I have been starting to give Norway more attention this year due to their unusually high quota of successful artists last year (Madcon, Ida Maria, Maria Haukaas Storeng)...

here are the 21 songs confirmed as semi-finalists in their national final, Melodi Grand Prix and at least half of them would make fantastic entries, some of them are incredibly contemporary and not usual ESC-fare, which in my opinion is a good thing:

Surferosa - U look good

Chicas del Coro - Men men men

Kesera - Party

Espen Hana - Two of a kind

Charite - Sweeter than a kiss

Thomas Brøndbo - Det vart en storm

Velvet - Tricky

Wenche Myhre - Alt har en mening nå

Publiners - Te stein

Wulff - Ride

Alexander Stensrud - Find my girl

Janni Santillan - (Like you did) Yesterday

Julius Winger - Like an angel

Tone Damli Aaberge - Butterflies

Sichelle - Left right

Rebelettes - Soul train

Ovi - Seven Seconds

Jane Helen - Shuffled

Foxy - Do it again

Sunny - Carrie

Alexander Rybak - Fairytale

and my inevitable opening thoughts on each song:

Surferosa - U look good // pop/rock, a bit Veronicas-Secret Life Of era style, could be a grower // 8/10

Chicas del Coro - Men men men // swing, American influenced, very cheesy big band sort of song, sounds christmassy at times, infectious // 7/10

Kesera - Party // Norwegian sung dance/rap crossover, very very catchy hook, even if it is in Norwegian // 8/10

Espen Hana - Two of a kind // hmm...sounds like Norway's token respectable slow male song, quite pleasant if a bit Tony Christie at times // 7/10

Charite - Sweeter than a kiss // old school Eurovision, think 2000 era, but very catchy, I love it, it's just a tad dated to do anything in the contest // 9/10

Thomas Brøndbo - Det vart en storm // likely to finish last? no real hook in the melody or lyrics...would be a nul pointer if picked // 1/10

Velvet - Tricky // not the Swedish Velvet, but a band...electropop, very 2009 but not the best song here // 8/10

Wenche Myhre - Alt har en mening nå // if Charite's old-skool ESC this is pre-school, sounds like a Norwegian Save Your Kisses For Me. Catchy though // 7/10

Publiners - Te stein // Norwegian folky rock, wouldn't light up the scoreboard at all but it has a nice hook in the chorus // 8/10

Wulff - Ride // country piano-pop, wouldn't work as it's not instant at all...quite nice but nothing more // 6/10

Alexander Stensrud - Find my girl // slow piano ballad transforms to Hi-NRG Europop-dance...more Swedish than Norwegian, not bad // 7/10

Janni Santillan - (Like you did) Yesterday // pleasant female pop with Say It Right beats in the background // 8/10

Julius Winger - Like an angel // mid-tempo male pop/rock, I actually love this but it would do nothing at all in ESC // 9/10

Tone Damli Aaberge - Butterflies // surely one of the front runners, like Release Me crossed with 7th Wonder crossed with. Amazing // 10/10

Sichelle - Left right // Norwegian R&B, another one that sounds Timbaland/Rihanna/Chris Brown influenced...great, very contemporary // 9/10

Rebelettes - Soul train // very Motown, not really liking this one much though // 4/10

Ovi - Seven Seconds // drivetime style pop/rock...nice chorus though but would be another 2004 scenario for Norway if sent // 7/10

Jane Helen - Shuffled // shouty female metal-lite, awful // 1/10

Foxy - Do it again // sounds like B*Witched meets The Veronicas meets Cookie, actual pop perfection though // 10/10

Sunny - Carrie // nice pop song, nothing amazing but definitely a grower...quite dated sounding though // 7/10

Alexander Rybak - Fairytale // I believe this is a favourite...is oddly contemporary folkish in a way that Christine Alvendansen never managed (even though she was fantastic)...this is the sort of thing Ireland should be sending if they wanted to be a force to be reckoned with...could actually give Norway a second top ten finish in a row // 10/10

overall // they need to go with either Alexander Rybak, Tone Damli Aaberge or Foxy, the first two probably have a fair chance to go through and both could quite easily go top five in the final

Oooof, just over a month until I find out which one I can use in the BJSC :kink:

Oh crap! :arrr:

Peter already wants Foxy (so did I ) and I want either Alexander or Tone

I'm surprised you didn't ban Melodi Grand Prix :o

I am too in retrospect! This is most inconvenient for me :(

oh well, cue a flood of MGP entries from Rontvia in the coming months :kink:

and Melodifestivalen semi-finalists of course :o

Alexander could finally be Rontvia's male entry that does well, although it's doubtful it will have a chance as it has MGP winner written all over it

I wouldn't really have thought Alexander would be that much of a BJSC-friendly song...

