10. Human Nature [87 points]

Best score: 11 x1

Worst score: 0 x2

When Madonna was a little girl, she dreamed of whoring around in an ice cube tray dressed as catwoman. All little girls did the same.

There are many different versions of this song: a radio edit which repeats the line 'it's human nature', the video version which bleeps out the s-word and the album version where Madonna rants 'I'm not your bitch. Don't hag your $h!t on me!' Charming.

The song seems to be an answer back to her 'Sex'/'Erotica' critics and some believe it's about Warren Beatty.

It charted the same week as 'Roll With It' and 'Country House', fact fans.

I know the 'GHV2' album is heavily weighted towards the Mirwais/Orbit era, implying this time produced her best work, but you lot really don't seem to like the mid 90s Madonna tracks.

All of the 'Ray Of Light' singles are left to chart, while only 2 tracks from before that album are left.

9. Take A Bow [91 points]

Best score: 11 x1

Worst score: 3 x1

At last! A song gets more than 87 points. Hurrah!

But another mid 90s track bites the dust. Boo!

This Babyface-produced ballad was an enormous hit in America but did very poorly in the UK breaking Madonna's incredible run of top ten hits. She'd had 30-odd in a row then this one stalled at #16.

I like this song but the matador video annoys me slightly: she rubs herself a lot. Sex on the brain, that one.

I think it should have charted higher than #16 on the pop chart but I think its performance in this rate is about right.

8. Drowned World / Substitute For Love [93 points]

Best score: 11 x1

Worst score: 1 x1

The first song from 'Ray Of Light' to fall. I don't like it - it's a bit of a dirge.

The video for this song was controversial (God, I'm getting sick of typing that). Some critics saw parallels between Madonna's escape from the paparazzi and the death of Princess Di the year before. Some believed it was 'too soon' to show blonde women in taxis

Hardly a Black Jesus, is it?

The song sees Madonna reflecting on fame. 'How High' does the same but you can have a little dance to that too. Hence, 'How High' is better.

This single only appealed to the Madonna fanatics as its chart run shows: {10}-27-40-50-66->5

OOOOOH drowned world is gone not a total shock as it doesnt appeal to most people.

7. Music [95 points]

Best score: 9 x1

Worst score: 5 x1

One of Madonna's chart-toppers is only #7. This was a big shock for me.

As you can see from the best/worst scores, no-one hated this song but no-one rated it that much either.

The video featured Ali G a whole year before everyone got sick of him. Madonna also cavorted with strippers who may, or may not, bare their private parts. Something gets blurred out when the video's shown on Kiss anyway.

It's a cool song though I'm not a fan of her Mirwais collaborations at all. Bring back William Orbit, I say. As has been said in other threads, this is quite weak for a lead single. It lacks the pop power of 'Hung Up', the awesome Black Jesusness of 'Like A Prayer' and the 'what? Is this really Madonna?' aceness of 'Frozen'.

That might be why it's only #7.

It is one of Madonna's longest-running singles ever on the UK charts though: {1}-2-5-11-14-13-23-33-36-28-31-29-33-49-50-50-55-56-48-33-36-47-63->23.

Though 23 weeks seems tiny compared to 'Feel Good Inc', remember this was before legal downloads changed the charts. This was 23 weeks of people buying the song at £4 a pop.

6. Don't Tell Me [95 points]

Best score: 10 x2

Worst score: 2 x1

I hate this song. I don't like anything about it. That's about all I can say.

It came out the week Madonna did a tiny little gig in London. The publicity generated by that, and her relationship with 'Guy Itchy' as he was dubbed on Absolutely Fabulous, helped this single zoom up the charts.

There's lots of sand in the video. Thrilling!

Bring back Black Jesus and wedding-dress wanking. I've little time for sand in my videos.

Top 5 tomorrow

Still left:

Three 'Ray Of Light' singles

my favourite song of the 90s

and just 1 song released before Madonna's glorious comeback.

Please leave comments. Are you angry, sad or bemused by the results so far.

Perhaps some predictions for the top 5?

Wow!.

I would have thought Music would be Top 5 atleast but it's not a strong lead single tho that didnt stop it making no.1 in about 23 places.

Don't tell me isn't a great song nor c**p.

Obviously I can't predict but if I were ranking the top 5 by quality I'd do as follows:

1. Beautiful Stranger

2. Frozen

3. Power of Goodbye

4. Ray of Light

5. Deeper and Deeper

WOW! I forgot Deeper and Deeper i LOVE The version she did of this on The Girlie Show Tour!.

I'd say

5,Deeper & Deeper

4,Ray Of Light

3,Beautiful Stranger

2,Frozen

1,Power Of Good Bye.

It's not very well known or (IMO) very good so it's done incredibly well to beat some of Madonna's biggest hits of the last decade.

Yep! Personally I think Human Nature is 10000X better than Deeper and Deeper -_-

Yeah thats true.

Tho Maddy did give the Song a nod at the Re-Invention Tour and it was planned for the current Confessions tour but was replaced.
