Does anyone know who has written or co-written the most number 1 singles in the Uk?

A list of the top 10 would be great if anyone has them.

I read somewhere it's Ray Davis of the Kinks, but whether that was just top hits or #1 I'm not sure.

I'm assuming you're asking because Mel C is supposed to be one of them. She's co-written 11 #1 singles, 9 in the Spice Girls and 2 from her solo career. Geri must be up there too as 'Spice Girls' have writing credits on all of their #1 singles and she featured on 7 of them and had 4 of her own #1s, though one was a cover and I don't know how much writing Geri did for her solo career.

I think Lennon or McCartney would be at the top with their #1s in the Beatles and as solo artists.

if it's not Paul McCartney at #1 I'll eat everyone's hat. John Lennon will be #2.
it is indeed Paul McCartney and John Lennon, between them they have wrote over 20 number ones. John Lennon has wrote or co-wrote the most, 24 to be exact, with Paul McCartney on 23.

The most successful songwriters in terms of number one singles are John Lennon (1940-80) and Paul McCartney (born in 1942). They co-wrote 23 US No 1 singles. McCartney is credited as the writer on a total of 32 number one hits in the US to Lennon's 26, whereas Lennon authored 30 UK number ones to McCartney's 29 (25 co-written).

Due to a songwriting agreement the pair struck up before they were famous, all their Beatles related songs would be classified as co-written even though on most occasions especially towards the end of the group they nearly always wrote separately.

So of their 26 co written #1s

(17 were by The Beatles):

1963 From Me To You (co-written)

1963 She Loves You (co-written)

1963 I Wanna Hold Your Hand (co-written)

1964 A Hard Days Night (John)

1964 I Feel Fine (John)

1965 Ticket To Ride (John)

1965 Help! (John)

1965 Day Tripper (John) / We Can Work It Out (Paul)

1966 Paperback Writer (Paul)

1966 Yellow Submarine (co-written) / Eleanor Rigby (Paul)

1967 All You Need Is Love (John)

1967 Hello Goodbye (Paul)

1968 Lady Madonna (Paul)

1968 Hey Jude (Paul)

1969 Get Back (Paul)

1969 Ballad Of John & Yoko (John)

(& 9 were passed on to other artists / covers):

1963 Bad To Me (Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas) (Penned by John)

1964 A World Without Love (Peter & Gordon) (Penned by Paul)

Post Beatles:

1981 Imagine

1981 Woman

1981 Jealous Guy (Roxt Music cover)

All 4 of John's solo penned tracks came after his murder on Dec 8th 1980.

Paul McCartney:

1977 Mull Of Kintyre / Girls School

1982 Ebony & Ivory (duet with Stevie Wonder)

1984 Pipes Of Peace

Thisispop - shouldn't 'Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da', by Marmalade, be there?

It was on The Beatles 'White Album', (1968). They released the Single

themselves in some Countries, but in the UK Marmalade had a January 1969

No.1 with it. 1 run of 1 Week, & 1 run of 2 Weeks.

I read somewhere Mel C is 2nd but cant remember whos 1st

Well given the above information she clearly isn't.

You are right.

I've corrected my original post as I knew their total number of #1 songs and worked backwards to locate the songs to match the totals but I included Billy J Kramer's Little Children in error as a Lennon/McCartney song. To be fair to me it is wishful thinking I forgot Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da as personally I think it is Paul at his throwaway tune with the first lyrics that come into my head worst.

Cathy Dennis has had a small few, produced Kylie's Can't Get You...

Does it count if the same song goes to #1 twice?
