January 8, 200916 yr Big name would be really good, but please someone who can act. Billie had acting experience so that's why she was cast, Lily or Rachel no no thanks... The Assistant needs to be someone with the requisite experience and talent (which rules Michelle Ryan and Lily Allen out... ) to make up for Matt Smith's lack of 'lead TV role' experience.... Do people not read?! : Why have people got a problem with Lily Allen? After all at public school she excelled at acting far more than music until her music teacher noticed her talent for writing lyrics. As a 13 year old she was in the Oscar winning British costume drama Elizabeth (starring Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Christopher Eccleston, Joseph Fiennes, Richard Attenborough, John Gielgud, Kathy Burke & Eric Cantona) & she'd earlier appeared in a couple of Comic Strip Presents, and has always expressed an interest to go back to acting especially when her music career "flops". Whilst her father Keith Allen is a rather fine comedy dramatic actor/writer; her mum Alison Owen is an English film producer most famous for 2004's Shaun Of The Dead; her stepdad is comedian actor Harry Enfield & her younger brother Alfie Owen-Allen is building up a respectable acting career. Therefore her pedigree does not appear too different to that of Billie Piper before she got the Doctor Who assistant role, and look how that turned out. ..... Anyway I hope Carey Mulligan gets the gig.
January 8, 200916 yr Do people not read?! : So she was "good at school" and has been in one or two things as a teenager. Hardly acting experience... I can read btw ;)
January 8, 200916 yr ^^ I just didn't want people to ignore TiP's post, it seemed people were posting the same things before and after his post, when he said that Lily has got some acting experience after all. Didn't mean to come over rude, but this what it may have looked like :(
January 8, 200916 yr I think people would judge Lilly Allen on what they know her for (which is her singing) just like it was with Billie Piper. I really don't think they'll go with Lilly Allen as the companion though. I do think they'll go for a high profile name, but just not Lilly Allen... I really don't think Matt Smith is going to be a bad choice either. Moffat is no idiot, and it's already grating on me loads. People don't even have any ground to criticise him on yet. :| At leats wait till he's been in an episode.
January 11, 200916 yr Author I really don't think Matt Smith is going to be a bad choice either. Moffat is no idiot, and it's already grating on me loads. People don't even have any ground to criticise him on yet. :| At leats wait till he's been in an episode. New Zealand's national newspaper seems to think a native-born actress female (who has already acted in a couple of shows written by Steven Moffat) 16 years the senior of Matt Smith could be getting the role. I for one would be ecstatically pleased.
January 11, 200916 yr Even if Lily can act they would turn her into a similar character to Donna. Didn't everyone say Catherine Tate was a brilliant actress? I did see glimmers of it in the series but the majority of it was comedy and verging on 'The Nana' character from her sketch show. I don't mind having some humour in the show, It just needs a good balance and atm its becoming cringeworthy. I'm just preying the new team will get back to the great episode standard such as 'Doomsday' and 'Blink'

