Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne has revealed that he thinks Oasis and Arctic Monkeys are too British for American audiences.

The rocker said that he believes both bands are too much of an acquired taste to be accepted across the Atlantic.

"I've never got Arctic Monkeys, they seem too much like a British thing to me. They're like Oasis whereby Americans can't really relate to them," he told the Daily Star.

"Lots of British people like it but not for me, and I don't like Razorlight or Duffy much either."

However, the frontman added that he does like some British acts, saying: "I prefer Radiohead, they deserve to win a Grammy. And I'm still a fan of Amy Winehouse but hope she doesn't become too much of a drug addict."

Well that's a bit late isn't it?!

I don't really seem that they're any more British than say, Coldplay, who've had great success over in the USA, especially this year

The ironic thing is Arctic Monkeys are quoye popular Stateside. Favourite Worst Nightmare peaked at #7, and whilst it fell pretty sharpish, it shows that they've got a market out there. Ofc they'll never be huge, but how many British acts are at the moment? Leona, Coldplay, Wino and Radiohead. Not many at all

And Oasis' latest album peaked at #5 over there so I don't know what he's on about! Duffy and Adele have done quite well stateside as well!

Anyway British is better and the best british band to never break America (Blur) probably never did because they were 'too british'

he probably means that AM are not stupid enough to sound like a mediocre american band that usually sell millions there...

he could also say "They're like queens of the stone age whereby Americans can't really relate to them..." ...well?

Is their such thing as 'Britishness' any more though? In fact, I think it's impossible to be too british.

arctic monkeys are very british which is why i like them. the difference between them and say....coldplay or amy whinehouse is that their accent is more pronounced in their music and they are inclined to use more of the british slang phrases. people who i have introduced them to have said they remind them of the beatles. they aren't really rock n roll or alternative or country or pop or r&b which is the type of music that gets the most play here.

and mainstream music here is pretty sucky in my opinion.

I've heard a few Americans who have said pretty much exactly the same thing in relation to the Arctic Monkeys and why they like them. I think for the overseas market they're an aquired taste - not everyone's going to like them, and I think a lot of people might be put off by their overly British and slang tone, but at the same time I think this adds appeal to them for some people.
