youve proved my point, thanks  , i KNOW robbie is the biggest prick in pop music, but he can get away with it because he has some kinda charismatic charm...something 'headupthearse' chris martin doesnt which makes his egotistical claims so bloody obnoxious!

Agreed. Chris Martin has ZERO charisma.... There is just no glamour, coolness, heart, guts or air of mystery about Coldplay at all, and, I'm sorry, but a good rock or pop group really has to have a combination of or all of those in order to lift my metaphorical skirt... It really does just sound like a bunch of accountants or estate agents in a recording studio.....

Actually, that could be a possible new genre innit....? Estate Agent Rock.....

m8.... i dont care IF lily allen rips off someone else, that aint the point....the point is that the first time i heard the new coldplay effort i recognised it striaght away, i knew which note were being played next... the riff is pretty much identical.

ahhhhh hence the confusion over on the 'dr whos assistant' thread. i agree.

OK the joking is over time to put this thread and nonsense to bed.

Seriously though may I suggest next time you make allegations regarding artists ripping off another you at least go to the trouble of doing something called research to get your facts straight.

Of course you have heard the riff before, as it was used on the BBC David Attenborough Life On Earth TV series. As Coldplay are/were fans of this wonderful broadcasting nature franchise. So they decided to use the motif of Jon Hopkins "Light Through The Veins" instrumental soundscape piece, which (if you had the album) he is properly credited with.

Indeed as he has worked with Brian Eno before, Brian got him involved with the album process & Jon Hopkins is also included on the albums credits with "Colours and additional production".

So if you think they are identical then maybe Jon Hopkins (who has also been utilized on Goldfrapp & Portishead albums) should go after Fairground Attraction for royalties.

As for the Joe Satriani v Coldplay Viva La Vida case, I still find it hilarious that (the Mariah Carey of guitar w*n**ry) Joe Satriani went to litigation for copyright infringement before finding out the Viva La Vida riff was originally recorded on Lou Reed's Street Hassle 1978 album thanks to a string arrangement written by Aram Schefrin (the pseudonym employed by Brian Eno - he was suggested that name by David Bowie during the recording of the Berlin trilogy and used it when booking a place at a favourite Turkish restaurant there), as Brian Eno could not legally be credited for doing work with Arista records at the time.

As hinted in this months Mojo interview with Brian Eno (he appears to have taken (will be taking) counter legal action against Mr Satriani as his original case has now been exposed as a farce), I wonder if Joe Satriani will now make a donation to the superb WarChild charity for ripping Mr Eno off (unwittingly of course ), as Coldplay have already pledged their royalties for using their albums producer's original motif in that song?

So to recap, Coldplay have seemingly done everything legit and above board.

Now you are really taking the p***. Robbie Williams is the biggest cock in pop music.

"I'm quite obviously not the world's most handsome man - I'm the second world's most handsome man!"

"I like listening to good music - and I can't stop playing my album."

"I'm rich beyond my wildest dream..." The day he signed a £75 million contract with EMI the day after EMI closed it's CD factory in Swindon Wiltshire making 1,200 people redundant

If it was not for the fact he has made some rather good records (thanks to the tunesmith efforts of Guy Chambers, Stephen Duffy & err Mark Ronson (maybe on the latter that is why Rudebox did not do so well) and is the most charismatic live performer since Freddie Mercury he would have been a has been ages ago.

No argument from me there but I wont' go any further - I've just never liked him ... can't help it ... love Rock DJ and am coming round to Feel (ooh eh) but can't stand the nob!

Totally off topic (well a bit anyway) was there any truth in someone else's involvement in the writing of Angels? I've read loads of stuff (but have been told its bollocks) that a guy called Ray Heffernan wrote it with Robbie (Robbie wandered into a Dublin band, sobbing his heart out, met up with this bloke and they wrote the song together in his flat). Then Guy Chambers came along and polished it up to the Karaoke classic it is now. Is it total crap? Because I'd also read the guy had allegedly been paid something to give up any claim to it. I read it in The Scotsman a few years back and its still out there on-line so I'm assuming there must be some truth in it.

I only ask you TIP as you were nominated for the most intelligent poster (and I voted for you) so you'll probs know more about this than anyone!

Yes, I remember seeing a BBC3 Liquid News style documentary made just after he'd signed his £80 million record contract. They interviewed the said Ray Hefferman where he played an audio cassette of the demo track they'd written together (for which Ray got paid off for the pricely sum of £7,500). The song featured what became the finished verse. But the (best part of the song IMHO) rousing chorus "And through it allllll, etc" was completely absent. Obviously this was written by the former World Party member, and frontman of The Lemon Trees (whom I saw supporting Crowded House) and bought their excellent only album "Open Book" with all songs penned by Guy Chambers. As I was a fan of World Party & The Lemon Trees I bought Robbie's debut album for the Guy Chambers connection (and still reckon it is a cracking album today) well before Angels came out as a single.

Goes off topic: Still he must be falling on hard times, I mean frequenting the town I work in yesterday....:

PS. Have a read at some of the comments as some are hilarious.

Thanks for that! I know in some of the interviews I've seen / read with Heffernan he does give full credit to Guy Chambers for adding extras, polishing it up, and generally making it into the song people hear today. Heffernan still deserves a credit though! And he did say that the money he got at the time was a hell of a lot for what he considered something 'not all that good'.

I'll go and have a look at those comments now!

Love the comment from someone called LA 'He turned up ... out of the blue' ... bloody lucky there was a photographer and a crowd of 50+ there!

one way or another coldplays works ARE plagarised then!

ps...i never watched 'life on earth', so i have no idea what music was used.... besides, i identified correctly exactly where i had heard that music before....

Just for the record Rich, I'm more insulted by the fact that Coldplay are insufferably dull and have dumbed down the works of far superior bands than I am by whether or not they've taken a riff here or there.... The likes of Public Enemy and scores of Dance/Techno acts such as The Prodigy, KLF and The Orb have used samples, Nirvana borrowed part of a riff from The Killing Joke's "Eighties", Public Enemy sampled Slayer for "She Watch Channel Zero", but the old adage "it's what you do with it that counts" rings true, Coldplay have really done nothing interesting with their "sampling", nor indeed with their influences, whereas the others emphatically did...

I stand by my statements, Coldplay are insufferably dull Estate Agent rock who take interesting, vibrant, colourful music and turn it into something boring and grey..... And THAT is their worst crime for me..... Unfortunatley we can't sue Coldplay for being dull and turgid.....

I would contribute but feel I am a bit skewed as a huge Coldplay fan. I appreciate your opinion though, Scott and of course you are entitled to despise Coldplay as much as you want - even I agree that Chris Martin is an insufefrable twat sometimes, especially when it comes to his pseudo eco warrior tendencies.

As for the plagarism, I wouldn't think that a song is plagarism if a sanctioned sample is used? As for that Joe Satriani case, it is a load of bollocks!

well it isnt really is it, whether its satriani they ripped off or whoever, viva la vida is being passed off as chris martins when in FACT satriani and others have already used the chord progression.

Yeah, Martin could at least acknowledge that he's borrowed.... Cobain and Co pretty much 'fessed up that they borrowed a chord progression from Killing Joke for "Come As You Are", Cobain had already cited Killing Joke as being an influence on the band, and luckily (for Nirvana) KJ took with good grace and humour and saw it as flattering and didn't drag them through the courts..... Guess that makes KJ more "punk rock", cos I'd be willing to bet if they'd similarly borrowed from Sex Pistols, they'd've gotten their arses sued off by Lydon.....

Oh, GOD, dont get me started on that..... It's like, well okay, you're this apparently committed "eco warrior" whatever, so howabout Coldplay actually just put their stuff up on their websites for downloading ONLY and not waste "precious resources" on pressing CDs and having them transported by trucks burning petrol to every single record shop in the country..... Oh, and every Coldplay show should be ACOUSTIC then...... I mean, if Mr Martin is SOOOOOOOO committed to the enviroment and all...... Lead by example Chris.....

That isn't arrogance, it's just a sense of humour.

I can't stand Chris Martin, just because of the way he (+ his band) have presented themselves with their new album and style. "Look at us, we look and sing like gypsies, we're too cool". It's the impression I get anyway,

but one question, The video posted in the first post? Which Coldplay song is it supposed to sound like?

How ironic a post supporting Robbie Williams and criticising Chris Martin.

Extras with Chris Martin

A not so showbiz allegedly secret is that Ricky Gervais wrote this storyline after he did some Charity support with a certain former "Misunderstood" member of a British boyband early in 2005 who was bigger than huge at the time. However this popstar seemed to be more interested in promoting his Greatest Hits album that was out at the time. He apparently turned up to the photo shoot with a T-Shirt of his Greatest Hits album on, which he was asked to remove. This pop star was allegedly not in the most sober of states, and was not the most friendly of persons to Ricky Gervais which did not go unnoticed at the time. Something he clearly maintained to an ITV "Where Are They Now" style documentary on his former band later in the year when the UK press & media turned on him as did the public due to his apparent insincere comments in the documentary regarding his former bandmates......

So this experience gave Ricky Gervais invaluable material, which he used for his second series of Extras.

It is probably of little surprise that the 21st Century answer to Sting, who had also received the sharp end of this pop star so called wit "Rock Music for Accountants", was happy to take on the cameo.

I'm doing anything today to try and distract me from house-work! I've just swept the stairs (a hoover is never good on stairs - you always resort to brush). And there's enough fluff and dust there to stuff a mattress! And thats just a week's worth of fluff and dust! I'm in two minds now about laminating the stairs! Mind you ... that is probably worse ... you can see the fluff then ... at least a carpet can hide it for a while!

I'm rambling!