I agree, I'm sure Matt will be a great choice, I'm yet to be disappointed by a 'Doctor' just hoping there is a great partner like Billie or Freema
January 11, 200916 yr Pretty much how I feel tbh.... Tamsin Greig would be good (in fact, she'd've been a bloody good Doctor if you ask me...), although a "comedy actress" on the face of it, she's not exactly unfamiliar with the more serious side of acting, and anyway, stuff she was in like "Green Wing" had a certain "nervousness" and darkness within the humour... I'm seriously beginning to worry about this show now... I mean, the choice for the new Doctor is either going to work extremely well or it's going to be the worst acting disaster since George Lazenby took over from Sean Connery as Bond..... The Assistant needs to be someone with the requisite experience and talent (which rules Michelle Ryan and Lily Allen out... ) to make up for Matt Smith's lack of 'lead TV role' experience.... So, in saying this, I go for Greig, or Gina Bellman (who played "Mrs Jackman/Hyde" in the excellent "Jekyll" series), or, if they could get her, Tilda Swinton..... Did you see Tamsin Greig in the Anne Frank series last week? She was excellent as Anne's mother in what was about as far from a comedy role as you can get.
January 13, 200916 yr So she was "good at school" and has been in one or two things as a teenager. Hardly acting experience... I can read btw ;) Exactly my thoughts..... So sorry if I blinked and missed Lily Allen in "Elizabeth", I was a just a bit more focussed on the REAL actors in that film playing the BIG roles, ie, Cate Blanchett, Joe Fiennes, Geoffrey Rush and Chris Eccleston, etc..... Same goes for Comic Strip presents stuff, yeah, I'm really gonna be watching out for her when French, Saunders, Rik, Ade, Pete Richardson, Nige Planer, Robbie Coltrane, etc, etc are all strutting their hugely talented stuff innit... Oh, just cos she's "daddy's girl" and got a walk-on part or summat to keep her amused.... Fukk off.....  And besides, I was talking about "experience", as in, "experience of playing BIG roles"... Er, has Lily Allen played a major role on film or telly....? Ever.....? As for Michelle Ryan... Er, well, she got her chance with "Bionic Woman" and TOTALLY failed to impress, being outshone by the supporting cast, especially the far more expressive Katee Sackhoff who just ripped her a new one every time she appeared opposite Ryan...... Hell, I'd pick Sackhoff to be the Assistant LONG before even considering Ryan or Lily..... Billie Piper got pretty lucky with that Dr Who gig tbh, and she was opposite two extremely capable and experiences screen actors (Eccleston and Tenant) which probably helped her.... She's been pretty dreadful in most things she's done since.... "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" is just utter cack, and I saw a very unscary "horror" film she was in, Spirit Trap, oh dear...... Wasn't too impressed by her in the Sally Lockhart thing either tbh.....
January 13, 200916 yr Did you see Tamsin Greig in the Anne Frank series last week? She was excellent as Anne's mother in what was about as far from a comedy role as you can get. Absolutely.... Anyone who can do turns in stuff like Black Books, Green Wing and Anne Frank and do them all as utterly convincingly as she did deserves a shot at something huge IMO..... And, as far as UK telly goes, it dont get much bigger than Dr Who...... She'd make a damn fine DOCTOR, never mind a mere "assistant", she has the manic qualities as Fran in Black Books and the utter seriousness she displayed in Ann Frank.... But, we all seem to be forgetting one very important thing.... Er, Alex Kingston anyone.....? In the "Silence in the Library" two-parter.....? Making references to a relationship with a future Doctor....?
January 13, 200916 yr I agree, I'm sure Matt will be a great choice, I'm yet to be disappointed by a 'Doctor' Hmmm, you obviously never saw Peter Davison then..... A VERY big disappointment he was IMO, particularly as he had to follow on from Tom Baker...... Not an easy task for anyone let alone a 28-year old actor, and Davison had more telly experience with the much loved "All Creatures Great and Small" than Smith does..... I've got a very bad feeling history is going to repeat here... A young, relatively inexperienced actor following on from an actor who basically OWNED the character, and rather paling by comparison.... Oh dear......

January 13, 200916 yr colin was the begining of the end imho... Bonnie fukkin' Langford was the beginning of the end more like.....  Sylvester McCoy had his moments (esp. stuff like Curse of Fenric and Ghost Light), and also had one of the best Assistants of all time - Ace.....

I agree. Plus one entire Colin Baker series spent with his Doctor on trial by the Timelords on Gallifrey was about as welcome as a Progressive Rock album played at a Punk/New Wave disco. Anyway look what I found on youtube... l-vSRtFRD3M Dr Who: The 4th & 5th Regenerations (Tom Baker - Peter Davidson - Colin Baker)
January 13, 200916 yr I was expecting to see some news about the companion when I clicked in here, not a debate about the Doctor himself :snif: ANYWAY I have some 'news' on that front. Take it with a BAG of salt. Somebody on another forum I use posted this: my housemate is Facebook friends with the girl who played Darlene Cake in Bad Girls, and her status the other week was that she is the next Doctor Who companion. YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST I can only IMAGINE how ridiculous and yet wonderful this would be. The actress' name is Antonia Okonma: http://www1.pictures.gi.zimbio.com/TV%20Quick%20And%20TV%20Choice%20Awards%201O_Ke1npX4Ml.jpg http://www4.pictures.gi.zimbio.com/Talladega%20Nights%20Ballad%20Ricky%20Bobby%20UK%20Premiere%20mC_AQ7A_RrLl.jpg I doubt this'll turn out true since presumably she wouldn't be allowed to post about being cast until BBC announced it and because she looks more than a little bit like Freema :heehee:
