sadly one of the major players in childrens tv for 50 years died last night. oliver postgate along with peter firmin were responsible for many traditional based kids tv programmes such as noggin the nog, ivor the engine, the clangers, bagpuss, the pogles etc etc...

imho their material was brilliant, based in the past time imagination of kids, dealing with the slightly mysterious, mythological, almost believeable worlds that kids of the past found fascinating.

their work enriched tv, enriched childrens lives and stimulated imagination.... sadly nothing today comes close to touching that area of kids imagination, he will be sadly missed but his legacy is iconic.

bizarrely enough i have a friend who was related to him :o

can't remember in what way though, haven't seen him for awhile

What a wonderful, wonderful man.

This thread DESERVES to be in the Lounge tbf. YES HE'S THAT GREAT.

Until I read his orbituary this morning I did not realise that the he was the same guy who did all these shows. I knew he did Ivor The Engine & Bagpuss. But I never knew he did the Clangers & Noggin The Nog.

As a child I loved his work, so he did his job well.

Rest In Peace.

I agree, both Firmin and Postgate together have left a great legacy, and both gave good interviews in

the various retro programmes that featured their work such as 100 Greatest Kids TV.

R.I.P. Oliver Postgate

I remember watching most of his work on TV, especially Bagpuss and The Clangers, a remarkable legend, he will be sadly missed. RIP

Must admit I didn't either. He made a fantastic contribution to childrens television. RIP.

i think bagpuss was his zenith.... set in edwardian england, so a hundered years ago now, hankering after a time gone by, where childeren were innocent. bagpuss always featured a traditional english folk song that the mice sang, fabulous! this is just about as 'retro' as a kids tv show could get! lol.

dont forget the pogles, which too played upon the countryside and kids imaginations.... were there really little people who lived in the tree base? was it possible? well no... but when youre a kid the possibility, the magic, is fascinating!

I used to love The Clangers and Noggin the Nog so this is very sad news. It fells like part of my childhood has gone :(

There's a lovely affectionate obituary in the Guardian today

There's also a reprint of an article about the state of television for children. Given that he was effectively sacked before some of the people paying tribute to him could possibly have seen any of his programmes, I think he was right. If he could see what's been written about him today he'd be very proud.

I never ever got Bagpuss. I just liked other things better.

But The Clangers was the one for me. Absolutley timeless.

RIP.

I'm sad to hear of his passing.

The animations are still utterly charming and wonderful.

My favourites are The Clangers and Bagpuss.

I have fond memories of the animation shorts.

Bagpuss included that wonderful nonsense nursey rhyme in one programme:

"The Elephant is a funny bird, it swings from bough to bough.

It builds its nest in a Rhurbarb Tree and whistles like a cow".

sounds like the lyrics from the next saturdays track!

Yeah think that BBC Four will devote an evening to him as they did have that animation series not so long ago - so there will be stuff about Postgate and smallfilms already in their archive (think smallfilms was called that as it was based in a shed - wasnt it - and i think the show showed them going back to the shed to talk about there creations - was repeated quite a lot at about 1.30am)... btw The Clangers are great - one lives in my room and makes an odd noise when you squeeze its belly!!!

my mum likes bagpuss (as well as Ivor the Engine) and was actually singing the song from the magical mechanical mouse organ the other day when she heard of the news... sounded quite goldfrapp

I totally loved The Clangers, and not just when I was a kid.... So surreal at times... Seriouly, try watching it when you're on acid or smoking a few "jazz woodbines" with some mates... Trippy as fukk..... Scottish Acid/Baggy/Indie Shoegazer/C86 band The Soup Dragons were named themselves after a character in the show, so on some level, I guess it was intended to be read as a bit trippy....

I dunno, did Postgate in some strange way, intend The Clangers to be watched by a bunch of spaced-out college students as well as kids....?

I remember Ivor The Engine and Bagpuss being on as a kid.... Loved em....

Also loved the way these guys did their shows - tiny budgets, the most basic "effects" you can imagine done with jerry-rigging gadgets together from bits of wood, metal, plastic and double sided sticky tape (probably), and all done in a garden shed "studio"..... Brilliant..... Films and TV shows today spend LOADS on CGI and SFX to achieve the sort of almost surreal and trippy qualities on The Clangers that Postgate actually managed on a 'budget' of about a fiver..... Ironic that.....
