Posted January 7, 200916 yr For me BuzzJack is all about discovering new music first so I thought this very interesting title from the BBC would be worth a post for those of you who think similarly (for the rest of you, I'm afraid there's no mention of The Saturdays here :heehee: ) So 'What is this award I hear you all cry?' well the BBC has even written a quick explanation for you! WHAT IS SOUND OF 2009? - 130+ UK music tastemakers named their favourite three new acts - Responses counted and compiled into a list of the brightest new stars - Longlist of 15 published in December, the top 10 and winner to be named in early January Check out the website for more info: Sound of 2009 Last year Duffy and Adele were placed at the top of the table and the Ting Tings also featured so this award has been able to pick out some big artists in the past, let's hope it is right again this year. Cool stuff so let's get down to the music - Here are the 15 shortlisted artists: The Big Pink Big single: 'Too Young To Love' These are a very cool though not necessarily maintstream duo which mix some huge sounds together with streaming vocals. Definately worth a listen for a really deep musical sound. My rating: 7/10 The Big Pink's Myspace Dan Black Big Single: 'Yours' Not quite a unique and new sound but an indie inspired electro artist who uses beats to liven up his music along with interesting vocals. My rating: 6/10 Dan Black's Myspace VV Brown Big Single: 'Crying Blood' The first former BJSC entry of 6 in this list, VV Brown has a real old skool sound which grabs a hold of you and keeps your foot pumping throughout. Should have been a hit in 2008 but deserves another crack at it this year. My rating 8/10 VV Brown's Myspace Empire of the Sun Big Single: 'Walking On A Dream' Totally out there, MGMT inspired electro-pop outfit who may get noticed more for there appearence than their music at first. Apparently they're big down-under and I think they could have a couple of radio hits here too. My rating 9/10 Empire of the Sun's Myspace Florence and the Machine Big Single: 'Dog Days Are Over' Winner of this year's Critic's Choice Award at the BRITs, Florence's commanding vocals mean that once you've heard one of her tracks you won't be forgetting it any time soon. Think Kate Nash after a few vodka Red Bulls, you may recognise her for 'Kiss With A Fist' used to launch 4Music early last year. My rating 10/10 Forence and the Machine's Myspace Frankmusik Big Single: 'Three Little Words' Supporting Keane on tour throughout Spring, Frankmusik are going to hit the radio stations hard this year with his pure 80s electro-pop will remind you of Alphabeat with a little less cheese but a lot more bouncing. My rating 10/10 Frankmusik's Myspace Kid Cudi Big Single: 'Day and Nite' Picked up by Kanye West, Cudi is already gaining huge publicity with plays on Radio1. Not entirely hip-hop he brings some dance beats into his tracks to gain widespread appeal. My rating 6/10 Kid Cudi's Myspace La Roux Big Single: 'Quicksand' BJSC XII winner, La Roux has already gained the attention of DJs such as Annie Mac and this girl has got attitude. Inspired by 80's pop music La Roux have launched an attack on modern pop music, indie groups and anyone with a guitar. She may get up a few people's noses but with an epic electro sound she'll be big in 09 whatever. My rating 9/10 La Roux's Myspace Lady Gaga Big Single: 'Let's Dance' Needs no introduction. Lady Gaga took over the American, Australian, Canadian and European music and is leading the way in '09 with her electro-pop mix look out for future singles 'Poker Face' from her debut album 'The Fame'. My rating 10/10 Lady Gaga's Myspace Little Boots Big Single: 'Meddle' Another british electro-pop artist but with her own quirks such as her crazy 80's inspired instruments used together with her piano. Check out 'Stuck on Repeat' too and you'll get a great idea of her great potential. My rating 9/10 Little Boots' Myspace Master Shortie Big Single: 'Dead End' Last year we had Wiley, this year we have Master Shortie. He will be the big british hip-hops artist mixing great beats and vocals with his honest rapping. My rating 8/10 Master Shortie's Myspace Mumford & Sons Big Single: 'Feel the Tide' From the same school of thought as Noah and the Whale and Jack Penate, Mumford and Sons play a banjo - What more do you need to know!? Really though their brilliantly simple but moving songs are irresistably brilliant. My rating 10/10 Mumford and Sons' Myspace Passion Pit Big Single: 'Sleepyhead' Another MGMT inspired band is extremely colourful and creates some amazing sounds with high pitched vocal sampling on top of a catchy bass. My rating: 8/10 Passion Pit's Myspace The Temper Trap Big Single: 'Sweet Disposition' Beautiful first single, they mix soft guitars with atmospheric vocals to create an amazing album which will be pounced on by less mainstream radio DJs. My rating 8/10 The Temper Trap's Myspace White Lies Big Single: 'To Lose My Life' More predictable sound which reminds me of Morrisey or Editors with a very powerful male vocal across huge guitars. Though not necessarily anything new the still produce brilliant music. My rating 9/10 Edited January 10, 200916 yr by tombliboo
January 7, 200916 yr Lady GaGa is obviously my favourite, but I adore VV Brown too. Not too sure bout the others yet.

January 8, 200916 yr Author The top five have been revealed this week day by day and tomorrow we find out who's number one! But for now, here's the run down of five to two: 05. La Roux 04. Empire of the Sun 03. Florence and the Machine 02. White Lies It'll be interesting to see if they go for the obvious Lady Gaga for number one or maybe pick one of the real unknowns :w00t:
January 9, 200916 yr I think Lady GaGa is the least obvious candidate for #1. Well not quite, but I never for one moment thought she'd win it (or still win it). It will be Little Boots imo.

January 10, 200916 yr good top ten, great to see Dan Black scraped in there... I'm not surprised that Frankmusik didn't make it...as good as he is, I just can't see him having top ten singles :(
January 10, 200916 yr I second that, I've been watching the ones I don't know, my favourite so far is Empire Of The Sun  like Daft Punk meets MGMT
January 10, 200916 yr Author S'alright ^_^ - Perfect oppertunity to plug my chart which also features videos from great unknown artists  I was most disappointed not to see Frankmusik in the top ten (actually when they announced 5 to 2 I was sure he was number 1) but I really do believe 3 Little Words will be a huge hit - easily top ten imo as long as it gets the airplay Edited January 10, 200916 yr by tombliboo
