Posted December 13, 200816 yr http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z165/Jark101/almighty-ytd.jpg So 2008 has been a mixed year if pretty decent. There's been large-scale comebacks and less successful attempts, many a brilliant single and a few classic albums too. The big question is who has been successful enough to make it onto my countdown? December 13, 200816 yr Author http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z165/Jark101/almighty-ytd2.jpg 101 Alesha Dixon Hand It Over -19.09.05.07- 4wks Kicking things off we have the fabulous miss Dixon at #101. Hand It Over, taken from her second studio album (and debut UK release) The Alesha Show, is a glorious slice of pop with a bridge showing off Alesha's MC roots and a beat reminiscent of Jamelia's Something About You. Except to see this much higher next year. 100 Anastacia I Call It Love -07.13.13.17.23- 5wks The sole representative in my YTD of her new album Heavy Rotation, I Call It Love is classic Ana with an explosive pop-rock chorus verging on anthemic. Again, given more time this would've been higher. Definitely check this out if the rubbish I Can Feel You didn't tempt you. 099 Lady GaGa Paparazzi -18.11.11.21.24- 5wks Paparazzi is packed with clever metaphors about a love affair and flashing cameras, and is one of the highlights from rising star Lady GaGa's album The Fame, already a BJ fave. Here's hoping this gem could get a release next year. 098 Chris Cornell Long Gone -04.10.08.14.25- 5wks Originally set to lead Cornelle's latest studio album, Long Gone, a passionate Timbaland-produced ballad, was sadly scrapped in favour of the inferior Scream. Still, it remains a little-known wonder which would surely appeal to the masses if given the chance. 097 Santana & Jennifer Lopez This Boy's Fire -08.13.11.17.22- 5 wks This Sean Garrett production from Santana's Greatest Hits collection was originally set to appear on Jen's 2007 record Brave but never made the cut. It's a bit of a shame given the song's brilliant latin vibe and obvious hit potential. Again, a little-known gem. 096 Solange I Decided [Freemasons Radio Edit] -17.20.19.15.21.22- 6wks I'm pretty sure my love for this song is bigger than this position suggests, but then I could say the same about a lot of the stuff above it, so here we are. Freemasons breathed magic into an otherwise-dry Neptunes-driven affair from Bey's little sis.
December 13, 200816 yr Hand It Over // It's a good song, but there's better on TAS I Call It Love // EASILY the best on Heavy Rotation  Paparazzi // 2nd in BJSC lolz :kink: Long Gone // -_- This Boy's Fire // *pretends to know what it is* *nods* I Decided // Great pop song, shame it flopped, my love for it kinda died down verrrry quickly
December 13, 200816 yr I Decided  Freemasons version is a billion times better than the original though
December 13, 200816 yr Author http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z165/Jark101/almighty-ytd3.jpg 95 Delta Goodrem You Will Only Break My Heart -10.12.X.20.17- 4wks This song, and third single, from Delta's self-titled third album split the fans somewhat, being her trendiest, most youthful release arguably to-date, sporting bopping production. It had the potential to dominate the airwaves in Summer but sadly a combo of poor promotion and a rubbish music video saw it miss the Top 10, a first for poor Delta. Still, great, uplifting pop songs. 94 P!nk It's All Your Fault -13.17.19.13.19- 5wks The first of five Funhouse numbers in here, It's All Your Fault sees P!nk re-explore the heavier rocky pop of 2003's Last To Know. It's a beautiful song display anger and sadness fairly equally. Something about the verse always reminds me of Abba for some truly odd reason... 93 Natalie Bassingthwaighte Alive -09.03.10.24.25.23- 6wks Alive is Nat Bass' debut solo single after she heart-breakingly left the wonderful Rogue Traders earlier this year. I remember reading James Ash' post on the RT's forum about how Natalie was leaving but there were no hard feelings and they'd loved every minute; I think I cried. LOL. She's a true performer and this is a simple electropop song with a big, buzzy chorus. 92 Jennifer Hudson All Dressed In Love -15.02.09.24- 4wks This summertime confection was featured in the Sex & The City movie and I suspect it probably did Jen's profile a whole lot of good on both sides of the Atlantic; audiences seemed to be waiting for something they could lap up from her. This reached the Top 60 on downloads-alone but it was later hit Spotlight which really did the business; that's coming up in a bizzle. 91 Donna Summer Fame (The Game) -10.10.11.14- 4 wks A rollercoaster ride through the highs and lows of showbusiness, Fame (The Game), a highlight of Donna's long-awaited comeback album, lets the world know Summer can still hack it with the Rihannas and Beyonces of this world. This is highly-enjoyable stuff; the lyrics always make me smile.
December 13, 200816 yr I'll save us all trouble and say DONNA AND P!NK FOREVER. Rest, not so much :kink:
December 14, 200816 yr 101 Alesha Dixon Hand It Over Haven't heard it. 100 Anastacia I Call It Love By far one of the best tracks on HR, hopefully it'll be released next year. 099 Lady GaGa Paparazzi Don't rate Lady GaGa that much tbh. 098 Chris Cornell Long Gone I really cannot stand this. 097 Santana & Jennifer Lopez This Boy's Fire Don't know this, but Santana is amazing! Will have to check this out. 096 Solange I Decided [Freemasons Radio Edit] Like this alot. :D She's so much like Beyonce tho! 95 Delta Goodrem You Will Only Break My Heart Never heard it. 94 P!nk It's All Your Fault This is a good one, (Bad influence tho is alot better :kink: ) --- Decides to just comment on songs I know ---
December 14, 200816 yr Author http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z165/Jark101/almighty-ytd4.jpg 90 Keane Spiralling -07.03.10.18- 4wks This was something of a surprise! Keane's 'buzz single' turned out to be a stomping electropop number filled with 'woo!'s and I'm more than a bit partial to a 'woo!' in a pop song. The chorus is pretty anthemic too. It's a shame nothing else they've ever done even comes close! 89 Ashlee Simpson Outta My Head -15.12.11.12- 4wks Ashlee's floppy comeback single got old pretty quickly but for a time the Timbaland production and instant melody made the song a favourite of mine. However US-only single Little Miss Obsessive is much superior; that'll appear later. 88 Danity Kane Bad Girl -01.01.06.20- 4wks Another which got old quickly, Bad Girl features Missy Elliot on what must be one of the few decent supporting raps she's done of late; 'bad gurls are yalls up in hurrr?' - brilliance! Danity Kane are fairly generic but this is a fun ditty. 87 Santogold L.E.S. Artistes -12.16.16.17.X.06- 5wks This is a little more credible! Santogold has written hits for many a mainstream popstar (including Ashlee Simpson!) but her own debut single features a building beat and an explosive chorus. This had the potential to really cross over and the fact that it remained something of a sleeper hit without ever really going 'big' is a bit sad. Oh well. 86 Miley Cyrus Fly On The Wall -19.17.15.12.22.X.12.20.25- 8 wks Fly is a fabulous electropop stormer from Miley which is short and very sweet. It's the sort of instant, brilliant pop song which has the power to convert the haters round to liking la Cyrus, and that is no easy task! Love it.
December 14, 200816 yr Author http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z165/Jark101/almighty-ytd5.jpg 85 P!nk Sober -20.17.17.15.23.X.19.15- 7wks I first charted Sober when we had HQ audio from P!nk's promo tour, before the album release. Then when the album leaked and I heard the CDQ version I was fairly underwhelmed; I thought the production sounded cheap and the song sounded less epic than when it was live. I'm not sure what's changed but I've really adjusted to it now, and I love it all over again. There's better on the album (as you'll see later in my countdown) but this is a brilliant, emotional song which ranks amongst P!nk's best singles. 84 Alesha Dixon Colours of the Rainbow -05.05.12.22- 4wks Scandalously (ha) only a free bonus song with her album The Alesha Show, Colours is a typical Soulshock & Karlin number, all subtly bleeping electro production and smooth vocals. I like to imagine too that Alesha really does think the rainbow is made up of red, white, gold and blue. 83 Mariah Carey 4Real 4Real ft.Da Brat -11.04.17.19- 4wks Another bonus song here, this time for Mimi's underperforming E=MC2. Whilst that album was a fairly mixed bag this is a solid R&B slowjam harking back to the 90s, all light vocals and floaty backing music. 'Hotter than cable TV, like something outta your dream' is a bloody cute lyric too. SO mimi. 82 Britney Spears Break the Ice -19.17.13.09.13- 5wks Whilst I think Break the Ice was by far Britney's worst single since the third album era, she has a high standard of releases and it's still a decent song; importantly though it had a brilliant remix package with radio- and club-friendly mixes from Funk Generation, Kaskade and especially Tracy Young really turning a good song into a great one. Shame about that turd of a video! 81 Girls Aloud The Promise -24.21.08.07.08.10.21- 7 wks It took me a while to really get into GA's 'comeback' single, and to adjust to them going all retro. And to THAT vocal from Sarah. But I did eventually realise this was a really solid single with a truly brilliant chorus and intro especially.
December 15, 200816 yr I absolutely adore 'Sober' and 'Break The Ice'! Can't say the same for 'The Promise' though :puke:
