PHIL COLLINS "BUT SERIOUSLY", overtook TUBULAR BELLS, as Virgin`s biggest ever album here. Phil sold 600,000 in his first 4 weeks, with it. Even NOW 16 couldn`t get to grips! KYLIE had already topped the chart, on her way down now, and stuck. ROD STEWART did alright. UB40 gave us the 2nd "Labour Of Love". JASON DONOVAN went back up, infact all year round! CHRIS REA had his biggest album. The late ROBERT PALMER gave us the first of his "Addictions". NEW KIDS did not do so well, with the album. CLIFF had his 100th single in 1989, and Stronger was the latest album. The 80s approached the finale, so 80s Compilations were a must. LEVEL 42 missed out on the number one album, beaten by CHRIS REA. RICHARD CLAYDERMAN got out his piano, and gave us various ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER love songs. TEARS FOR FEARS went back up, the album chart, on the back of the current single. JIMMY SOMERVILLE did ok, with current album, and single. BILLY OCEAN had his greatest hits, and had been in the top 5, with the album. Luckily for us, JIVE BUNNY`s Album was at 23 this week, so we don`t have to talk about it...Although it did eventually challenge PHIL COLLINS!

JEFF WAYNE an MRIB only number one in 1989. The following week SOUL II SOUL were also, an MRIB number one! Unfortunately they were overtaken by JIVE BUNNY`s "Let`s Party". LINDA RONSTADT teamed up with AARON NEVILLE. KAOMA taught us the LAMBADA, along with BRUCE FORSYTH (a year after)! BIG FUN were the "Gay Scene" lads. UB40 gave us a re-make of the CHI-LITES 1974 hit. 808 STATE, LATINO RAVE, MIXMASTER took us into trance. JASON DONOVAN was ready for Christmas. LISA STANSFIELD had her biggest hit. STONE ROSES gave us the NME front covers. INNER CITY had virtually had it. JIMMY SOMERVILLE gave us a catchy duet. Down went Phil`s tribute to the homeless. Mr WHITNEY HOUSTON "BOBBY BROWN " gave us a forgotten hit. ERASURE began to get samey. HAPPY MONDAYS also made the NME front covers. FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS were not the men, they were..and proved so chart-wise. ROB N`RAZ, took us to the dancefloor, along with D MOB. Another number 2 for KYLIE!! No comments please! KATE BUSH squeezed in. TINA TURNER was on her way to another top tenner, from "THE BEST". MILLI VANILLI were still not singing, but in the top 50 twice. BLACK BOX had the biggest hit of the year..although slightly nicked! The BEAUTIFUL SOUTH were sailing alone, with a slight chart hiccup. LONDON BOYS had their third (but forgotten hit). IRON MAIDEN crashed down the chart, as usual. A bunch of forgotten hits from BON JOVI, BEATMASTERS, TONGUE N`CHEEK, and WET WET WET...NEVILLE BROTHERS covered BOB DYLAN. And thumbs down for the woman, who recently said to me "Van Morrison" was never the same after leaving the DOORS!!!! No madam, that was JIM MORRISON, and he is dead...well maybe! Have we all forgotten IZIT in 1989, with "STORIES?" It was like watching the test card!!

Coming soon the up to minute top singles, exclusive to Buzzjack...

Hi Dave, thanks for this  So glad Mamma Mia is still number one DVD. Does the DVD charts include Blu-Rays by the way? I just got a PS3 and they're amazing...

Thanks! :D

very interesting indeed.

Just want to remind you that in the album column there is a mistake regarding Rhydian's album.

Last week he finished as a THIRD /you placed him on the fourth, which is wrong/ and currently he is on the 7th place, you have decided and put him on the 9th position.

Can you at least change the last week position of Rhydian which is officially third!

I am very much devoted fan of Rhydian!

as far as I am aware they do. Apparently last week (the week it sold over 3m copies in total) Mamma Mia sold 28,000 copies on Blu-Ray, which doesn't seem a very big figure to me.

Edited by Robbie

Good chart from 1989 dave and shocked that Eve Of The War was a MRIB number one. Sales must have been close back then?

Great chart from 1989, i remember that year well.

Thanks as always Dave.

Yes - The DVD Chart includes Blu-Ray Sales. The Blu-Ray Market is still

very small in the UK.

So, of 'Mamma Mia!'s 3,124,459 DVD Sales last Week, only 28,000 were

on Blu-Ray. It was outsold on Blu-Ray by the No.2 DVD - 'WALL-E'. That sold

340,000 DVD's overall, but 33,500 were on Blu-Ray.

Edited by zeus555

Thanks for the info. Didn't see Wall-E, but it's on my Christmas list too, because I heard it's great and I saw five minutes in a shop the other day and loved it (although I'm not a big Disney fan).
I can't believe Jeff Wayne was No.1 that week on the retro chart, would have been better than the awful NKOTB track. Great year.

No, can`t change it because the albums I do are combined, to include the Various Artist Compilations, and Now 71 was number 3! :D Combined Officially it was also 4, last week...beaten by Now 71, and Guns N`Roses!

It could be Boyzone out of the contenders. Would love it to be Kings Of Leon though, or Grace Jones, though clearly she doesn't stand a snowballs chance in hell...

Thanks again for a great chart Dave

Very close Robbie. During that Friday...Jeff, Linda & Aaron, and New Kids were only a hundred copies seperating. So, it was anyone`s by the Sunday. Pretty much the same, on the following week with Jive Bunny, Jason Donovan, and Soul II Soul. Of course, these were not that big sellers, compared to the early 80s! I don`t think Jive Bunny got much more than 400,000 copies altogether, on it`s run. Wasn`t it that Band Aid II, only just sneaked passed 500,000 in total?

It never made number one, at all on the MRIB list! Number 2 being the peak.
