely get off earth!!!! santa clause is traditional too.... would a black santa look right?... why is the concept of having a traditionally fixed charactor so unacceptional to you? oh yeah....its an opportinuity to 'have a go' at the oldies <_<.

a longing to keep dr who a white male DOESNT make anyone racist, sexist, sizeist or anti semitic! its simply wanting to uphold a tradition so it doesnt fall victim to the pc brigade.