And Melodifestivalen semi-finalists are allowed?! Whaa?!

I suppose you're right, I'm alone in my love for Nordic traditional influenced pop

I think it's only the 10 that get to the final of MF that are banned from the BJSC, so the other 22 are open to send

I could have sent One Love or Love In Stereo!

Alexander isn't my thing TBH! Not too bad I guess ;)

Tone is STUNNING  Song's OK too, better than Alexander.

FOXY! Surely a Top 5 guarantee for BJSC??? :o

  • Author
I knew you'd love Foxy Jonjo :P I agree that it is a certain BJSC top 5! I recommend you to youtube some of the ones not in my sig too, you might be pleasantly surprised :D

Oh great thanks Rich

It's exhausting having to protect BJSC acts you know :(

Ask Phil! :heehee:

I'll probably be bored stiff of the songs by the time they are eligible for BJSC and won't end up using any of them :P

but at least it finally gives us something to talk about in this forum! There was no way in hell you'd have been able to cover up songs this good until March :heehee:

No, all of the MF entries are forbidden :P

oh, I thought it was only the finalists :o never mind, I'll just have to send album tracks by the MF participants like I did last year :P

It's the best song there. I love Norwegian music. And I agree about the Ireland point. The sound is quite similar in some ways.

Norwegians, vote for Rybak!

I know who Alexandra Rybak reminds me of :heehee:

For some reason he reminds me of R-Wayne form BGTPFAPASSSOI :kink:

I didn't like R-Wayne and I am not keen on Rybak either to be honest

What I think SO FAR...

Thomas Brøndbo - Det vart en storm 7/10 - The best Male song from what I've heard so far.

Wenche Myhre - Alt har en mening nå 4/10 - Completely Forgettable.

Alexander Stensrud - Find my girl 6/10 - Not too fussed on this TBH

Julius Winger - Like an angel 5/10 - COMPLETELY Average IMO

Tone Damli Aaberge - Butterflies 10/10 - Really good. I THINK I prefer Foxy a little, but it's a close second at the moment.

Sichelle - Left right 9/10 - Think Rihanna crossed with a little Mariah

Foxy - Do it again 10/10 - FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC!

Sunny - Carrie 8/10 - This is good. I like it quite a bit actually. Probably more of a grower though...

Alexander Rybak - Fairytale 6/10 - Really don't see the fuss TBH :nocheer:

Janni Santillan - (Like you did) Yesterday 9/10 - I REALLY Like this, but it is sooo not Eurovision.

Wulff - Ride 5/10 - Forgettable and definately not for Eurovision.

Ovi - Seven Seconds 8/10 - I really like this. It's my favourite Male only song so far...

Jane Helen - Shuffled 2/10 - OH GOD  The chorus is such a massive let down, honestly this song could get started in the Metal forum :puke:

Rebelettes - Soul train 6/10 - Exactly how I imagined it to be! Quite Meh...

Publiners - Te stein 4/10 - I've already forgot how this goes

Velvet - Tricky 8/10 - This could actually be quite a hit. I reckon with a decent remix, it would be big.

Chicas del Coro - Men men men 3/10 - Oh dear, this is RUBBISH! :puke:

Kesera - Party 7/10 - I like this. Quite decent, and is another one that could very well become quite a decent hit.

Charite - Sweeter than a kiss 9/10 - This is a really good pop song, I don't think it's got the Eurovision Ooompf it needs to do well, but I like this... Muchly.

Espen Hana - Two of a kind 6/10 - Decent, but forgettable.

Surferosa - U look good 9/10 - "I saw you in the Dark, Oh What a Shock"

My fave 5:

- Foxy - Do it again

- Tone Damli Aaberge - Butterflies

- Sichelle - Left right

- Charite - Sweeter than a kiss

- Surferosa - U look good

Edited by Jonjo

I'm excited! :o Going to download MGP now :kink:

nice to see your thoughts Jonjo :D generally you've picked out the same songs as me as your faves, except I do love Alexander Rybak

I totally love Fairytale. It has some folk motives, I can't help falling in love with this kind of a song. Like They Can't Stop The Spring

Fairytale has the ESC-cliche ending i noticed  Like They Can't Stop The Spring again :o
