January 17, 200916 yr Impressive that Rihanna and Duffy sold over a million singles in 2008. How on earth did Céline Dion end up as the 16th biggest album act of 2008? :o
January 17, 200916 yr 33 (-) Michael Jackson – 413,028 34 (-) Mariah Carey – 406,493 35 (-) Oasis – 386,776 These are particularly surprising. Michael must sell lots of songs in low amounts, he's only had 'Thriller' and maybe one of his 'Thriller 25' singles in the top 40 this year hasn't he? Mariah has done well to sell 400k singles as well considering 'Touch My Body' must have done about 100k and the other three songs she's released would have sold peanuts. Oasis have only had two McFlyish singles too.
January 18, 200916 yr as soon as I clicked onto this thread I knew Rihanna would be at the top  the fact that she and Leona are always top 5 shows what consistent hitmakers they are
January 18, 200916 yr :cheer: Will best selling British male solo album artist. :cheer: Edited January 18, 200916 yr by truly talented
January 18, 200916 yr Best Selling Single Artists 2008 (last year's position in brackets) 5 (20) Girls Aloud 876,050 Best Selling Album Artists 2008 (last year's position in brackets) 8 (38) Girls Aloud – 972,672 OMG what a brillant year for GA ! :o  Over 1.8 millions albums and singles sold in 2008 :o
January 18, 200916 yr :cheer: Will best selling British solo album artist. :cheer: You might want to add male to that post. :) The Top 5 singles are all female, albums are female or groups. It seems the only way forward for a UK male singer is to join a group or duet with a female singer a la James Morrison. :D

It seems the only way forward for a UK male singer is to join a group or duet with a female singer a la James Morrison. :D That's what I meant, I've corrected it now. & without the help of any American female. :) It's definitely a female dominated music scene at the moment but the market is becoming saturated & I'm sure in time there will be a change. Will be interesting to see if this years touted 'best new things' are still around in a few years time or replaced by the next lot off the conveyor belt. January 18, 200916 yr ^ Because they haven't released an album last year  How on earth did The Killers get to #26 in the singles in 2007? They had two #15 singles didn't they?
January 18, 200916 yr ^ Because they haven't released an album last year  How on earth did The Killers get to #26 in the singles in 2007? They had two #15 singles didn't they? They probably sold their back catalogue too - this is all the albums/singles sold last year - not just current stuff. Same with Celine Dion. And going by those figures Will has sold around 50K of his back catalogue of albums over the past year. They don't have to be in the chart to sell. Edited January 18, 200916 yr by munchkin
January 18, 200916 yr ^ Because they haven't released an album last year  How on earth did The Killers get to #26 in the singles in 2007? They had two #15 singles didn't they? I think Mr. Brightside still had very healthy sales in 2007, as well as Somebody Told Me. Those two must've helped a lot.
January 18, 200916 yr In terms of Mariah you have to factor in All I Want For Christmas sales from both ends of the year (assuming this is a true Jan 1 to Dec 31 (or so) year)).
January 19, 200916 yr How on earth did Céline Dion end up as the 16th biggest album act of 2008? :o Celine will have 3 albums in the end of year Top 200. Who thought that she'd stopped selling albums ? :) Edited January 19, 200916 yr by Dave B
January 21, 200916 yr how did Michael Jackson manage to sell 413,028 singles this year??? It's amazing....
January 22, 200916 yr I think its quite amazing how acts like Abba and Queen can still sell over 250,000 singles considering no new material in decades
